General Sternwood hires Philip Marlowe as a private detective to investigate blackmail against his family. Marlowe discovers that Geiger, the blackmailer, has been killed. He finds Carmen Sternwood at Geiger's house and takes her home. Through his investigation, Marlowe determines that Geiger was killed by Owen Taylor, the Sternwood's chauffeur. Marlowe is threatened by several people involved, including Eddi Mars and Joe Brody. After more threats and close calls, Marlowe solves the cases of Geiger and Brody's murders. He discovers that Rusty Regan actually disappeared because Carmen shot him, and Mars was blackmailing Vivian because of this. In the end, Marlowe forces Mars to confess

2. When General Sternwood asked Philip Marlowe for
help. Someone was blackmailing him and he was
really worried. He told him that the he began being
blackmailed by Geiger, when Rusty Regan, Vivian´s
husband, left them without saying why. The
detective told him he was going to help and then he
met his daughters, Carmen and Vivian. He saw that
Carmen was selfish and stupid, and Vivian intelligent
but cruel. But, he realized that they were two selfish
children. After leaving the house, he saw the
Sternwood`s oil wells. Their money came from them.

3. Philip went to Geiger´s store and spoke with a
girl. He asked her to speak with Geiger and
she told him that he wasn´t there. After some
time, he discovered than he lived in Laverne
Terrace and that he sold pornography.

4. The detective went to Geiger´s house, and he saw
that Carmen and Geiger were inside the house. He
realised that Geiger was dead. So, he took Carmen
and Geiger´s notebook. After leaving, he realised
that the carpet was full of blood. After taking
Carmen to her house, he returned to Geiger´s house
and he saw that everything was clean and that he
wasn´t there. He went to sleep and began thinking
about the notebook and who had taken Geiger´s
body.

5. Owen Taylor, Sternwood´s chauffeur, was
dead. That day, he met Vivian and they spoke
about what had happened to Carmen some
days before.
Vivian told the detective that Eddi Mars will
give money to them to help carmen.
After that, Philip had a conversation with
carmen in which they spoke about what had
happened.

6. Eddi Mars appeared and he began threatening him, but
then the detective left that house.
Marlowe went to Joe Brody´s house and there, Brody,
threatened him. He was pointing him with a gun when
Carmen appeared. So, they began fighting because
Philip was accusing him of killing Geiger. After that, he
took the guns of his enemies and Carmen left.

7. A man who worked for Geiger called Carol entered
to the room and killed Joe Brody. Then, the
detective and Carol went to Geiger´s house and he
saw that Geiger´s body was there.
Thalking with Brody, he discovered that Brody had
not killed Geiger

8. After lots of investigations and threatens, Philip
Marlowe discovered that Geiger was killed by Taylor
and that Brody was killed by Carol.
So, he was kidnapped and Harry Jones, Agne`s
accomplice, saved him. Some days later, Harry Jones
was killed by Mar´s mans and Philip could not help
him. After some time, the detective was kidnapped
another time and there he had an important
conversation with Mrs Mars in which she told him
that she did not escape with Regan. And that her
husband is inoccent of Regan`s murder.

9. Philip did not believe what she said. Vivian help him
to escape and she killed Canino who was a man that
worked for Mars. Marlowe went to his home and he
met Carmen who told him that she did not like
Regan because he did not pay attention on her. So,
Marlowe realized that Regan disappeared because
Carmen shot him and that Mars blackmailed Vivian
because of that.

10. Marlowe and Vivian made Mars go to Geiger`s
house and there they forced him to tell his mans to
kill him. Because of that, Mr Mars died. Then, Philip
called Ohls and he told him that Mars killed Regan.
