What Is Stress?
• Modern life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations,
and demands. For many people, stress is so
commonplace that it has become a way of life. Stress
isn’t always bad. In small doses, it can help you
perform under pressure and motivate you to do your
best. But when you’re constantly running in emergency
mode, your mind and body pay the price.
• If you frequently find yourself feeling frazzled and
overwhelmed, it’s time to take action to bring your
nervous system back into balance. You can protect
yourself by learning how to recognize the signs and
symptoms of stress and taking steps to reduce its
  harmful effects
What Is Stress?
• Stress is a normal physical response to events that
make you feel threatened or upset your balance in
some way. When you sense danger – whether it’s real
or imagined – the body's defenses kick into high gear in
a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or-
flight” reaction, or the stress response.
• The stress response is the body’s way of protecting
you. When working properly, it helps you stay
focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency
situations, stress can save your life – giving you extra
strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring
you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident.
What Is Stress?
• The stress response also helps you rise to meet
challenges. Stress is what keeps you on your toes
during a presentation at work, sharpens your
concentration when you’re attempting the game-
winning free throw, or drives you to study for an
exam when you'd rather be watching TV.
• But beyond a certain point, stress stops being
helpful and starts causing major damage to your
health, your mood, your productivity, your
relationships, and your quality of life.
How do you respond to stress?

• It’s important to learn how to recognize when
your stress levels are out of control. The most
dangerous thing about stress is how easily it can
creep up on you. You get used to it. It starts to
feels familiar even normal. You don’t notice how
much it’s affecting you, even as it takes a heavy
  toll.
The signs and symptoms of stress overload can be
  almost anything. Stress affects the
mind, body, and behavior in many ways, and
  everyone experiences stress differently.
The Body’s Stress Response

• When you perceive a threat, your nervous system
responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones,
  including adrenaline and cortisol. These
hormones rouse the body for emergency action.
• Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood
pressure rises, breath quickens, and your senses
become sharper. These physical changes increase
your strength and stamina, speed your reaction
time, and enhance your focus – preparing you to
either fight or flee from the danger at hand.
Signs and symptoms of stress
               overload
1. Cognitive Symptoms
• Memory problems
• Inability to concentrate
• Poor judgment
• Seeing only the negative
• Anxious or racing thoughts
• Constant worrying
Signs and symptoms of stress
               overload
2. Emotional Symptoms
• Moodiness
• Irritability or short temper
• Agitation, inability to relax
• Feeling overwhelmed
• Sense of loneliness and isolation
• Depression or general unhappiness
Signs and symptoms of stress
              overload
3. Physical Symptoms
• Aches and pains
• Diarrhea or constipation
• Nausea, dizziness
• Chest pain, rapid heartbeat
• Loss of sex drive
• Frequent colds
Signs and symptoms of stress
               overload
4. Behavioral Symptoms
• Eating more or less
• Sleeping too much or too little
• Isolating yourself from others
• Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities
• Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax
• Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)
Causes of stress

1. Common external causes of stress
• Major life changes
• Work
• Relationship difficulties
• Financial problems
• Being too busy
• Children and family
Causes Of Stress
2. Common internal causes of stress
• Inability to accept uncertainty
• Pessimism
• Negative self-talk
• Unrealistic expectations
• Perfectionism
• Lack of assertiveness
Effects of chronic stress

