Technologies that helped the
   Allies win World War 2
New Technologies in World War 2
The ‘joystick’ helped control
     airplanes in battle
The new radar device was used to
detect enemy planes ahead of time
Searchlights were used for the first time to
guide and search for planes at night
New larger machine guns were
developed to fire at airplanes.
The German ‘doodlebug’ missile
   was a long-range weapon
Germany developed the
Panzer-a SUPER heavy tank!
World War II planes were much
 improved over WWI models.
Large ships that carried aircraft
          were used
                     Lots and lots of airplanes!!!!
BIG bomber planes were used to
  drop bombs in enemy targets

          NOTICE THE OPEN HATCH?
This was a ‘fragmentation’ bomb and would
splinter and cause huge damage to enemy
                  troops
New boats would carry men from
    the ships to the shore
These new water and land vehicles
‘tanks’ could travel across both with
                ease!
The Japanese military used poison
gases on the Chinese during World
     War 2! Thousands died!
Because so many were fearful of poison gas from
the first world war, both sides refused to use it
against enemy troops. They knew if they used it, it
would be used back on them.
The world’s first computers
were developed in World War 2.
       They were huge!
Some technologies were not new. Here a
Japanese soldier is about to behead an
Australian prisoner of war with a sword!
The most dangerous technology
in World War 2 was a new
 unbelievable new bomb being
          developed.
The ‘atom’ bomb was being worked on by
scientists on both sides. Whoever got it
perfected first had a huge advantage.
Atom bombs create a HUGE
    amount of energy when they
            explode!
• Atom bombs split the basic unit of matter-
  the atom.
Albert Einstein was a famous scientist from
Germany who happened to be a Jew who
            escaped to the U.S.
Einstein met with Roosevelt and told
him the Germans were working on an
            atom bomb!
The U.S. hurried to get top
    scientists to develop an atom
                 bomb!
The U.S. super SECRET effort to build the
 atom bomb was code-named the
 ‘Manhattan Project’.
They blew the first one up in New Mexico in
 the middle of the desert.
The atom bomb exploding in the desert where no
one lived! It was a success! The United States
now had the world’s most powerful weapon!
The U.S. sent secret messages in
American Navajo Indian language. Why
       this language? (p. 357)
A WOL-LA-CHEE =ANT
A BE-LA-SANA =APPLE
A TSE-NILL=AXE
NE-ZHONI= PRETTY
GLOE-IH =WEASEL

The Navajo Indian code talkers helped America win the war!
