On the future directions: Maybe some kind of a research project on how the portfolio process and writing reflections helps students become more confidant about their new profession? Another future direction would be to add a peer feedback process to our existing process. Perhaps require students to work in small groups to provide feedback on portfolios during 2-3 points during the semester.