• The body doesn’t distinguish between physical and psychological
threats. When you’re stressed over a busy schedule, an argument
with a friend, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body reacts
just as strongly as if you were facing a life-or-death situation. If you
have a lot of responsibilities and worries, your emergency stress
response may be “on” most of the time. The more your body’s
stress system is activated, the easier it is to trip and the harder it is
  to shut off.
• Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems.
Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise
blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of
heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the
aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving
you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.
Many health problems are caused or
       exacerbated by stress, including
• Pain of any kind
• Heart disease
• Digestive problems
• Sleep problems
• Depression
• Obesity
• Autoimmune diseases
• Skin conditions, such as eczema, Psoriasis
Stress Management
• What is stress management ?
• Treatment of depression by western psychiatry
has several shortcomings viewed from the
eastern point of view. Most medications for
major depression have strong side effects. No
effective treatment exists for people who are just
feeling temporarily low. There are no ways to
prevent depression from the allopathy point of
view. About half of the people treated for
depression experience a recurrence or relapse.
Stress Management
• Western antidepressant medications typically require a
minimum of three weeks to take effect. Ayurvedic
treatments, though gentler, begin to produce results
more quickly, within a few days or even a few hours.
The two treatments are compatible. (If you use the
herbal treatments prescribed in Ayurveda, make sure
that there is no interaction with the antidepressants
and check with your doctor before taking any herbs if
you are taking prescription medications.) Ayurvedic
treatments, if used complementarily, may help you to
reduce your antidepressant dosage ultimately. Do this
only with the approval of your doctor after reviewing
  all facts
Stress Management
• What type of causes of depression From
  Ayurvedic Perspective ?
• From the standpoint of Ayurveda there are
two main causes of depression. An imbalance
in the three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
• A lack of awareness of one's deeper, inner
  Self.
Stress Management Ayurvedic
               Perspective
• From the Ayurvedic point of view, most depression is a
kapha imbalance that is the culmination of vata and then
pitta going out of balance. Initially the brain's
electrochemistry has an erratic overreaction (vata
imbalance), which triggers a loss of enzymatic activity in
the metabolism (pitta imbalance). Kapha responds by trying
to glue everything down, bringing about heaviness,
darkness, and stagnation that the mind-body interprets as
the negative message of hopelessness and depression. In
other words, because of specific etiological factors, vata
from the colon, pitta from the intestine, or kapha from the
stomach enters the general circulation and lodges in the
nervous system, interferes with normal functioning of the
mind and nervous system, and causes depression.
Stress Management Ayurvedic
             Perspective
• Sometimes depression is a pitta disorder.
Allergies and the breakdown in metabolic
processes they lead to can also disturb brain
chemistry. This can cause dramatic mood
swings, with depression as one of the
consequences. Vata imbalance also can cause
  depression
Stress Management Ayurvedic
             Perspective
• Ayurvedic Body-Type Treatments for
  Depression
• The treatment is based on the mind-body
constitution of the person and which dosha is
  in imbalance.
Stress Management Ayurvedic
               Perspective
• In contrast, Ayurvedic methods of treating depression
are gentle, natural, and effective. They contribute to a
long-lasting state of balance that reduce the tendency
toward recurrences. It offers a more complete
understanding of the nature and causes of depression.
Ayurveda offers a more effective treatment of
depression without negative side effects and the real
possibility of prevention. It promotes higher levels of
psychological health. Ayurvedic methods not only
increase the balance in the body, they also
progressively raise the overall level of inner
contentment. This is a natural antidote to depression
Stress Management By Ayurvedic
               Way
• In Ayurvedic Perspective The Stress
Management Proceedure divide In 2 Mode,

