Mahatma gandhi & non violence first day cover 2nd october 2009
This is Mahatma Gandhi & Non Violence first day cover of the year 2009.
The United Nations recognizes a philosophical connection between the human rights principles in its
universal declaration and those that Mahatma Gandhi used. Gandhi was born in India on October 2, 1869.
He is remembered today for his contributions towards India’s freedom and for sharing with the world a
doctrine for dealing with injustice and disharmony. He taught people the philosophy of Ahimsa, which
encourages the use of non-violence as a tool for the peaceful resolution of differences. India gained its
freedom on August 15, 1947, through Gandhi’s efforts. He was assassinated on January 30, 1948.

The United Nations General Assembly came up with a resolution in 2007 to establish the International Day
of Non-Violence. The day aimed to spread the message of non-violence, including through education and
public awareness, around the world. The resolution reflected universal respect for Gandhi and his
philosophy. October 2, which is Gandhi’s birthday, was allocated as the day’s date. The first International
Day of Non-Violence was on October 2, 2007.

On 2nd October 2009 Indian Postal Department issued one definitive postage stamp on Mahatma Gandhi
with a face value of Rs.25 along with relevant first day cover.

Information about the stamp : Ahimsa is a term meaning to do no harm (Non-Violence) . The word is
derived from the Sanskrit root hims - to strike; himsa is injury or harm, a-himsa is the antonym of this, i.e.
non harming or nonviolence.

Ahimsa (Non-Violence)is an important pillar of the Indian religions. Ahimsa means kindness and non-
violence towards all living things including animals; it respects living beings as a unity, the belief that all
living things are connected. Indian leader Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi strongly believed in this
principle.

Avoidance of verbal and physical violence is also a part of this principle, although ahimsa recognizes self-
defense when necessary, as a sign of a strong spirit.

I received this first day cover from a person to my address. This is scanned copy of the same cover which
came with my personal address.
