3. 3 3 Vision Statement A business and technology incubator for software engineering students and professionals from all backgrounds. A workplace without glass ceilings for the historically-excluded – where all can thrive without pleading for inclusion. The time is now. Motto: For all. By Us.
4. 4 4 Strategic Goals Mold Technology Talent: Create an online software development community where computer scientists from historically-excluded communities can come together to build innovative software technologies. Create a friendly workplace for business and technology professionals from historically-excluded communities. Build Successful Technology Businesses: Launch viable/profitable software technology ventures owned, in significant part, by universities servicing historically-excluded communities. Promote humanitarian and environmental causes on a global scale.
5. 5 Establish lasting partnerships between computer science departments in historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) and those in leading universities in India. Create an online software development community of over 300 members by December 2010, including computer science undergraduate, graduate and post-graduate students from HBCUs and software developers from other historically-excluded communities. Host EarthKong’s first annual conference at an HBCU by December 2010. Incubate and champion artificial intelligence technologies, innovative enterprise software and captivating consumer apps developed by the EarthKong community. Launch site for developer collaboration, including requirements gathering, design, inspections, coding, building, testing and distribution. Launch 3 viable EarthKong ventures by December 2010 5 2010 Business Objectives
6. 6 It starts when skilled students and professionals from historically-excluded communities (e.g., HBCU computer science students) contribute their talent to an EarthKong venture. The software development project makes money through licensing, subscription or advertising fees. A venture built from scratch on a philosophy of inclusion thrives. Leading developers from the EarthKong community are hired. EarthKong invests in software ventures founded by its members. At least 20% of EarthKong revenue is donated to one/all of the following: Early childhood education and after-school programs in historically-neglected communities. Scholarships to students attending colleges and universities established to meet the educational needs of historically-excluded communities. Leading global organizations promoting humanitarian and environmental protection causes. 6 Philosophy on Giving Back
9. 9 Considerations Which universities will participate? Which HBCUs? Which non-HBCUs? How do we establish partnerships with universities in India? Can universities grant their students course credit for contributing code to EarthKong ventures? How about providing scholarships to foreign developers who contribute code? What’s the idea submission process for the incubator? What should be the market focus? Software products or software services? Consumer software or enterprise software? Enterprise software typically requires significant integration and customization services, which students may not be able to provide. Vertical/niche or horizontal? For products, should we have a licensing fee, subscription fee or advertising revenue model?