• 1.Life Style Management

• 2.Ayurved Panchakarma Proceedures and
  Medicines.
1.Life style Management
• In sanskrit the daily routine is called as "Dinacharya". It
means to merge your daily cycle with the natural cycle of
the Sun, Moon, Earth and the other planets in our Solar
system. "Dinacharya" is one of the best things that you can
do to stay in balance, prevent disease and treat almost any
  disease.
• One way to describe the daily cycle is in terms of the
"Doshas", "Vata",the air element:"Pitta", the fire element
and "Kapha", the water element. "Vata" is dominant from 2
to 6 in the morning and afternoon. "Kapha" is from 6 to 10
in the morning and evening, and "Pitta" is during mid day
and midnight. Keep in touch with these energies during the
day and move with them, not against them.
Life Style management
• Waking
• From 2 to 6 the "Vata" element is dominant. The ideal
time to aise is around 4:30 to 5. This is the time when
there is the most "Sattva" in the air. It is the most fresh
and pure time of the day. Some exceptions to this rule
of rising are the very young, the old, parents with small
children and people with fevers or diarrhoea.
• Realization
• Take a moment to see your ture nature. Remember
what your are. Fall into that.
• Breathe
• Take a short stroll outside and soak up the good vibes.
Life Style Manegement
• Elimination
• As soon as possible empty your colon and
bladder. If you wait until later in the morning
or during the day you are slowly poisoning
yourself and creating an opportunity for
  chronic conditions to arise.
Life Style Management
• Clean The Senses
• Wash the eyes with rose water and "Triphala" to purify
the sight. Wash your ears and apply a tiny amount of
sesame or almond oil in them to purify your hearing.
Brush your teeth and scrape your tongue with a tongue
cleaner to purify your mouth and sense of taste. Gargle
with warm water or herbal tea. Finally do "Jal-neti" and
put a little oil in your nose to purify the sinuses and
your sense of smell. The traditional "Dinacharya" also
recommends that you inhale the smoke of medicinal
herbs every morning to purify the mind, head, face,
  neck and lungs.
Life Style Management
• Oil Massage
• A major part of aging is the drying out of
tissue that results in slower transport of
nutrients into the cell and body and toxic
wastes out of the body. Oil massage removes
this dryness, removes stangated flows and
organs, and nurtures your mind and your
body. It also makes your skin look great if you
  use the right oil.
Life Style Managemnet
• Exercise
• "Vyayama" is the name for physical exercise. This can be
anything including "Yoga", walk, tai chi, a swim or whatever.
This early morning exercise removes stangation in the body
mind, strengthens the digestive fire, reduces fat and gives
you an overall feeling of lightness and joy.
• Bathing
• After exercise bath to remove any excess oil and dirt.
Usually warm water baths are suggested, but do not put
very warm water o the neck and head, as this will throw
you off balance. Bathing increases the digestive fire,
especially if the water is a little cold. Put on clean clothing
after the bath and apply essential oils as you wish.
Life Style Management
• Meditation
• For a few minutes to an hour sit down and see who you really
are, focus on focus, put your attention on awareness. See and be
only conscious.Simply be quiet. Sit in peace for just a little while.
• Breakfast
• Take a light breakfast.Western science has studied the aging process
for sometime and has come up with only one practice that is
definitely anti-aging. This is to minimize calories while maximising
  nutrients.
• Lunch (10:30 to 12:30)
• This is the main meal of the day so eat a healthy nutritious meal
that has moderate calories. After the meal it is good to take a little
walk, a couple hundred steps only, to help the food digest.
Life Style Management
• Sundown
• Sundown is a special time of balance between day and night. This is the
time for evening prayers and meditations in many cultures around the
  world.
• Dinner (6:00 to 7:00)
• This meal should be lighter than lunch. After dinner take a peaceful walk
  with family and friends.
• Ease
• From dinner to bedtime just take it easy. Spend time with family, read, and
  relax.
• Bedtime
• Around 10:00 go to sleep so that you can get 6 to 7 hours of sleep before
4:30 am. A good practice is to massage the soles of your feet with calming
ol before going to bed. This will calm your system and promote well being.
Ayurveda
"Ayu" means life and "Veda" means knowledge from the
Vedic texts. This holistic science is the knowledge of
complete balance of the Body, Mind and Spirit, including
emotions and psychology, on all levels.

Ayurveda
Ayurveda is an ancient science of life, a traditional and the oldest
and most holistic medical system available on the planet today. Its
major premise involves the symbiosis of mind, body and spirit.

Any imbalance in this synthesis results in physical ailments. This
ancient Indian medicine seeks to reestablish the harmony between
the body and its habitat.

It was placed in written form over 5,000 years ago in India, it was
said to be a world medicine dealing with both body and the spirit.
Before the advent of writing, the ancient wisdom of this healing
system was a part of the spiritual tradition of the Vedic Religion.

