academic year 2009 / 10
Welcome
Welcome to the first college of chiropractic in the Mediterranean
region.
The Barcelona College of Chiropractic will open its doors in October
2009 to all those interested in embarking on a career in chiropractic.
The enthusiasm for the BCC in the broader health care community
is reflected in the speed with which the necessary funds have been
raised and by the willingness of two of Spain’s premier public uni-
versities, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Universitat de Girona, to
formally collaborate with the BCC.
A team of world-class teachers will deliver the 5-year long full-time
curriculum. Throughout the programme of study students will de-
velop their clinical skills, first by observation and with time by actu-
ally providing care in the BCC Chiropractic Centre. The two official
languages of the school are Spanish and English. The programme of
study is structured, with the help of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra’s
language department, so that by the time students graduate from the
BCC they will be proficient in both languages.
Thank you for your interest in a career in chiropractic and for consid-
ering the BCC in your future. Given the enormous pressure that the
traditional health care system is under and the position of chiroprac-
tic as a leader in the pursuit of natural health and well-being, there
has never been a better time to become a chiropractor and serve
your community.
Adrian Wenban, B.Sc., B.App.Sc., M.Med.Sc., MACC.
Director, Barcelona College of Chiropractic
The Barcelona
College of
Chiropractic
Mission
The Barcelona College of Chiropractic is the first chiropractic college
in the Mediterranean region. In large part its development has been a
response to the need, expressed by the public and other health care
providers, for more well trained chiropractors in this region.
Barcelonaoffersmuchinthewayofhealthyliving:goodweather,healthy
outdoor lifestyle, beautiful beaches, Mediterranean diet and world class
sporting facilities (The 1992 Summer Olympic Games, officially known
as the Games of the XXV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport
event celebrated in Barcelona, Spain). As a result, Barcelona provides
the perfect location for pursuing a career in chiropractic.
The BCC aims to provide its students with the attitudes, knowledge,
skills and those clinical caring and reasoning abilities needed in order
to become a chiropractic health care provider capable of practicing in-
dependently or in a collaborative setting. Additionally, via its teaching,
learning and assessment strategy the BCC aims to support students in
the development of both their own individualised approach to chiroprac-
tic and their life long learning skills.
Institutional Support
Spanish Chiropractic Association (Asociación Española de
Quiropráctica, AEQ)
The AEQ is the national association representing chiropractors in
Spain. The AEQ was founded in 1986 and legalised the same year by
the Ministry of the Interior with the approval of the Ministry of Health.
It is a member of the European Chiropractors’ Union (ECU) and the
World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC).
In October of 2007 the members of the AEQ voted in the affirmative to
support the further development of the Barcelona College of Chiro-
practic. Moreover, on the 29th of May 2009, representatives from the
AEQ and the Fundació Privada Quiropràctica signed a collaborative
agreement wherein it was agreed that the two entities would work
together toward the further development of the BCC.
Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF)
The Barcelona College of Chiropractic has signed a collaborative
agreement with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), one of the
most prestigious public universities in Spain. The UPF has gained
international prestige in terms of both research and teaching.
As part of this agreement, the BCC will deliver the majority of its
classes on the UPF’s campus (idEC building located on Calle Balm-
es). Additionally BCC students will attend the language programme,
offered by the Programa d’Ensenyament de Idiomes (PEI or Pro-
gramme of Teaching of Languages), which will be given on the UPF’s
Ciutadella campus. The agreement also opens the way towards the
UPF being involved in the further development of the BCC’s final year
of study.
Established in 1993, idEC is the UPF’s institute of continuing edu-
cation. It aims to develop continuing education and training pro-
grammes for professionals in close collaboration with the world of
business. With its strong focus on quality and academic excellence
idEC has now consolidated a prestigious reputation by offering mas-
ters and postgraduate programmes that are well adapted to the edu-
cational needs of the business and professional worlds.
