  1. Show Cyberbullying-Talent Show video from youTube to set the stage of presentation.
  2. Introduce yourself, say where you’re from. Introduce the concept of Zoey’s Room, but emphasize that girls aren’t the only ones who get cyberbullied. This workshop is filled with info to help boys and girls protect their reputations on the Internet.
  3. In order to understand the complexities of cyberbullying, let me first start by sharing some stats with you that exemplifies today’s average American’s internet usage. What use to happen on the school playground is now magnified by the amount of kids in the sandbox.
  4. With more teens using the Internet than ever before, teaching kids how to protect their private information online is absolutely necessary. On a broad scale, data on MySpace (where millions of teens and tweens have profiles) reveal there are thousands of known sex offenders confirmed as MySpace members. On a micro scale, even a kid’s best friend can use his info and photos against him electronically.
  5. Review personal info criteria. After you go over it, ask the audience: “Why do you think we emphasize this over and over?” We’ll tell you why…
  6. Let’s talk about today’s Internet Culture. Quick question: how many of you use AIM or chat rooms? Raise hands? 74 percent of online teens use Instant Messaging. Here’s a popular social networking site a lot of you use-America Online’s aim instant messaging. Now take a look at what they have here for a poll. These are adults who work for aim who created this poll. Seems kind of fun—ways to get back an an ex—then you get to suggestions they give you, like sharing naughty photos and spreading lice rumors.
  7. You’ll notice almost have the teens surveyed said that they use IM to gossip and spread rumors. And here America Online is actually encouraging kids to think and behave like cyberbullies by suggesting using technology as revenge. STOP—before next slide—Ask audience to pull out a pen and a piece of paper I’m going to start off with a couple of stories and photos about the boy and girl who didn’t want to be famous. Speaking of photos, did you know that 79 percent of teens include photos of themselves on their social networking profiles? (Pew study) Even though you think that’s safe, that only your friends will see what you put up there, by the end of this workshop, you might change your mind about that. Show Allison Stokke Interview video
  8. What do you think is wrong with this next picture? Allison Stokke is 18 years old, one of the top pole vaulters in America. What happened here was a blogger saw her at one of her track meets, snapped a picture of her without her permission and put it up on his blog with the comment: “hubba hubba.” Seems pretty innocent except, after that, this picture flew around websites all over the world and in less than a month produced over 180,000 hits on Yahoo with some nasty comments about her published. Show a couple of websites that pull up when you type in Allison Stokke Show the other Allison videos on YouTube This was a total invasion of her privacy and now her father has to monitor message boards for stalkers and predators who’ve made threats. All because she walked out of the house one day to go to her track meet. This is a warning to you all that people can use cell phone pictures of you to embarrass you—so don’t let your friends post any pics of you that can later come back to haunt you. Perry Aftab, Executive Director of WiredSafety.org stated that the group at highest risk online are: 11 1/2 - 15 year-old kids. 70% of the victims online are girls 30% are boys.
  9. In many ways Cyberbullying is much more dangerous and hurtful than traditional face to face bullying, because it is anonymous (most times you don’t know who is doing it and that makes you feel as if everybody must feel this way) and it is not just between a couple of kids—over 6 million people can now see things about you. Show video of Star Wars Kid How many of you have seen the video of the Star Wars kid—this poor overweight 15-year-old kid made a videotape of himself using a light sabre filmed himself fighting invisible enemies. If any of your friends has a video camera, you know you’ve gotten together with friends and have done the same silly things. Well another kid at his school got a hold of this tape, digitized it and put it up on the net. Within weeks 15 million people downloaded, viewed this video and remixed it into parody after parody. Show other videos remixing Star Wars Kid This kid was so taunted and abused by his classmates over it, his parents had to put him in a mental hospital. In the end, his parents sued the parents of the kids who put the video up on the net. Guess what the Star Wars kid has coming to him in damages: $351,000 . ----STOP I want you to look at this next slide for a moment—then, without saying anything, express your opinion as if you are writing to your friends on IM. This is anonymous—you don’t have to put your name on this paper. I want you to feel free to say whatever comes to mind—here we go. You don’t have to turn these in.
  10. Britney Spears—now give them a few minutes to “write a message”
  11. Actual things girls have said to these pictures online:
  12. Go over definition of Cyberbullying
  13. Who is cyberbullied? Anyone.
  14. Now I know we were just joking about Britney Spears, and she has definitely made mistakes, but I’m using her image for a reason. If she were sitting right here and told you how out of control she feels, how viciously gossiped about she feels to the point where she has cried desperately—could any of you relate? Look down at your comments. I had you write those things because what we all lack when we write things on the Internet is empathy. Empathy is the ability to identify with and understand another person’s feelings or difficulties It is proven that online we don’t write things or act the way we might in real life for two reasons: 1.Britney can’t see you face to face. That makes teens like you feel you are invisible, because you are anonymous behind a screenname, you can “get away” with saying mean things about anyone you want, because nobody knows it is you= hence no consequences 2.You can’t see Britney; teens don’t know how bad she might be feeling and because they don’t know her, and can’t see or recognize how their words might have hurt her, there is little empathy.