This has been handed down to us by means of ancient venerable
scripts as palm leaf books, leather leaves, etc. The oldest works in
Ayurveda still available are the Charaka Samhita, Susrutha Samhita
                                 and Ashtanga Samgraha.
2.Panchakarma
          (Ayurvedic Detoxification)
• Panchakarma
• Ayurveda emphasizes preventative and healing
therapies along with various methods of purification
and rejuvenation. Ayurveda is more than a mere
healing system, it is a science and art of appropriate
living which helps to achieve longevity. It can also guide
every individual in the prevention of disease and long
term maintenance of health. To achieve this balanced
state of body, mind and consciousness, Ayurveda
prescribes Panchakarma Therapy for the cleansing of
  body toxins.
Stress Management By Ayurvedic Way
          2.Panchakarma Treatment
• What is Panchakarma?
• As the name suggests, Pancha in Sanskrit stands for Five and Karma
are the therapeutic measures, therefore Panchakarma means five
types of therapeutic measures. These are undertaken for the
purification of the body and Ayurveda considers it necessary before
the start of any other therapy. The logic being that as a cloth needs
to be purified or cleaned of impurities and dust before it can be
permeated with a new color, similarly the body needs to be purified
before it can be permeated with new colors of youthfulness, health
and vigor etc. In fact, most of the time, Panchakarma is an end in
itself rather than a prelude to other therapeutic measures.
Stress Management By Ayurvedic Way
         2.Panchakarma Treatment
• The Panchakarma therapy of Ayurveda is comprised of
five basic types of advanced treatment for the
evacuation of vitiated Dosha (toxic materials) from the
body. One can consider this as a body de-tox program.
There are so many subtypes of this therapy and
different types of herbal massages, fomentation's such
as steam, external oil treatments, Basti (medicated
enemas), Virechana (purgation through herbs), Vamana
(emesis through herbs), Nasya (nasal administration of
oils) etc. are also incorporated. These practices are
extremely helpful in relieving deep seated diseases as
well as being beneficial for maintaining and improving
  physical and mental health.

• individually to each person according to their specific
constitution and specific disorder or needs; the
treatment requires close observation and supervision.
• Why I shall opt for Panchakarma ?
• It is recommended for healthy persons and also as a
preventive treatment to keep physically and mentally
fit and energetic. It is also given, although not always,
at the junction period between two seasons, thus
helping a person to prepare their internal environment
  for the oncoming season

          2.Panchakarma Treatment
• Purvakarma: Pre-purification Measures for Panchakarma
Before the actual operation of purification begins, there is a
need to prepare the body in prescribed methods to
encourage the release of toxins. The two procedures are
  Snehana and Swedana.
• Snehana (Abhyangam) is the oil massage. Oil is applied to
the entire body with a particular type of massage which
helps the toxins to move towards the gastro-intestinal tract.
Oil massage also makes the superficial and deep tissues
soft and supple, thus helping to remove stress and to
nourish the nervous system. Snehana is given daily for
three to seven days, as indicated.

         2.Panchakarma Treatment
• Swedana(Medicated Steambath) is sudation
or sweating and is given every day
immediately following the Snehana. An herbal
concoction may be added to the steam to
further loosen the toxins from the individual.
Swedana liquefies the toxins and increases the
movement of toxins into the gastro-intestinal
  tract.
Pradhanakarma: Main Purification
     measures of Panchakarma
• Vamana: Emesis Therapy
When there is congestion in the lungs causing
repeated attacks of bronchitis, colds, cough or
  asthma, the Ayurvedic treatment is
therapeutic vomiting - Vamana, to eliminate
the Kapha whic is causing the excess mucus.

