The purpose of this course is to give health care providers information
about work place violence and how it can be prevented.
The purpose of this course is to also learn about costs, participating
factors, issues and interventions.

Define horizontal violence
Describe four types of workplace violence.
Understand risk factors for workplace violence in health care.
Describe security hazards in health care.
Describe security risks involved with behavior.
List three preventative measures to help reduce workplace violence.

8. Horizontal Violence
Horizontal Violence is defined as nurse on nurse violence.
Examples:
Verbal Threats
Attempts to cause physical harm
Disorderly conduct
Verbal harassment
Making false statements
9. Coworker Violence
This is the worst form of workplace violence, it accounts for 10% of
homicides in the United States.
Violence can occur between a manager and employee or an
administrator and manager and employee on employee.
Horizontal violence can be described as hostile or aggressive behavior
by an individual or group on another person or group (APNA, 2008).
10. Behaviors
These are all the behaviors cited as violence by a coworker by the Hawaii
Nurses Association (2008):
Aggressive body language
Belittling gestures
Withholding needed information
Bickering
Scapegoating
Gossiping
Humiliation
Shouting or yelling

Encourage class to make a 1 – 3 minute video on horizontal violence
and upload it on YouTube.

According to the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) “horizontal violence is an act of violence directed toward a person at work or on duty.” (Occupational Safety and Health Administration, 2008). Horizontal violence is any threat of a nurse directing threats towards each other or themselves and those less powerful than them. Horizontal violence is any attempt to cause physical harm such as striking or pushing an individual. Disorderly conduct involves shouting or throwing objects or even slamming doors. Verbal harassment is abusive language or gestures towards fellow nurses. Making false statements against coworkers.