  15. Question: How many of you have ever found out you were talked about behind your back either on a chat room or anywhere else? Let’s go over what the types of cyberbullies are. キInadvertent bullies are people just messing around on the web with no real malice—like say the kid who put the Star Wars kid video up on the net just for fun. They’re also called bystanders and you know who that is: those are all the kids who lurk in the shadows of the IM world and wait for some drama to happen so they can eagerly join in or watch it for their own entertainment. Remember the word empathy: what you think is fun to watch or participate in at another person’s expense is really cyberbullying. And also keep in mind: it could always happen to YOU. Role players are kids who pretend to be someone else just to see if people will believe them. キVengeful Angels are very strange. They are the ones who think they’re right all the time and look for ways to point out when someone is wrong. They get a high off of pointing out how wrong you are, especially if a lot of bystanders back them up—it makes the Vengeful Angel feel as if she is saving the world. キMean Girls—you’ve all seen the movie. This done by girls to girls—it’s called social bullying—especially when they use it to make you feel excluded from the group. Mean Girls get a little ego boost by getting girls to rally around them and make others feel left out. Very similar to the Vengeful Angels. キPower Hungry- These are some of the vicious type of bullies. They have intent to harm and truly get a kick of out hurting people. They’re very creative because they want a reaction. キRevenge of The Nerds—this is interesting. Kids who have been bullied and cyberbullied often try to retaliate, especially if they’re good at computers. I will tell you that all of you will be tempted to retaliate and get revenge if you are cyberbullied. But you will hurt yourself even more if you do—I promise you that. It can range from getting even more bullied to crossing a legal line and parents as you’ve seen with the Star Wars kid are starting to sue other parents at this point. I’ll show you at the end how you can deal with this without revenge.
  16. Warning wars Many Internet Service Providers offer a way of “telling on” a user who is saying inappropriate things. Kids often engage in “warning wars” which can lead to kicking someone offline for a period of time. While this should be a security tool, kids sometimes use the Warn button as a game or prank.
  17. Internet Polling Who’s Hot? Who’s Not? Who is the biggest slut in the sixth grade? These types of questions run rampant on the Internet polls, all created by yours truly – kids and teens. Such questions are often very offensive to others and are yet another way that kids can “bully” other kids online.
  18. Instant Messaging Harassment (aka Flaming) Kids may send hateful or threatening messages to other kids, without realizing that while not said in real life, unkind or threatening messages are hurtful and very serious.
  19. Website Bashing キChildren used to tease each other in the playground; now they do it on Web sites kids sometimes create Web sites that may insult or endanger another child. They create pages specifically designed to insult another kid or group of people. キKids also post other kids’ personal information and pictures, which put those.
  20. Impersonation A kid/teen may create a screenname that is very similar to another kid’s name. The name may have an additional “i” or one less “e”. They may use this name to say inappropriate things to other users while posing as the other person.
  21. Outing:Humilation/Ridicule Exposing secrets online or pictures to embarrass or ridicule someone. For example, in one case, a boy posted a bunch of blogs about his breakup with his ex-girlfriend, explaining how she destroyed his life, calling her degrading names. Their mutual friends read about this and criticized her. She was embarrassed and hurt all because another kid posted mean, private, and false information about her.
  22. Cyberstalking Probably the most serious tactic of cyberbullying—this is repeated, intense harrassment, that includes threats or creates fear. This is usually considered a crime.
  23. How to make yourself flame-resistant. But how can you avoid getting bullied. キBe very selective with your buddy list. キNever give out very personal info (even to friends). キThink b4 u Click …check to see who ur sending message to, JK or :-) [IM language matters] キDon’t let people take compromising pics of u or put up on social networking sites …keep ur info PRIVATE キDo not engage in revenge / cyberbullying yourself …Take 5 if something upsets you What happens when you get bullied? Who do you turn to? (According to a study by I-Safe America, 42 percent of kids between 4th and eighth grade admitted to being bullied or harrassed online. 42%--let’s use your math—that’s nearly half of all those kids!) And of those kids, very few went to a parent or an adult about it. Can you guess why? Answers; teens are generally afraid that adults will overreact in one of two ways: A)Cuz they’ll take away your technology, cell phones, computer, etc—which cuts you off socially, and leaves you vulnerable if you need to know if people are still bullying you. B)Teens are afraid that adults will overreact and bring it up with a school which really triggers the fear that the online retaliation will even be worse.
  24. And don’t forget to Google Yourself or introduce them to Kartoo.com
  25. At what point do you take action? Let’s say your reputation is getting dissed—save everything. Trust your gut: and use this as a guide: Is it annoying? The things that are said about you are foolish (but not agonizing). It’s someone’s opinion, but it bothers you it’s out there. Ignore it. Is it truly hurtful? Someone is spreading false information about you repeatedly that is damaging your reputation. It is causing you emotional distress to the point where you can’t eat or sleep or stop thinking about it? Tell parents: trusted friend: school admin: ISP provider
  26. Is it a threat? This is where you have more power: The following kinds of speech can lead to arrest and prosecution: キMaking threats of violence to people or property キTrying to force someone to do something he or she doesn’t want to do (coercion). キMaking obscene or harassing phone calls (including text messaging) キHarrassment or stalking キHate or bias crimes (like racial slurs or gay slurs) キSending any sexually explicit images キTaking a photo where privacy is expected like a locker room.