         2.Panchakarma Treatment
• Virechana: Purgation Therapy
When excess bile, Pitta, is secreted and
accumulated in the gall bladder, liver and
small intestine, it tends to result in
  rashes, skin inflammation, acne, chronic
attacks of fever, vomiting, nausea and
  jaundice. Ayurvedic literature suggests in
  these conditions the administration of
therapeutic purgation or a therapeutic laxative

             2.Panchakarma Treatment
• Basti: Enema Therapy
Vata's predominant site is the colon. Ayurvedic Basti
involves the introduction into the rectum of herbal
concoctions of sesame oil, and certain herbal
preparations in a liquid medium. Basti, is the most
effective treatment of Vata disorders, although many
enemas over a prescribed period of time are usually
required. It relieves constipation, distention, chronic
fever, cold, sexual disorders, kidney stones, heart
pain, backache, sciatica and other pains in the joints.
Many other Vata disorders such as
arthritis, rheumatism, gout, muscle spasms and
headaches may also be treated with Basti

Anuvasana Basti - medicated oil enemas
• &
• Niruha Basti - medicated enema of
  decoctions and medicated oils.
Ayurvedic
          Panchakarma(Detoxification)
• Why Panchakarma ?
• According to Ayurveda, every human being is a unique phenomenon of
cosmic consciousness. The three Dosha (humors) determine every
individual’s psychosomatic temperament or constitution. Vata (ether plus
air), Pitta (fire plus water) and Kapha (water plus earth) are called the
Tridosha, meaning the three Dosha. The internal environment is governed
by Vata -Pitta -Kapha (V-P-K), which is constantly reacting to the external
environment. The wrong diet, habits, lifestyle, incompatible food
combinations (e.g. milk and fish, melons and grain, yogurt and meat or
cooked honey etc.), seasonal changes, repressed emotions and stress
factors can all act either together or separately to change the balance of
V-P-K. According to the nature of the cause, Vata, Pitta or Kapha undergo
aggravation or derangement that produce Ama (toxins). To stop the
further production of Ama, Ayurvedic literature suggests placing the
patient on a proper diet together with an appropriate lifestyle, habits and
exercise, and administering a proper cleansing program such as
  Panchakarma.
Ayurvedic Panchakarma
• Word of caution
• Panchakarma is a very special Ayurveda
treatment requiring proper guidance from a
  highly trained and skillful Ayurveda
practitioner. One should consult with an
Ayurveda physician, not just someone with a
modest amount of training prior to deciding
  on these cleansing procedures.
Associated Panchakarma Proceedures
• Other miscellaneous therapies of
  Panchakarma:
• Shirodhara: It is recommended in
  anxiety, depression, hypertension, insomnia
  etc.
• Kati Basti: Useful in different backaches.
• Janu Basti: Useful in arthritis of the knee
  joint.
• Nadi Sweda: Useful in pain disorders of
  different sites.
Associated Panchakarma Proceedures

Massage(Abhyangam)
Abhyanga - The Ayurvedic Daily
              Massage:
• A Pleasant Prescription for Mind/Body Health
• How can a ritual so luxuriously relaxing, so
blissfully comforting as a full-body warm oil

to a healthier body. Helping to lose excess flab and
weight - another cause of ill health. Massaging the

  parts
such as the thyroid gland. Helping to treat several
health disorders - from common ones such as
backaches and arthritis to 'seemingly' unrelated
  disorders such as stammering.
Meditation: What it is?
• An ordinary person may consider meditation
as a worship or prayer. But it is not so.
  Meditation means awareness. Whatever you
do with awareness is meditation. "Watching
your breath" is meditation; listening to the
birds is meditation. As long as these activities
are free from any other distraction to the
  mind, it is effective meditation.
Meditation: What it is?
• Meditation is not a technique but a way of life.
Meditation means 'a cessation of the thought
process' . It describes a state of consciousness,
when the mind is free of scattered thoughts
and various patterns . The observer (one who
is doing meditation) realizes that all the
activity of the mind is reduced to one.

