La cirugía de catarata aumenta de 3 a 5.7 veces el riesgo de desarrollar degeneración macular relacionada con la edad (DMRE). Varios estudios han encontrado que los pacientes que se someten a cirugía de catarata tienen mayor riesgo de DMRE exudativa y avanzada en comparación con pacientes con cataratas no operadas. Se necesita más investigación sobre los posibles mecanismos como la exposición a la luz azul y violeta.
