The agile approach values iteration and learning over fixed outcomes and mental rigidity. Given the power of these ideas, what if we were to apply agile methodologies to our own lives? In this talk, content strategist and filmmaker David Dylan Thomas describes how he’s attempted to do just that and the impact it’s had on his life. He’ll also explore how technology has evolved to better leverage unpredictability and how that relates to agile being a better way to think about life and ourselves. As a content strategist for EPAM, David Dylan Thomas has developed strategies for major clients in entertainment, publishing, and retail. He is the founder of Content Camp, co-organizer of Barcamp Philly, head of Content Strategy Philly, and the creator, director, and co-producer of Developing Philly, a web series about the rise of the Philadelphia tech community. He has given lectures on such topics as the future of content in a post-ownership economy and the hidden power of online links. To find out more about Dave you can find him here: @movie_pundit

Networks come in all shapes and sizes. However, if you want to be a system shifting network you will need to put in place scaffolding so that transformation can emerge easily and quickly. In nature, billions of soil organisms and mycorrhizal fungal mats work together to form this type of scaffolding to distribute resources and support the growth of plants and trees as they create a forest. There are 6 basic structures that work together to create an environment for rapid change. Some, such as innovation funds, have been prototyped by many different networks. Others, such as communications systems and governance systems, are still in their infancy. Join June Holley and Yasmin Yonis from Network Weaver for a discussion about the necessary scaffolding for truly transformational networks.

Workshop for SEDA 2016 We know that networks play an important role in academic life (Moron-Garcia, 2013) especially when dealing with the “unhomeliness” (Manathunga, 2007) of life as an academic developer, working across disciplinary and professional borders. This workshop will showcase an ongoing learning space collaboration that started over a casual conversation at a network meeting sharing conundrums and developed into a wider conversation across two institutions at different stages of learning space development. Between us, we will reflect on the power of conversation (Barrett et al., 2004), practices learnt and shared and highlight the importance of building inter-professional networks within and across institutions in order to inform and guide change (Pennington, 2003). As leaders in the academy academic developers are often given the tricky institutional conundrums to solve, however the delights of our role are the opportunities to build those networks, drawing on the generosity of our various communities enabling us to ask the awkward questions (Cousin, 2013) and answer them together working as a “critical friend in the academy” (Handal, 2008). The activity will allow us to draw on our experiences of engaging in conversations for innovation. We will reflect how our motivations and purposes are different and will change throughout a collaboration, and how we sustain or conclude our work. A number of questions will be addressed with the aim of developing further collaborations among participants, sharing knowledge and establishing that you don’t need to know what you need to know before starting the conversation: How do you ask for help? Who do you ask for help? How do you build networks within and between institutions?

We are currently producing far more data than people can consume – more than we can even process using today’s technology. When there are 750 tweets sent every second, more than 1 million special interest groups on LinkedIn and thousands of publications created by a single firm every year, how do you ensure the right content is getting to the right people? Join Kalev Peekna as he explores ways you can avoid creating the experience of information overload for your audiences. He shares how you can Crack Big Content by organizing, engaging, adapting and analyzing your communications, preventing them from looking, feeling and acting like work. He also provides examples of tools organizations have used to successfully guide overwhelmed readers. To view the webinar recording, visit http://bit.ly/13aWTZ3.

We’re all living in a disruption society. Hundreds if not thousands of new e-mail messages hit our inbox every day. Social media notifications pop up around the clock. With all of these daily distractions, how is a professional supposed to stay focused? And to an even greater degree, as a leader how do you help your team minimize distraction to maintain productivity and produce innovative ideas?

BayCHI March 14, 2006, program: Chandler is trying our exposure to too much information and not enough time to process, make decisions from the information available. Despite being in the information age, most of our decisions are still based on gut instinct, high-level impressions, tunnel vision (knee-jerk reaction), or someone elses summary. GTD or Getting Things Done is a task management system or methodology. It is a way of life. It is about putting things where they mean something to you. It is a trusted system. A trusted system is one that is complete and up-to-date. The relationship between Chandler and GTD is such that Chandler is like a Unitarian church in relation to GTD. Chandler deals with the "spirit of the law" as opposed to the "letter of the law". Chandler picked out high level concepts that are universal and implemented a system aligned with GTD.

While traditional scholarship has tended to emphasize thorough reading, reflection, and learning, many researchers nowadays – both in academia and industry – find themselves in a fast-paced and demanding environment. A successful research career crucially depends on management-related skills, and devoting some time to such skills is likely to pay off very quickly. One important example is time and task management, which is critical when there are numerous conflicting demands and opportunities. Another example is being able to cope with challenges and failure. Researchers also need to be creative and bold in defending their ideas. This talk provides an overview of these and other skills that are vital in modern research environments.

You likely have a lot of great learning content in your library. How do you get it to mobile devices without attempting (and likely failing) the dreaded conversion process? It can be difficult to think through the ideation process to bring new life into your content for the small screen and the on-the-go mobile learner. Session participants will examine a number of high-profile success stories and gain insight into the instructional design process used to marry mobile user-experience design and existing content. You’ll see examples, case studies, and process documents, and you will explore real-world examples on how to successfully refocus your efforts to create great mobile learning.
