The involvement of multiple individuals in different capacities naturally evokes the question of who should be credited and held accountable for the research published, especially since careers, ethics, and scientific integrity are at stake. This article outlines the major concepts pertaining to authorship.

Through the course of your research, right until you get your your paper published, there will be several individuals who have contributed to your research project in different ways. However, not all of these individuals can be considered as authors of your paper. So who qualifies as an author on your manuscript? This slide deck will clarify who is an author, who does not qualify as an author of your paper and also three unethical authorship-related practices that you must avoid.

In the race to publish more papers, some researchers indulge in unethical practices, one of which is salami slicing. Salami slicing means fragmenting one study and publishing it in multiple papers. This practice is considered improper and can affect your career, besides being damaging to science. This SlideShare explains in detail what salami slicing is and why it is considered unethical. It also includes opinions of journal editors on the issue.

To take an overview about research paper publication

As a system for advancing knowledge, science requires that investigators share their findings with the rest of the scientific community. Only if one’s findings are made public can knowledge accumulate as researchers build on, extend, and refine one another’s work. As we discussed in Chapter 1, a defining characteristic of science is that, over the long haul, it is self-correcting; and self-correction can occur only if research findings are widely disseminated. To this end, informing others of the outcome of one’s work is a critical part of the research process. In this chapter we will examine how researchers distribute their work to other scientists, students, and the general public. Because the effective communication of one’s research nearly always involves writing, much of this chapter will be devoted to scientific writing. We will discuss criteria for good scientific writing and help you improve your own writing skills. We will also examine the guidelines that behavioral researchers use to prepare their research reports, a system of rules known as APA style. To begin, however, we’ll take a look at the three main routes by which behavioral scientists disseminate their research to others. HOW SCIENTIFIC FINDINGS ARE DISSEMINATED Researchers disseminate the results of their investigations among themselves in three ways: journal publications, presentations at professional meetings, and personal contact. Journal Publication Journal publication is the primary route by which research findings are disseminated to the scientific community. Scientific journals serve not only as a means of communication among researchers (most researchers subscribe to one or more journals in their fields) but also as the basis for the permanent storage of research findings in library collections. Traditionally, journals were published only in printed form, but today many journals are published in digital format as PDF files and on the Internet. Before most journals will publish a research paper, it must undergo the process of peer review. In peer review, a paper is evaluated by other scientists who have expertise in the topic under investigation. Although various journals use slightly different systems of peer review, the general process is as follows. 1. The author submits copies of his or her paper to the editor of a relevant journal. (The editor’s name and address typically appear on the inside front cover of the journal and on the journal’s Web site.) Although a few journals still ask authors to submit paper copies of their manuscripts, most journals have on-line systems by which authors submit their work by sending word processing files. Authors are permitted to submit a particular piece of work to only one journal at a time. 2. The editor (or an associate editor designated by the editor) then sends a copy of the paper to two or more peer reviewers who are known to be experts in the area of research covered in the paper. ...

Ethics in medical sciences research may not always translate into ethical publications. Ethical violations in conducting medical research always promote unethical scientific publications. Published research influences other researchers and establishes credibility for individual or journal.

Literature Review © 2017 Laureate Education, Inc. 1 Literature Review Program Transcript [MUSIC PLAYING] NARRATOR: Have you ever thought about a literature review as representing your intellectual heritage or intellectual genealogy? In his exploration of the purpose of a literature review, Dr. Patton explains this interesting perspective. He also points out common errors to avoid when undertaking a literature review. MICHAEL QUINN PATTON: One of the things that we do as scholar practitioners is look at the knowledge created by other people. And we draw on that knowledge as a way of positioning our own work and understanding where our contribution to knowledge, our own research, fits in that larger tradition. This is often referred to as the literature review. And the way that you go about knowing the knowledge that others have generated, that you're going to build on and contribute to, is to conduct a literature review. I tend not to like that terminology, because it sounds like the purpose is to review the literature. Literature review is actually a means to another end. And it's that end, it's that purpose of conducting the literature review that I want to focus on. The purpose is for you to understand your intellectual heritage, your intellectual genealogy. Anytime we undertake an inquiry into a particular issue, we are building on the knowledge of others. And we need to know what that knowledge is. It's part of our obligation as scholars, is to understand what work has come before us, what concepts we've inherited, what methods we've inherited, what measures we've inherited. Some of which we've adopted, some of which we've parted from. But we need to know that. Because at the end of a program of study, a master's degree, a program of doctoral inquiry, you're going to be expected to be able to locate your work within that tradition. And so it means that you need to be able to establish the people who formulated the basic distinctions that you're drawing on. Let me share with you some of the mistakes that I, from my point of view, find students engaging in when they undertake the literature review. One of these is to simply do an internet search to see how many articles they can find on a topic. Where they think that the game is how many citations you can come up with to show that you've done the literature review. This isn't a quantitative game. It's not something where the number of sources is important. It's the quality of those sources and your engagement with them, that you are able to engage with what other people have done and understand what's relevant, what's not relevant to your own area of inquiry. So that you're positioning yourself out of those traditions that others have engaged in. Literature Review © 2017 Laureate Education, Inc. 2 A second error is to think that the game is to position your work as unique. It is to try to find something that nobod ...

In BC’s nearly-decade-old “new” curriculum, the curricular competencies describe the processes that students are expected to develop in areas of learning such as mathematics. They reflect the “Do” in the “Know-Do-Understand” model. Under the “Communicating” header falls the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions.” Note that it contains two processes: “Explain mathematical ideas” and “Justify mathematical decisions.” I have broken it down into its separate parts in order to understand--or reveal--its meaning. The first part is commonplace in classrooms. By now, BC math teachers—and students—understand that “Explain mathematical ideas” means more than “Show your work.” Teachers consistently ask “What did you do?” and “How do you know?” This process is about retelling, not just of steps but of thinking. The second part happens less frequently. Think back to the last time that you observed a student make—a necessary precursor to justify—a mathematical decision. “Justify” is about defending. Like “explain,” it involves reasoning; unlike “explain,” it also involves opinion and debate. In order to reinterpret the curricular competency “Explain and justify mathematical ideas and decisions,” I will continue to take apart its constituent part “Justify mathematical decisions” and carefully examine the term “mathematical decisions.” What, exactly, is a “mathematical decision”? Below, I will categorize answers to this question. These categories, and the provided examples, may help to suggest new opportunities for students to justify.

This slide will show how to set domains for a field in odoo 17. Domain is mainly used to select records from the models. It is possible to limit the number of records shown in the field by applying domain to a field, i.e. add some conditions for selecting limited records.
