Why TReC?
TReC -The Responsive City is an international network for researching and designing cities. We see cities as self-organizing systems. Cities are always subject to processes where simple realities end up in complex urban situations regardless of specific political and socio-economic conditions. Shrinking cities of Eastern Germany, growing informal settlements as in Accra or Buenos Aires, mushrooming gated communities at the peripheries of Istanbul are all subjects of systems theory.
In the last five years, we have been developing a special eye for analyzing such open and complex urban systems. TReC not only analyzes but also proposes strategies and tactics to deal with such urban processes.
TReC is a spin-off company of TU Delft and INTI [International Newtowns Institute]. The founder Ekim Tan is a PHD candidate of TU Delft in urbanism department. In her research she applies principles of self-organization theories into the practice of urban planning and design. Professionals of planning, architecture and game design form the TReC network who live in Amsterdam, Cairo, Istanbul, London, Rotterdam and Thessaloniki.
Currently TReC is forming the PLAY the CITY foundation to research and apply simulation games in the planning and design of cities. PLAY the CITY utilizes new media as a complementary tool to introduce new forms of urban planning and design.
In the near future we will be developing games for different world cases from Shenzen, Detroit, Istanbul, Sao Paolo and Randstad.
