AvoidingCommunication Difficulties
Definitions Bias showing preference for one point of view, or result, or idea over another Prejudice showing dislike, for one point of  view over another having a negative opinion about an person or group, before good reasons are given for that opinion
Stereotyping choosing a characteristic from a small group of people, and applying it to that entire group of people Ethnocentrism believing your own culture is “the best”
Communication Roadblocks You-Messages make communication more difficult “You lied to me.” “You were too lazy – that’s why you didn’t get the work done!” “You have clean your room!” “You are never on time!” Hearing a you-message can sometimes make people feel attacked we become defensive cannot move forward with communication
Communication Bridges I – messages take the pressure off a message and state feelings or personal thoughts “I feel… “I think… “I would like it if…” A well-phrased personal thought or feeling cannot be “wrong”
