Neo Frontier

Gyeongsang National University (GNU) is the flagship institution representing Gyeongnam. GNU was initially
founded as Jinju Provincial Agricultural College in 1948, became a national institution in 1968, was re-named
Gyeongsang in 1972 and became accredited as a university in 1980. GNU consists of three campuses: Gajwa,
Chilam and Tongyeong, with 760 professors, an enrollment of 24,000 students, 500 administrative employees,
100 departments, and 9 graduate schools.
Keeping pace with the world, GNU in Gyeongnam is cultivating core global leaders. GNU is a successful model in
three specialty fields – biological science, mechanical/aerospace engineering and new nano materials. We also
cultivate highly-skilled health and medical professionals from the Graduate School of Medicine, the College of
Nursing, the College of Pharmacy, the Graduate School of Public Health, the Graduate School of Food and Medicine, GNU Hospital and the new GNU Hospital in Changwon that will open in 2015.
In order to attain GNU’s vision, ‘The university in Gyeongnam keeping pace with the world - ACTIVE GNU!’, we
have set as our objectives to: 1) improve and advance education; 2) specialize and integrate research, and 3) localize and globalize community services. GNU supports 30 specialized education programs by department, nurtures 30 research groups with competiveness, and also assists an additional 30 local collaboration programs
and community services in order to achieve these objectives.
GNU has distinguished itself in government-funded enterprises among other well-known universities in the nation. GNU operates 9 Graduate School enterprises in Brain Korea 21, and 6 enterprises in World Class University
(WCU), which ranked #1 in the interim evaluation in December 2010. The Systems & Synthetic Agrobiotech Center
was selected as part of the Next Generation Bio Green 21 Enterprise by the Rural Development Administration,
and the Agro-Medical Fusion Enterprise is being actively promoted to supplement the welfare of rural areas.
GNU was selected as an Education Capacity Building Enterprise for four years in a row and has obtained many
enterprises from the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, the Rural Development Administration and
other local governments, and uses government funds for scholarships.
All GNU members work together to realize our ‘ACTIVE & GLOBAL University’. Through our Global Pioneer Program (GPP), overseas volunteer services and English Only Zone Program, GNU cultivates global leaders for the
21st century.
Watch GNU as we provide our students with personality programs that will be fundamental to their lives; administer career-developing programs that will bring them affluence and promote the wisdom and generosity

The College of Medicine was established by passionate, young faculty and alumni and has worked
hard to improve its quality of education since its
opening. Despite its short history, the students are
at the top of KMLE results (97.5% pass rate for the
past five years), receiving “complete recognition”
from the Korean Medical School Certification Committee in 2003. We are on equal footing with other
outstanding medical schools in terms of education,
research and facilities.

Professor Park Ki Hun (College of Agriculture and Life Sciences) has developed a material that targets specific liver cancer molecules
His research has been published in the online edition of Hepatology, one of
the most authorative liver research journals
• Discovered the protein TM4SF5, that causes and metastasizes liver cancer and controls
the protein to develop a liver cancer cure by targeting specific molecules
• Developed TSAHC, derived from natural sources, which can control the
TM4SF5 protein
• Because TSAHC selectively suppresses two important liver cancercausing factors – tumor metastasis and tumor nurturing capillary
cells – by targeting specific molecules, it can be a more effective tumor treatment with far fewer side effects

After establishing seven sub-enterprises to maximize R&D efficiency, the
Next-generation Bio Green 21 enterprise selected Professor Lee as the
Director after two judicious reviews. The seven sub-enterprises are: Systems & Synthetic Agrobiotech enterprise, Next-generation Genetic Research enterprise, Animal Genetic Breeding enterprise, Botanical
Molecular Breeding enterprise, GM Crop Commercializing enterprise,
Agrobiological Food & Medicine Development enterprise, and the Animal
Biology Medicine enterprise.
The Systems & Synthetic Agrobiotech Center develops advanced technologies through systematic biological analysis on agricultural organism
metabolism. This enterprise seeks to manufacture higher-value-added
materials, to improve metabolic control and the use of new functional bio
parts, develop the relevant technologies and then transfer them to industry. It will soon be possible to develop original agricultural and life science
technologies, to regulate and redesign metabolism through a combination
of systematic and synthetic biology, and metabolic engineering. This will
allow mass production of useful compounds, and development of agricultural super-organisms for high-value compounds. We are working to

The Department of Korean Language Literature is focused on research and education on the Korean language and its literature. It has a goal of helping
students understand Korean language and literature
better, and looking at international literature.


Being aware that English is a ‘must’ in a global society,
the Department of English Language Literature aims
to continually improve the English proficiency of its students. We constantly strive to nurture key human capital towards becoming global leaders by providing
in-depth English literature and linguistic programs.

The Department of German Language Literature will
increase understanding of German literature and culture. With the ability to speak German, students will be

Department of Russian Studies
The Department of Russian Studies offers a joint-degree program with Transbaikal State University in Russia and Semey State Pedagogical Institute in
Kazakhstan with an increased need to understand
Russian culture, in light of the rapid changes in Eastern
Europe and the former USSR.

Literature
The Department of French Language Literature helps
students improve French proficiency and offers courses
in French literature and linguistics. It also aims to promote French society, history, culture, and geography to

Department of Korean Classics
in Chinese
The Department of Korean Classics in Chinese provides
systematic programs for overall Korean study to help
foster values, morality and humanitarianism in students. Through Confucian classics, the Apprentice classics, and historical books, students can learn traditional
Korean culture and thought.

Department of Ethnic Dance
Connections with universities which focus on the investigation of overseas ethnic dances are considered important in the Department of Ethnic Dance. From 2007,
the Department of Ethnic Dance has operated a joint
B.A. degree program with Sichuan University, China.

Educating students to become independent,
creative and ready for the 21st century
The College of Humanities offers 10 departments in language, history, philosophy and geography. There are
63 faculty members who teach and research with energy in order to nurture independent and creative human
capital. The affiliated Humanities Research Center (Korean, Oriental, and Occidental) and the Research Institute
of Gyeongnam Culture (Gyeongnam Cultural Research Center, Nammyung Study Research Center) pursue important values, organize local culture and pass it down to the next generation.

60% of the earth biosphere. It is important because these microbes are
closely related to disease, food, and the environment, key factors in human
health. By using highly advanced molecular biology techniques, the Department of Microbiology teaches students about microbe metabolism, inheritance patterns, and interaction with their surroundings, as well as their
variations. Labs and lectures will provide the necessary knowledge in applied fields such as biological engineering, genetic engineering, the environment, and purification processes.


The Department of Mathematics provides programs of mathematical problem-solving and techniques of computer use. Through programs, students

The College of Business helps student dreams come true. We prepare students with practical training, a
mentoring program that pairs each student up with a professor, and an improved curriculum that reflects
the changing business environment. Students also participate in the study-abroad programs to become
more competitive. The College of Business consists of the Department of Business Administration, the
Department of Management Information Systems, the Department of International Trade and the Department of Accounting. The College has 27 professors involved in both education and research, and all students have access to fully equipped facilities, language training labs, and study rooms. Opened at the end
of 2005, the ‘LG Pioneer Hall’ offers optimal study rooms for students preparing for various national exams.