Universitat de Girona
The agreement with the Universitat de Girona (UdG) takes the form
of a collaborative agreement related to the BCC’s use of the ana-
tomical dissection rooms and other specialised laboratories. Ad-
ditionally, practical classes for the BCC’s science subjects will be
delivered with the assistance of appropriately trained UdG teaching
staff. A second collaborative agreement with the UdG provides for
BCC students and staff to have access to the UdG’s on-campus and
on-line library facilities.
Educational Resources
The curriculum of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic will be de-
livered using the following educational resources:
• idEC
Lectures and seminars in both the basic and clinical sciences will
be taught in the IdEC building in Calle Balmes. In addition, BCC
students may use the cafe and other idEC facilities.
• UdG
Practical classes related to basic science subjects will be deli-
vered in the dissection rooms and other specialised laboratories
located in the UdG’s Faculty of Medicine. Students will also have
access to the UdG’s on-campus and on-line library facilities.
4 5
• BCC Chiropractic Centre
At the BCC Chiropractic Centre students will, during their early
years, observe experienced chiropractors caring for their pa-
tients. During the later years of study students will provide the
care themselves under the close supervision of appropriately tra-
ined BCC staff.
Accreditation
In the USA and some European countries, chiropractic is a govern-
ment regulated primary contact health care profession that forms
part of private and public health care systems. In Spain, legislation
related to chiropractic has not yet been developed and therefore the
practice of chiropractic is still not specifically regulated.
No official registration board or governmental accrediting agency,
related to the education and training of chiropractors, presently ex-
ists in Spain. The Barcelona College of Chiropractic plans to seek
candidate status with the European Council of Chiropractic Educa-
tion (ECCE) before the end of 2009.
The ECCE is the European council that gives formal accreditation to
chiropractic education in Europe. Currently, only four chiropractic
educational institutions have achieved this accredited status in Eu-
rope. The earliest that ECCE accreditation would be awarded to the
BCC is when its first class of students graduates.
Studies The BCC Curriculum
The Barcelona College of Chiropractic has developed a 5-year
full-time curriculum to educate and train competent chiroprac-
tors able to meet the challenges of practicing independently or in
collaboration with other health care providers.
With the assistance of curriculum development experts, and with
feedback from major stakeholders, the BCC has developed its own
unique curriculum that strives to marry the discipline of chiropractic
with advanced teaching, learning and assessment strategies.
Science, Art and Philosophy
Traditionally, chiropractic was seen to be based on three pillars: Sci-
ence, Art and Philosophy. The commitment to find a balance between
these three pillars in the content of the curriculum is one aspect of what
makes the training and education offered by the Barcelona College of
Chiropractic unique.
Consistent with chiropractic principles and theory, the BCC team has
worked to develop a curriculum that combines the study of basic and
clinical sciences with a deep reflection on the body’s innate ability to
optimise its own health potential.
Bilingual School
The Barcelona College of Chiropractic is an international college in
that it has two official languages - Spanish and English. As a result,
whether students are native English or Spanish speakers when they
first start studying at the college, they will be linguistically supported
in becoming proficient in the other language before their period of
study at the BCC is completed.
Philosophy
—Why?—
ART
—How?—
Science
—What?—
6 7
During the first year, the school will offer supportive language courses
to students in order to ensure their adaptation to the bilingual cur-
riculum. Additionally, during this first year, lectures will be translated
simultaneously into English and Spanish to enable all students to fol-
low classes easily while improving their language level.
Being fluent in both languages will be important for the last two
years of the curriculum because all theory classes will be taught
in English whilst all practical experience in the BCC’s Chiropractic
Centre will take place in Spanish.
Research
The curriculum of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic aims to
enable students to acquire, in addition to knowledge, attitudes and
skills relevant to Chiropractic, understanding and practice of the sci-
entific method, other methods of investigation and evidence-based
practice, including critical and analytical thinking.
Therefore, it is of utmost importance that research ability is devel-
oped from the beginning of the curriculum and not relegated to the
later years, during which students face a greater overall workload.