Stress management the Ayurvedic way

  • 1. Stress Management The Ayurvedic Way  Multi Specialty Ayurveda Hospital  Cancer Research Center  Panchakarma & Skin Care Hospital DR.GAURANG JOSHI DR.BHAVNA JOSHI Medical Directors, Atharva Multispeciality Ayurveda Hospital, http://www.ayurvedindia.in Rajkot,Gujarat, http://www.atharvaayurveda.com India. http://www.ayurvedacancercare.com Cell No.+919825163953
  • 2. Asato maa sadgamaya “From the unreal, lead us to the Real; Tamaso maa jyotirgamaya from darkness, lead us unto Light; from Mṛityor maa amṛitam gamaya death, lead us to Immortality. Om Om shaantiḥ shaantiḥ shaantiḥ peace, peace, peace.”
  • 3. What Is Stress? • Modern life is full of hassles, deadlines, frustrations, and demands. For many people, stress is so commonplace that it has become a way of life. Stress isn’t always bad. In small doses, it can help you perform under pressure and motivate you to do your best. But when you’re constantly running in emergency mode, your mind and body pay the price. • If you frequently find yourself feeling frazzled and overwhelmed, it’s time to take action to bring your nervous system back into balance. You can protect yourself by learning how to recognize the signs and symptoms of stress and taking steps to reduce its harmful effects
  • 4. What Is Stress? • Stress is a normal physical response to events that make you feel threatened or upset your balance in some way. When you sense danger – whether it’s real or imagined – the body's defenses kick into high gear in a rapid, automatic process known as the “fight-or- flight” reaction, or the stress response. • The stress response is the body’s way of protecting you. When working properly, it helps you stay focused, energetic, and alert. In emergency situations, stress can save your life – giving you extra strength to defend yourself, for example, or spurring you to slam on the brakes to avoid an accident.
  • 5. What Is Stress? • The stress response also helps you rise to meet challenges. Stress is what keeps you on your toes during a presentation at work, sharpens your concentration when you’re attempting the game- winning free throw, or drives you to study for an exam when you'd rather be watching TV. • But beyond a certain point, stress stops being helpful and starts causing major damage to your health, your mood, your productivity, your relationships, and your quality of life.
  • 6. How do you respond to stress? • It’s important to learn how to recognize when your stress levels are out of control. The most dangerous thing about stress is how easily it can creep up on you. You get used to it. It starts to feels familiar even normal. You don’t notice how much it’s affecting you, even as it takes a heavy toll. The signs and symptoms of stress overload can be almost anything. Stress affects the mind, body, and behavior in many ways, and everyone experiences stress differently.
  • 7. The Body’s Stress Response • When you perceive a threat, your nervous system responds by releasing a flood of stress hormones, including adrenaline and cortisol. These hormones rouse the body for emergency action. • Your heart pounds faster, muscles tighten, blood pressure rises, breath quickens, and your senses become sharper. These physical changes increase your strength and stamina, speed your reaction time, and enhance your focus – preparing you to either fight or flee from the danger at hand.
  • 8. Signs and symptoms of stress overload 1. Cognitive Symptoms • Memory problems • Inability to concentrate • Poor judgment • Seeing only the negative • Anxious or racing thoughts • Constant worrying
  • 9. Signs and symptoms of stress overload 2. Emotional Symptoms • Moodiness • Irritability or short temper • Agitation, inability to relax • Feeling overwhelmed • Sense of loneliness and isolation • Depression or general unhappiness
  • 10. Signs and symptoms of stress overload 3. Physical Symptoms • Aches and pains • Diarrhea or constipation • Nausea, dizziness • Chest pain, rapid heartbeat • Loss of sex drive • Frequent colds
  • 11. Signs and symptoms of stress overload 4. Behavioral Symptoms • Eating more or less • Sleeping too much or too little • Isolating yourself from others • Procrastinating or neglecting responsibilities • Using alcohol, cigarettes, or drugs to relax • Nervous habits (e.g. nail biting, pacing)
  • 12. Causes of stress 1. Common external causes of stress • Major life changes • Work • Relationship difficulties • Financial problems • Being too busy • Children and family
  • 13. Causes Of Stress 2. Common internal causes of stress • Inability to accept uncertainty • Pessimism • Negative self-talk • Unrealistic expectations • Perfectionism • Lack of assertiveness
  • 14. Effects of chronic stress • The body doesn’t distinguish between physical and psychological threats. When you’re stressed over a busy schedule, an argument with a friend, a traffic jam, or a mountain of bills, your body reacts just as strongly as if you were facing a life-or-death situation. If you have a lot of responsibilities and worries, your emergency stress response may be “on” most of the time. The more your body’s stress system is activated, the easier it is to trip and the harder it is to shut off. • Long-term exposure to stress can lead to serious health problems. Chronic stress disrupts nearly every system in your body. It can raise blood pressure, suppress the immune system, increase the risk of heart attack and stroke, contribute to infertility, and speed up the aging process. Long-term stress can even rewire the brain, leaving you more vulnerable to anxiety and depression.
