2. Welcome
WHAT CAN I say about our 15th Anniversary Celebrations? Only that it was an extremely enjoy-
able day from start to finish – past midnight! And no, our carriages did not turn into pumpkins and
there was no Prince Charming the next day, except our husbands of course.
Barbara Lewis and her husband arrived early for the Members’ meeting and were introduced to as
many members as possible, especially our President, Rita Turner, together with founding and long-
standing members. Her speech was enlightening for us all and a congratulatory card from the
National Executive Committee was opened by Rita and then taken to the Ball for all to see. (It's now
on the Notice Board for those members who were not able to be present in the evening.)
After the meeting several members of the Committee had a buffet lunch at Il Rosso with Barbara
and her husband before taking a rest to prepare for the evening celebrations. Karen Troop has
written a report in detail about the Crystal Ball on page 3.
The finale of the Ball, however, was a highlight as the singer sang “New York, New York”, which I
had requested earlier as it is one of my husband’s favourites. I didn't know at the time that Barbara
did, in fact, hail from Rochester in New York State, and so with a long line of us swinging our legs,
she then proceeded to conduct us all!
On taking her back to the hotel that evening, she told me how much she had enjoyed the day and
the Ball and intended to write to me when she returned from her river cruise in the Bordeaux area
(must be wine tasting!). The Tale of Two Cities came to mind:
“We met as friends and if we never meet again, I will consider myself well met!”
Hopefully, we will meet again – what a charming lady and a 'Mover and Shaker' too.
I mustn't close these notes without thanking everyone, committee and others, for everything they
did to help make the day so successful for Mansfield U3A and so enjoyable for our guest.
Moving on, I was very sorry to have missed the Picnic in the Park, which I hear was a great
success. David and Rita have written more about it on page 11.
Being the 17th June 2014 already, the Summer Solstice is only 4 days away – being officially
Midsummer and the longest day. I read that 'Solstice' actually means 'a stopping or standing still of
the Sun' and has been celebrated for thousands of years.
I hope some (or all) of the gentlemen enjoyed Father’s Day and that England are still in the World
Cup. Of course, it is the start of 'The Season', with Ascot, Wimbledon, Henley Regatta (one not to
be missed – the English at their very best) and other events throughout the country. Let’s hope for
some hot summer days with those balmy evenings! And no more rain!

spoke at our 15th Anniversary Meeting on 20th May.
"Today's members stand on your shoulders," she said, "and so do members of
many other Nottinghamshire U3As who owe a debt to Mansfield for helping U3As to
become established in Ashfield, Mansfield Woodhouse, Hucknall and Rainworth,"
she added.
She's shown above applauding, l to r: Max Clarke (Chairman, 2010/11), Mike Allen
(2011/13), current Chairman Glenis Carr, Rita Turner (Honorary President &
Chairman of the North Nottinghamshire Neighbourhood Group of U3As) and Norma
Shillinglaw (2005/6). She also presented Glenis with a congratulations card on
behalf of the U3A National Executive Committee and accepted a bottle of Cham-
pagne from her on behalf of our committee in thanks for her support.
There are now 24 U3As in the Nottinghamshire U3A County Network, since the
launch of Eastwood U3A on 4th June. "This record of helping retired people to enjoy
the pleasures of their Third Age by learning new things, sharing interests and
making new friends is something many other U3As around the country would do
well to emulate", Barbara said, "and I hope many will learn more by visiting Mans-
field and District U3A's superb website."

Crystal Celebration Ball
WOW, where do I
begin?
Well it all started a while
back when we realised
that May 2014 was
Mansfield U3A’s fifteenth
year and we 'orta 'ave a
bitova do'. So we did.
This idea grew into the
idea of us of organising a Ball and inviting Ashfield, Hucknall and Sherwood to join us.

4. I could tell you about all the committee meetings, phone calls, e-mails and even sleepless nights to
achieve this event but I won’t! Instead I’d like to share some of the highlights that for me made the
evening so memorable:
The room wasn't ready when we looked in to 'dress the tables' etc, (in fact some tablecloths hadn't
even arrived!) but it looked a picture when everyone started to arrive at 6pm.
The flowers, balloons, raffle, favours, film show, singer, buffet, dresses, suits ...
That first gin and tonic to settle the nerves!