With this in mind, the curriculum has been structured so as to en-
sure that the teaching of research related skills is incorporated into
the teaching and assessment of all modules.
Moreover, the curriculum of the BCC includes the module “Re-
search I: Research Protocol Design” (5 ECTS), designed for stu-
dents to move from an overview on a research topic to a well-de-
veloped protocol that provides consideration of theory, ethics and
other related issues. Once students have familiarised themselves
with research protocol design, the module titled, “Research II: In-
vestigation Methods and Project” (15 ECTS) will provide students
(individually or in a group) with the skills and opportunity to con-
duct a research project of their own design.
Personal Development Planning and Reflective Practice
The curriculum of the BCC supports the personal development of
students as they prepare for a career as a practicing chiropractor.
Personal Development Planning (PDP) aims to enhance the stu-
dents’ ability to understand what and how they are learning and to
help the learner review, plan and take responsibility for their own
learning. Through the use of PDP it is expected that students will
learn to get the most out of their student experience whilst learn-
ing to take responsibility for their clinical and academic development
and becoming more aware of the many opportunities provided by
such development.
During the first two years, the modules Personal Development Plan-
ning and Reflective Practice I and II aim to help students start to
approach their learning in a reflective way. It is expected that in this
way, they will discover that learning is always linked to action and
theory to practice. It will also prepare students to think about the
best conditions for their learning.
In their future career, reflection must become a part of their daily rou-
tine and must therefore take on a more or less instinctive character.
Developing these skills will be useful not only while they are studying
to become a chiropractor, but in the years ahead when practicing as
a qualified chiropractor. Through the acquisition of reflective skills
and life long learning, they can develop a kind of intuitive radar tuned
to making the most out of useful learning opportunities.
Clinical Experience
Contact with patients is essential from the beginning of the course
and thus, the Barcelona College of Chiropractic offers its students
the opportunity to observe and interact with experienced chiropractic
professionals caring for patients in the BCC Chiropractic Centre.
Throughout much of the 4th and 5th years, after having received ex-
tensive training in all aspects of patient care and having passed a
clinic entrance examination, students provide chiropractic care to
patients whilst under close supervision.

BCC borchure

  • 2. Welcome Welcome to the first college of chiropractic in the Mediterranean region. The Barcelona College of Chiropractic will open its doors in October 2009 to all those interested in embarking on a career in chiropractic. The enthusiasm for the BCC in the broader health care community is reflected in the speed with which the necessary funds have been raised and by the willingness of two of Spain’s premier public uni- versities, the Universitat Pompeu Fabra and Universitat de Girona, to formally collaborate with the BCC. A team of world-class teachers will deliver the 5-year long full-time curriculum. Throughout the programme of study students will de- velop their clinical skills, first by observation and with time by actu- ally providing care in the BCC Chiropractic Centre. The two official languages of the school are Spanish and English. The programme of study is structured, with the help of the Universitat Pompeu Fabra’s language department, so that by the time students graduate from the BCC they will be proficient in both languages. Thank you for your interest in a career in chiropractic and for consid- ering the BCC in your future. Given the enormous pressure that the traditional health care system is under and the position of chiroprac- tic as a leader in the pursuit of natural health and well-being, there has never been a better time to become a chiropractor and serve your community. Adrian Wenban, B.Sc., B.App.Sc., M.Med.Sc., MACC. Director, Barcelona College of Chiropractic
  • 3. The Barcelona College of Chiropractic Mission The Barcelona College of Chiropractic is the first chiropractic college in the Mediterranean region. In large part its development has been a response to the need, expressed by the public and other health care providers, for more well trained chiropractors in this region. Barcelonaoffersmuchinthewayofhealthyliving:goodweather, healthy outdoor lifestyle, beautiful beaches, Mediterranean diet and world class sporting facilities (The 1992 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXV Olympiad, were an international multi-sport event celebrated in Barcelona, Spain). As a result, Barcelona provides the perfect location for pursuing a career in chiropractic. The BCC aims to provide its students with the attitudes, knowledge, skills and those clinical caring