  • 15. Many health problems are caused or exacerbated by stress, including • Pain of any kind • Heart disease • Digestive problems • Sleep problems • Depression • Obesity • Autoimmune diseases • Skin conditions, such as eczema, Psoriasis
  • 16. Stress Management • What is stress management ? • Treatment of depression by western psychiatry has several shortcomings viewed from the eastern point of view. Most medications for major depression have strong side effects. No effective treatment exists for people who are just feeling temporarily low. There are no ways to prevent depression from the allopathy point of view. About half of the people treated for depression experience a recurrence or relapse.
  • 17. Stress Management • Western antidepressant medications typically require a minimum of three weeks to take effect. Ayurvedic treatments, though gentler, begin to produce results more quickly, within a few days or even a few hours. The two treatments are compatible. (If you use the herbal treatments prescribed in Ayurveda, make sure that there is no interaction with the antidepressants and check with your doctor before taking any herbs if you are taking prescription medications.) Ayurvedic treatments, if used complementarily, may help you to reduce your antidepressant dosage ultimately. Do this only with the approval of your doctor after reviewing all facts
  • 18. Stress Management • What type of causes of depression From Ayurvedic Perspective ? • From the standpoint of Ayurveda there are two main causes of depression. An imbalance in the three doshas, Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. • A lack of awareness of one's deeper, inner Self.
  • 19. Stress Management Ayurvedic Perspective • From the Ayurvedic point of view, most depression is a kapha imbalance that is the culmination of vata and then pitta going out of balance. Initially the brain's electrochemistry has an erratic overreaction (vata imbalance), which triggers a loss of enzymatic activity in the metabolism (pitta imbalance). Kapha responds by trying to glue everything down, bringing about heaviness, darkness, and stagnation that the mind-body interprets as the negative message of hopelessness and depression. In other words, because of specific etiological factors, vata from the colon, pitta from the intestine, or kapha from the stomach enters the general circulation and lodges in the nervous system, interferes with normal functioning of the mind and nervous system, and causes depression.
  • 20. Stress Management Ayurvedic Perspective • Sometimes depression is a pitta disorder. Allergies and the breakdown in metabolic processes they lead to can also disturb brain chemistry. • 23. Stress Management By Ayurvedic Way • In Ayurvedic Perspective The Stress Management Proceedure divide In 2 Mode, • 1.Life Style Management • 2.Ayurved Panchakarma Proceedures and Medicines.
  • 24. 1.Life style Management • In sanskrit the daily routine is called as "Dinacharya". It means to merge your daily cycle with the natural cycle of the Sun, Moon, Earth and the other planets in our Solar system. "Dinacharya" is one of the best things that you can do to stay in balance, prevent disease and treat almost any disease. • One way to describe the daily cycle is in terms of the "Doshas", "Vata",the air element:"Pitta", the fire element and "Kapha", the water element. "Vata" is dominant from 2 to 6 in the morning and afternoon. "Kapha" is from 6 to 10 in the morning and evening, and "Pitta" is during mid day and midnight. Keep in touch with these energies during the day and move with them, not against them.
  • 25. Life Style management • Waking • From 2 to 6 the "Vata" element is dominant. The ideal time to aise is around 4:30 to 5. This is the time when there is the most "Sattva" in the air. It is the most fresh and pure time of the day. Some exceptions to this rule of rising are the very young, the old, parents with small children and people with fevers or diarrhoea. • Realization • Take a moment to see your ture nature. Remember what your are. Fall into that. • Breathe • Take a short stroll outside and soak up the good vibes.
  • 26. Life Style Manegement • Elimination • As soon as possible empty your colon and bladder. If you wait until later in the morning or during the day you are slowly poisoning yourself and creating an opportunity for chronic conditions to arise.
  • 27. Life Style Management • Clean The Senses • Wash the eyes with rose water and "Triphala" to purify the sight. Gargle with warm water or herbal tea. Finally do "Jal-neti" and put a little oil in your nose to purify the sinuses and your sense of smell. The traditional "Dinacharya" also recommends that you inhale the smoke of medicinal herbs every morning to purify the mind, head, face, neck and lungs.
  • 28. Life Style Management • Oil Massage • A major part of aging is the drying out of tissue that results in slower transport of nutrients into the cell and body and toxic wastes out of the body. Oil massage removes this dryness, removes stangated flows and organs, and nurtures your mind and your body. It also makes your skin look great if you use the right oil.
  • 29. Life Style Managemnet • Exercise • "Vyayama" is the name for physical exercise. This can be anything including "Yoga", walk, tai chi, a swim or whatever. Usually warm water baths are suggested, but do not put very warm water o the neck and head, as this will throw you off balance. Bathing increases the digestive fire, especially if the water is a little cold. Put on clean clothing after the bath and apply essential oils as you wish.

