Dolby Developer Portal: Creating a Rich Online Experience for Developers Dolby Laboratories is the global leader in technologies that are essential elements in the best entertainment experiences. Founded in 1965 and best known for high-quality audio and surround sound in environments from the cinema to the living room to mobile devices, Dolby® creates innovations that enrich entertainment at the movies, at home, or on the go. Built on the Ektron content management system (CMS), developer.dolby.com is a new initiative for Dolby to engage with third-party developers around the world. “Dolby has a relationship with Ektron stretching back a number of years, and Ektron is the preferred CMS solution for Dolby corporate,” says Simon Walker, Head of Developer Programs for Dolby. “Because we were a brand-new site in the Dolby ecosystem, we decided to go with what was then the latest release of Ektron which had a number of features that we really wanted.” The goal of the Dolby Developer Portal is to help application developers find information, delve into Dolby technologies, and engage with Dolby Labs as they build apps for desktop, tablets, and smartphones. As Dolby creates marketing campaigns and events, developers will use the portal to engage with those activities and tie into what they themselves are doing with Dolby technologies in their products, services, and apps. “Responsive Design Was Fundamental to the Project” As a company with a rich history in entertainment experiences, it was important to Dolby that its developer portal have a distinctive creative element. “We want developers to have a unique experience when they come to the website,” says Walker. “Responsive design was fundamental to the project. Many of our developers are focused on delivery to mobile devices, so in order to establish credibility and maintain a level of engagement, we wanted the site to render with a responsive design for mobile devices, which I think it does very well.” Responsive design is an approach for building one site (rather than specific desktop and mobile versions) that adapts to smartphones and tablets based on device profiles and screen sizes. As the Dolby Developer Portal demonstrates, the strategy includes simplifying navigation, making that navigation touch-friendly, making search a key component of the visitor experience, and streamlining content for mobile. Walker goes on to note that, from concept to production, the site took only seven weeks to deploy, involving both a web design firm for the creative design, an implementation team for coding the CMS, and overall oversight by Dolby. “In terms of what we’ve delivered in that time, this platform has been extraordinary,” says Walker. “Since we’ve been up and running, the ease of use has been fantastic from an administration and a content management perspective.”