The art of filling up our plates without spilling any is not dead!

Sylvia and Colin having a dance; in fact the dance floor was often full.

I can’t do it all justice but we were all 'Cinderellas' and 'Prince Charmings'. And we did go to

Holiday Updates
LAKESIDE HOLIDAY VILLAGE, Hayling Island (23rd - 27th June.)
Only a few days to go before we'll be on our way to the South coast for 5 days. As usual, please
remember to bring your packs with coach plans, itineraries and maps of various places. See you all
at Walkden Street no later than 8.15am. (I still have a waiting list in case of cancellation should any
one fancy a holiday down south. Depending on whose place you would be taking the cost would be
£273 for no upgrade, £283 with upgrade twin or double room and £293 single upgrade.)
THE ALGARVE, PORTUGAL (18th - 25th Sept.)
All cheques and passport forms have been received by the travel firm. Please remember the pre-
holiday meeting at the Junction (Cardinal) in Sutton in Ashfield at 11am on Saturday 30th August.
You will have the chance to ask any questions which may arise after reading the information in your
packs. These will be given out no later than the July meeting. It may be an idea to buy your Euros
now as they are of good value at the moment. Remember pensioners can get a good discount at
Ilkeston Coop Travel. HIC card (automated service 0300 330 1350). Have your card with you if you
are renewing – you can use the same number if you have never had an EHIC card.
THURSFORD (3rd - 5th Dec.)
Since cheques will not be cashed until the end-of-September deadline, you may like to pay the
£160 balance before then, especially if you know you will be away for the September meeting.

5. Key to Meetings details:
THIS TABLE SHOWS THE DAY of the month, time and frequency using the first two letters of the
day, followed by numbers 1 - 5 to represent the week number. The final letter M (or F, W or V) indic-
ates that the group meets monthly, fortnightly, weekly or at variable intervals.
So 'Tu2, 2.30 - V M' would mean a group meeting on the 2nd Tuesday at 2.30pm Monthly but with
Variable finish times.
The main Mansfield and District U3Ameetings are on the 3rd Tuesday of each month (exceptAugust

9. Coffee Morning
OUR ANNUAL coffee morning on 9th May was held once again at The Towers on Botany Avenue
and over 100 members attended. They took the opportunity to relax and chat with fellow members
and at the same time managed to raise almost £600 towards our funds! (£592 to be exact).
A wonderful result in the month in which we celebrate our 15th anniversary.
Successful events like this don’t just happen! Our thanks to everyone who worked so hard and
gave their time so cheerfully on the day.
Cakes and pies from the Pudding Club sold like hot cakes, seeds and plants from the Gardening
Group were carried away by members eager to get out in the fresh air. The Social Committee had
organised the raffle and the tombola stalls with an amazing array of prizes.
Thank-you to everyone concerned – those members who baked pies and cakes, grew and potted
plants and stood and sold tickets, and to all members who kindly donated prizes and gifts. Special
thanks to the Social Committee for organising the whole thing and making sure we had biscuits with
the coffee.
Finally thanks to all those members who came along and made the whole event so enjoyable, and
gave so generously.

Twelve members met on 21st May with everyone working on their own project and will tackle
'Summer' on 18th June – probably with much of our usual banter.

VISIT TO THEATRE ROYAL TO SEE SISTER ACT ON 29TH MAY.
Wow, it was Fantastic! It was performed by the Carlton Operatic Society. A large cast with
fabulous costumes, wonderful scenery, brilliant acting & dancing & so amusing. The main
lead was easily as good as Whoopi Goldberg!
The audience stood for around 20mins at the end just applauding them so you know how
excellent it was! What a shame if you missed it! Next year perhaps?

10. Digital World
OUR PHOTOGRAPHIC walkabout on the Pleasley Trail on 23rd May presented many opportun-
ities. Some members' explorations were wide-ranging in the neighbouring parkland; others concen-
trated on the inside of the poorly-lit museum and shared tips about the use of flash.
We'll discuss the results at Stanton Hill Baptist Church at 2.00 on 13th June and also decide where
members want to go on 27th June.
You'll be very welcome to join us on any trip, when you could follow your instincts or accompany an
experienced member if you'd like tips. (It doesn't matter if you just use a simple point-and-shoot or a
complex DSLR.)

