1. Instrumentation Technician
Based at Lancaster
We are seeking an enthusiastic and practical person with expertise in electronics and, ideally,
programming to join an active group of environmental scientists at our Lancaster site. The primary roles of
this post will be to:
Calibrate and maintain existing electronic field and laboratory sensors
Design, build and deploy new electronic equipment
Use, modify and develop data-logger programs to collect sensor data
Assist in routine lake and terrestrial fieldwork
Horizon-scan emerging sensor technologies for scientific opportunities.
Main duties
The main focus of the post will be on the application of automated monitoring and sensing technology in
freshwater and terrestrial environments. The post-holder will be responsible for the installation,
deployment, calibration and maintenance of electronic field equipment, including networks of state-of-theart automated monitoring devices and the CEH Mesocosm Facility. In addition, the post-holder will take
part in scientific field work on lakes and remote terrestrial sites, including those in the UK Environmental
Change Network. The successful applicant will become part of the Lake Ecosystems Group, one of the
largest groupings of freshwater research scientists in the country, based at CEH's Lancaster site.
Skills and attributes required
Degree, HND or equivalent, ideally in an engineering or science subject
Qualification and / or experience in electronics
An aptitude for programming
Ability to design and build simple pieces of electronic and mechanical equipment without close
technical supervision
Be prepared to work in the field under difficult conditions
Be proactive, self-motivated and able to work on your own initiative
Be able to work flexibly and to deadlines
Have a practical attitude with the ability to problem-solve
Have good communication and teamwork skills
Have a full driving licence
Some knowledge of, or interest in, ecology would be beneficial.
