the film?
• The storyline is quickly established.
• The use of high profile, popular actors.
• Humour is used.
• The anti-climax of seriousness makes it funny for the
viewers to watch.

4. what visual aspects stand out?
• The colourful scenes at the news report and then how
that contrasts to the dark, secretive meeting.
• The spot lights that are looking down on each person in
the meeting, but you can’t see their faces. Clearly this
shows that the meeting is secretive and this makes the
audience ask who they are and what they are doing.

5. what sounds are used?
• Voiceover for news report to give outline
information.
• Dialogue to explain the situation in the meeting.
• Dramatic music in the meeting to create tension and
drama.
• More upbeat music when change in scene to show
less serious atmosphere.

6. The use of text
• Text is used to show where the news report has taken
place, it is white, small and down the bottom of the
screen, like a real news report.
• In the credits, the blue text matches the sea.

7. Introduction to characters
• We are introduced to a few of the main characters:
• The Malaysian Prime Minister – we learn of his actions and how
they put him in danger.
• Mugatu – we find out he is a designer. He is sat on his own in the
meeting with his dog to show he is the main character in this
meeting.
• Derek Zoolander – we discover that he is a male model, he is very
dumb and will be targeted to assassinate the Malaysian Prime
Minister.
• Matilda – we see she is a journalist who is involved in the fashion
industry.

genre of the film?
• Yes, the opening is funny and the genre is a comedy, so
simply it helps guess the genre by using comedy in the
opening minutes.

9. How do you think the opening is
supposed to make you feel?
• Simply, the opening is meant to make you laugh. As it is
a comedy the main aim is to basically impress you with
humour.

10. Why is the film opening so powerful?
• The opening shows a serious storyline with the aspect of
death and murder but it also mixes it with comedy. This
makes it interesting and unique.