and reasoning abilities needed in order to become a chiropractic health care provider capable of practicing in- dependently or in a collaborative setting. Additionally, via its teaching, learning and assessment strategy the BCC aims to support students in the development of both their own individualised approach to chiroprac- tic and their life long learning skills. Institutional Support Spanish Chiropractic Association (Asociación Española de Quiropráctica, AEQ) The AEQ is the national association representing chiropractors in Spain. The AEQ was founded in 1986 and legalised the same year by the Ministry of the Interior with the approval of the Ministry of Health. It is a member of the European Chiropractors’ Union (ECU) and the World Federation of Chiropractic (WFC). In October of 2007 the members of the AEQ voted in the affirmative to support the further development of the Barcelona College of Chiro- practic. Moreover, on the 29th of May 2009, representatives from the AEQ and the Fundació Privada Quiropràctica signed a collaborative agreement wherein it was agreed that the two entities would work together toward the further development of the BCC. Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) The Barcelona College of Chiropractic has signed a collaborative agreement with the Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), one of the most prestigious public universities in Spain. The UPF has gained international prestige in terms of both research and teaching. As part of this agreement, the BCC will deliver the majority of its classes on the UPF’s campus (idEC building located on Calle Balm- es). Additionally BCC students will attend the language programme, offered by the Programa d’Ensenyament de Idiomes (PEI or Pro- gramme of Teaching of Languages), which will be given on the UPF’s Ciutadella campus. The agreement also opens the way towards the UPF being involved in the further development of the BCC’s final year of study. Established in 1993, idEC is the UPF’s institute of continuing edu- cation. It aims to develop continuing education and training pro- grammes for professionals in close collaboration with the world of business. With its strong focus on quality and academic excellence idEC has now consolidated a prestigious reputation by offering mas- ters and postgraduate programmes that are well adapted to the edu- cational needs of the business and professional worlds. Universitat de Girona The agreement with the Universitat de Girona (UdG) takes the form of a collaborative agreement related to the BCC’s use of the ana- tomical dissection rooms and other specialised laboratories. Ad- ditionally, practical classes for the BCC’s science subjects will be delivered with the assistance of appropriately trained UdG teaching staff. A second collaborative agreement with the UdG provides for BCC students and staff to have access to the UdG’s on-campus and on-line library facilities. Educational Resources The curriculum of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic will be de- livered using the following educational resources: • idEC Lectures and seminars in both the basic and clinical sciences will be taught in the IdEC building in Calle Balmes. In addition, BCC students may use the cafe and other idEC facilities. • UdG Practical classes related to basic science subjects will be deli- vered in the dissection rooms and other specialised laboratories located in the UdG’s Faculty of Medicine. Students will also have access to the UdG’s on-campus and on-line library facilities. 4 5
  • 4. • BCC Chiropractic Centre At the BCC Chiropractic Centre students will, during their early years, observe experienced chiropractors caring for their pa- tients. During the later years of study students will provide the care themselves under the close supervision of appropriately tra- ined BCC staff. Accreditation In the USA and some European countries, chiropractic is a govern- ment regulated primary contact health care profession that forms part of private and public health care systems. In Spain, legislation related to chiropractic has not yet been developed and therefore the practice of chiropractic is still not specifically regulated. No official registration board or governmental accrediting agency, related to the education and training of chiropractors, presently ex- ists in Spain. The Barcelona College of Chiropractic plans to seek candidate status with the European Council of Chiropractic Educa- tion (ECCE) before the end of 2009. The ECCE is the European council that gives formal accreditation to chiropractic education in Europe. Currently, only four chiropractic educational institutions have achieved this accredited status in Eu- rope. The earliest that ECCE accreditation would be awarded to the BCC is when its first class of students graduates. Studies The BCC Curriculum The Barcelona College of Chiropractic has developed a 5-year full-time curriculum to educate and train competent chiroprac- tors able to meet the challenges of practicing independently or in collaboration with other health care providers. With the assistance of curriculum development experts, and