This is to minimize calories while maximising nutrients. • Lunch (10:30 to 12:30) • This is the main meal of the day so eat a healthy nutritious meal that has moderate calories. After the meal it is good to take a little walk, a couple hundred steps only, to help the food digest.

These are undertaken for the purification of the body and Ayurveda considers it necessary before the start of any other therapy. The logic being that as a cloth needs to be purified or cleaned of impurities and dust before it can be permeated with a new color, similarly the body needs to be purified before it can be permeated with new colors of youthfulness, health and vigor etc. In fact, most of the time, Panchakarma is an end in itself rather than a prelude to other therapeutic measures.

The two procedures are Snehana and Swedana. • Snehana (Abhyangam) is the oil massage. Oil is applied to the entire body with a particular type of massage which helps the toxins to move towards the gastro-intestinal tract. Oil massage also makes the superficial and deep tissues soft and supple, thus helping to remove stress and to nourish the nervous system. Snehana is given daily for three to seven days, as indicated.

  • 46. Ayurvedic Panchakarma(Detoxification) • Why Panchakarma ? • According to Ayurveda, every human being is a unique phenomenon of cosmic consciousness. The three Dosha (humors) determine every individual’s psychosomatic temperament or constitution. Vata (ether plus air), Pitta (fire plus water) and Kapha (water plus earth) are called the Tridosha, meaning the three Dosha. The internal environment is governed by Vata -Pitta -Kapha (V-P-K), which is constantly reacting to the external environment. The wrong diet, habits, lifestyle, incompatible food combinations (e.g. milk and fish, melons and grain, yogurt and meat or cooked honey etc.), seasonal changes, repressed emotions and stress factors can all act either together or separately to change the balance of V-P-K. According to the nature of the cause, Vata, Pitta or Kapha undergo aggravation or derangement that produce Ama (toxins). To stop the further production of Ama, Ayurvedic literature suggests placing the patient on a proper diet together with an appropriate lifestyle, habits and exercise, and administering a proper cleansing program such as Panchakarma.
