THE BEHAVIOR OF LIGHT IN A TRANSPARENT OBJECT
Overview:
As light strikes different objects, it behaves differently. It may be
absorbed by objects that are opaque such as wood and dark cloth thus, not
allowing light to pass through them.
This learning material provides the learners information that much
light can pass through other objects. These are called transparent objects.
The activities are easy to perform and by doing them, they will acquire
knowledge of the concepts and apply them in their daily lives.
Likewise, the learners can determine the importance of saving
electricity through the use of transparent objects and be grateful for the
natural light given by God.
I. Objectives
a. Tell that light passes through transparent materials
b. Perform the activities with care
c. Appreciate the natural light given by God
II. Subject Matter
Topic : Behavior of Light in Transparent Materials
Science concept: Light passes through transparent materials.

PELC V. 4.4.2
Materials : a blade of clear glass jalousie
plastic cover
clear water
500 ml clear plastic bottle
uncovered book
empty glass
Duration : 40 minutes
III. Procedure
A. Motivation
Light does not pass through opaque materials. What about in
transparent materials? Can light pass through them?
B. Activity
a. Pre Lab Discussion
1. Grouping
2. Distribution of Activity Sheets and materials
b. Activities (See separate sheet)
Teaching Hints:
• The teacher may conduct the activities beforehand to avoid
confusion and misconceptions from the learners.
• The pupils should be reminded of the precautionary measures
when handling fragile materials during the conduct of activities.
DIFFERENT ACTIVITIES
Activity 1
Place the plastic sheet on top of your book.
Questions: Can you still read the words on the book? What made you
read the words?
Activity 2
Go outside and place the clear glass jalousie blade against the
sunlight carefully.
Questions: Does light pass through the jalousie blade? Why?
Activity 3
Pour water into a clear plastic bottle until half full.
Question: Can you see the water in it?
Activity 4
Get an empty clear drinking glass. Place it in front of an object.
Question: Can you see the object behind the glass?
C. Analysis
Teaching Hint:
• The teacher should accept different answers from the learners
for every question raised.
1. In activity 1, what made you read the printed words on the book?
Do you think you can still read them when you’re in the dark?
Why?
2. In activity 2, was there much light that passed through the glass
blade jalousie? Did you observe any shadow even the glass blade
jalousie block the light? Why?
3. In activity 3, what kind of bottle was used that made you see the
water in it? Was the light able to pass through the bottle?
4. In activity 4, what made you see the object behind the glass?
5. Based on the activities done, what materials allow light to pass
through easily?
D. Abstraction
How does light behave as it strikes transparent materials?
E. Application
A glass window of your living room is covered with thick
curtains. It is daytime but still you want to switch on the electric lights
to give more light to the room. Aside from switching on the electric
lights, what else can you do to lighten the room?
By doing so, what were you able to save?
IV. Assessment
Put a check mark (/) on the blank if the material allows light to
pass through and mark X if it does not.
____1. Water ____4. Clear water
____2. Wood ____5. Towel
____3. Plastic cover
Answer key:
1. √ 4. √
2. X 5. X
3. √
V. Assignment
List down 5 transparent materials found in your home.
VI. Resource Lists
1. Activity sheets
2. Teacher Manual pages 62 – 63
3. Science.jrank.org/pages/1593/Color-transparent-translucent-opaque.

EXPECTED ANSWERS
Group Activities
Activity 1
1. Yes, I can still read the printed words on the book.
It is because the plastic sheet is very clear.
Activity 2
1. Yes, the light passes through the clear glass blade jalousie.
It passes through because the glass blade jalousie is clear.
Activity 3
1. Yes, I can see the water in it.
Activity 4
1. Yes, I can see the object behind the glass.
Analysis
1. The light made me read the printed words on the book.
I can not read the printed words if I am in the dark because
there’s no light.
2. Yes, there was much light that passed through the glass
jalousie blade. I didn’t observe any shadow even the glass
jalousie blade blocked the light because the glass blade is
very clear or transparent.
3. Clear bottle was used thus making me see the water in it.
The light was able to pass the bottle.
4. The light made me see the objects behind the glass.
5. Transparent materials allow light to pass through easily.
Abstraction
Light can pass through easily in transparent objects.
Application
To brighten the room I will move aside the thick curtains and
allow the sunlight enter or pass through the clear glass. By doing so, I can
save electricity.