with feedback from major stakeholders, the BCC has developed its own unique curriculum that strives to marry the discipline of chiropractic with advanced teaching, learning and assessment strategies. Science, Art and Philosophy Traditionally, chiropractic was seen to be based on three pillars: Sci- ence, Art and Philosophy. The commitment to find a balance between these three pillars in the content of the curriculum is one aspect of what makes the training and education offered by the Barcelona College of Chiropractic unique. Consistent with chiropractic principles and theory, the BCC team has worked to develop a curriculum that combines the study of basic and clinical sciences with a deep reflection on the body’s innate ability to optimise its own health potential. Bilingual School The Barcelona College of Chiropractic is an international college in that it has two official languages - Spanish and English. As a result, whether students are native English or Spanish speakers when they first start studying at the college, they will be linguistically supported in becoming proficient in the other language before their period of study at the BCC is completed. Philosophy —Why?— ART —How?— Science —What?— 6 7
  • 5. During the first year, the school will offer supportive language courses to students in order to ensure their adaptation to the bilingual cur- riculum. Additionally, during this first year, lectures will be translated simultaneously into English and Spanish to enable all students to fol- low classes easily while improving their language level. Being fluent in both languages will be important for the last two years of the curriculum because all theory classes will be taught in English whilst all practical experience in the BCC’s Chiropractic Centre will take place in Spanish. Research The curriculum of the Barcelona College of Chiropractic aims to enable students to acquire, in addition to knowledge, attitudes and skills relevant to Chiropractic, understanding and practice of the sci- entific method, other methods of investigation and evidence-based practice, including critical and analytical thinking. Therefore, it is of utmost importance that research ability is devel- oped from the beginning of the curriculum and not relegated to the later years, during which students face a greater overall workload. With this in mind, the curriculum has been structured so as to en- sure that the teaching of research related skills is incorporated into the teaching and assessment of all modules. Moreover, the curriculum of the BCC includes the module “Re- search I: Research Protocol Design” (5 ECTS), designed for stu- dents to move from an overview on a research topic to a well-de- veloped protocol that provides consideration of theory, ethics and other related issues. Once students have familiarised themselves with research protocol design, the module titled, “Research II: In- vestigation Methods and Project” (15 ECTS) will provide students (individually or in a group) with the skills and opportunity to con- duct a research project of their own design. Personal Development Planning and Reflective Practice The curriculum of the BCC supports the personal development of students as they prepare for a career as a practicing chiropractor. Personal Development Planning (PDP) aims to enhance the stu- dents’ ability to understand what and how they are learning and to help the learner review, plan and take responsibility for their own learning. Through the use of PDP it is expected that students will learn to get the most out of their student experience whilst learn- ing to take responsibility for their clinical and academic development and becoming more aware of the many opportunities provided by such development. During the first two years, the modules Personal Development Plan- ning and Reflective Practice I and II aim to help students start to approach their learning in a reflective way. It is expected that in this way, they will discover that learning is always linked to action and theory to practice. It will also prepare students to think about the best conditions for their learning. In their future career, reflection must become a part of their daily rou- tine and must therefore take on a more or less instinctive character. Developing these skills will be useful not only while they are studying to become a chiropractor, but in the years ahead when practicing as a qualified chiropractor. Through the acquisition of reflective skills and life long learning, they can develop a kind of intuitive radar tuned to making the most out of useful learning opportunities. Clinical Experience Contact with patients is essential from the beginning of the course and thus, the Barcelona College of Chiropractic offers its students the opportunity to observe and interact with experienced chiropractic professionals caring for patients in the BCC Chiropractic Centre. Throughout much of the 4th and 5th years, after having received ex- tensive training in all aspects of patient care and having passed a clinic entrance examination, students provide chiropractic care to patients whilst under close supervision. 8 9
