These are the accompanying slides of a talk in which Jeff Carreira explored the historical and cultural conditions that have influenced our country's preference for the pragmatic over the intellectual. He also illuminated how American culture's greatest original thinkers and philosophers, such as Ralph Waldo Emerson, William James, Charles Sanders Peirce and John Dewey emerged as part of that particular context. Carreira then took things one step further to show how two recent original and revolutionary philosophies, Integral Theory and Evolutionary Enlightenment, can be seen as contemporary continuations of American philosophical thought.
