2. Introduction
The Institute for the Environment, or IfE, is a rapidly
expanding research centre within Brunel University
housing a strong team of leading experts held in
high international regard in their respective fields.
Although we are a Specialist Research Institute, we
also pride ourselves on the 4 MSc courses that run.
These are all informed by our internationally
respected research.

9. Teaching at IfE
Our academic staff are all excellent teachers: half
our teaching staff were nominated for the Brunel
University Student Led Teaching Awards in 2012 and
our student feedback is consistently excellent. The
university as a whole performed remarkably well in
the 2012 National Student Survey, climbing 78
places to be raked 45th in the UK.
The student to staff ratio within the institute for our
MSc courses is usually around 3.5 to 1, which is
excellent by any standards.
10. Teaching at IfE
Our core teaching is supplemented by guest
lectures from external experts and site visits to key
industrial players. Where possible, we also
encourage and facilitate students to work with
outside partners during their dissertation research.
Our Environmental Science and Climate Change
MSc courses are accredited by the Chartered
Institution of Water and Environmental
Management (CIWEM).
11. Research at IfE
Our research falls into 6 different areas:
Ecotoxicology
Chemicals in the Environment
Human Toxicology and Risk Assessment
Epidemiology and Environmental Health
Climate Science
Natural Hazards

12. PG Research at IfE
We have postgraduate (PG) PhD students working
successfully in all our research areas.
Choosing a research topic is usually an interactive
process between the candidate and us. Often
students have some idea of the general area they
would like to investigate. We have outlined the
research areas where we have particular interests.
