Roman was the first emperor of the Roman Empire, which he established after defeating his rivals in a civil war. As the founder of the Roman Principate, he centralized the bureaucracy and standing armies that allowed the empire to effectively govern its vast territory. Under his rule, Roman dominion expanded to include much of Western Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.
