Welcome to the training module on Introducing the LTM4611 – Ultralow Input Voltage µModule Regulator
This training module will introduce the LTM4611, an efficient 15A single supply ultra-low input voltage step-down µModule ® regulator.
By including the controllers, power MOSFETs, inductors, input and output bypass capacitors and compensation circuitry, the LTM product family simplifies power supply design for system engineers. The LTM4611 step-down regulator in particular delivers up to 15A from a single supply rail of as little as 1.5V and may be paralleled to support even higher output current demands. An external clock input supports a uniform switching frequency within the system for noise isolation and/or multiphase operation to reduce the amount of input capacitance required. With an internal differential remote sense amplifier, the LTM4611 delivers excellent voltage regulation at the load.
The LTM4611 operates from a single input supply from 1.5 to 5.5 volts to deliver an output voltage between 0.8 to 5.0 volts with 2% accuracy over the full operating input, output and temperature range. It also offers a user selectable burst mode or pulse skip mode operation to deliver 83% efficiency at light loads. Additional features include adjustable soft start, power good, overcurrent protection and output tracking / sequencing in multiple supply rail systems. Packaged in a compact 15 x 15 x 4.3mm high LGA, the LTM4611 is compatible with surface mount reflow techniques and is RoHS compliant.
LGA packages are thermally efficient, highly reliable enclosures for the micromodule regulator family. This table shows the latest datapoints from ongoing reliability tests. The complete report is available for download from the LTM4611 product webpage.
LTM4611 is easily paralleled to help spread thermal losses over a wider PCB area and can also be beneficial to reduce end product costs. This can become a useful strategy for customers seeking to segment their boards or systems into different price / performance tiers. An optional external clock may be used to eliminate any beat frequencies between the two devices and implement multi-phase switching to reduce the amount of input capacitance required for proper operation.
To assist with the design process, Linear Technology provides LTSpice, a free circuit simulation tool with pre-built models of Linear Technology products and standard discrete components. LTspice is available for download at www.linear.com/ltspice.
The LTM4611 is the first DC/DC step-down module product with the ability to operate from a single rail as low as 1.5V and does so with up to 89% efficiency. This 15A output micromodule requires just 4 external components and is backed by Linear Technology’s reputation for impressive design support, performance, quality, and reliability.