Luncheon Club
OUR MAY 15th Anniversary Lunch, arranged by Norma Shillinglaw at The Hostess at Sook-
holme brought back many memories when Norma spoke of our early days under Edith Senior's
leadership, the steps forward that Hillary Hamilton-Ross introduced and welcomed the way
members are now taking it in turns to help run the group by arranging lunches.
Our next lunch, on 19th June, will be hosted by Margaret Burlinson and Sheila Whalley, who have
combined to arrange for us to visit a delightful Derbyshire pub, The White Horse at Woolley Moor,
on 19th June. But only two spaces remained at the time of writing. (First come …!) Two courses will
be offered at £13 and three for £16.
Our July lunch, on the 17th will be the last before our summer break and will be at The Crown,
Rolleston, a favourite country pub of Karen and John Troop's close to Southwell Racecourse and
riverside walks. They have arranged an attractive menu offering 2 courses for £12.95 and 3 courses
for £15.50.

11. North Notts Neighbourhood Group Picnic in the Park …
NOBODY said we
could only picnic in
blazing sunshine
and a heatwave
so we didn't let a
cold drizzle spoil
another triumph
for Rita Turner and
the North Notts
Neighbourhood
Group of U3As at
Rufford Park.
"If you've got friends and neighbours then the world is a happier place", goes the song, and the
NNNG's fourth Picnic in the Park proved it. This year all the entertainment was provided by U3A
members. Ten U3As took part and sang, dined and danced in the Rufford marquee as the rain
came down outside
Highlights for me were the display by Retford U3A's photographic group (memo to self, "must try
harder") and Ashfield U3A's interpretation of 'picnic' to mean a full-scale buffet, complete with tables,
chairs, wine and too many gastronomic delights to mention. 'De Luxe' seems inadequate.
Our display was masterminded by Mike Allen, with the help of Group Leaders who dredged through
old photo albums to find historic shots that I could digitise and upload to our photo albums so that he
could get professional prints on-line.

… And something about the North Notts Neighbourhood Group
OUR WONDERFUL Mansfield U3A birthday celebration has set me thinking.
The NNNGroup 2014 Picnic in the Park actually celebrates this group’s 7th birthday. It
began in 2007 with a local one-off celebration of the 25th birthday of the arrival of the U3A
movement in the UK from its birthplace in France.
Our first event was a very experimental picnic in Rufford Country Park and was a great
success. It was thought to be a good idea so we stayed in touch and the number of neigh-
bours has gradually increased to nine. We are a relatively informal group but one of our
main aims has always been to share interest groups wherever there are spaces.
This works well and helps with minority interest groups and also with our choir, holidays and outings
that are only possible when we co-operate.
During our seven years we have organised a summer lunch, a summer celebration evening,
four picnics in the park and, two years ago, our ‘famous’ Jubilee Jamboree at the John
Fretwell Sports Centre. (I can say 'famous' because it had a write-up in the U3A national
magazine and David’s photograph has also appeared again in a more recent article and
features on the front of the national promotional leaflet.)
Not bad for a few neighbours getting together to enjoy life!

Malcolm Pullan. It is with deep regret that we have learned that Malcolm passed-away on 26th

Malcolm Osborne. It is with deep regret that we have learned that Malcolm, our founder secretary,
passed-away on 12th May after a long illness. His funeral was on 28th May.
Our thoughts are with Jill and Diana at this sad time.

Book Table Report: June 2014.
SALE of books in May raised £45.70. Most of the sales occur before the meeting is called to
order at 10ish. Books are handed in when people arrive and so if you have had a look round
before the meeting, there may be books on the stall which you have not seen by the time
you get your coffee. If you come straight to the Book Stall before collecting your coffee the
queue for coffee will probably be shorter and you get first pick of the biscuits!

TV celebrities for over 30 years, Oprah Winfrey included. His interviews and columns have been
