Space Mission to Mars. Let’s go directly to Mission Control on Hope Island in the South Pacific …
REPORTER 1: Yes, you are joining us at an incredibly exciting
moment. In a few moments we are going to see the first images
of a human being on the surface of the Red Planet. The three
astronauts are going to land their module in two minutes.
Then, they are going to get out of the module and that will be
a historic moment for humanity …
REPORTER 2: Yes, but before they do that they are going to say a few
words to us from inside the module. Astronauts, can you hear us?
ASTRONAUT 1: Yes, Earth, we can hear you!
R2: That’s fantastic! Tell us, quickly, before you go out onto the planet’s surface, what you think
it will be like out there.
ASTRONAUT 2: Well, we know that it’s amazingly cold out here on Mars, and that’s because there’s
no atmosphere, so the heat of the Sun just disappears. And because there’s no atmosphere, it will be
quite difficult to breathe! Ha-ha! But, no, we’ll be okay because of our spacesuits.

A1: Well, our spacesuits are amazing. They’ll give us enough air to breathe and protect us from

1 What do you usually do in your summer holidays? A lot of teenagers in the USA go to summer camps
for a few weeks every year. Until recently, there were very few summer camps in the UK but now the
number is growing. Prices range from €300–€600 a week. This includes seven nights of accommodation
with all meals and most activities. Accommodation is usually in shared dormitories.
2 The camps provide activities such as mountain-biking, abseiling, kayaking, water-skiing, scuba diving,
fencing, sailing and climbing. For those who are not so keen on sport, there are plenty of alternatives.
At some camps you can learn about film-making — writing a script and filming on location. At least one
camp will let you try DJ-ing — mixing and sampling to create your own CD. And that’s not all. You can learn
to drive, do motor maintenance, design a web-site, and develop your acting skills by taking part in a play.
3 Many of the camps are situated in attractive areas near the sea or in the countryside. Some are modern
buildings but others are interesting old houses or even castles. And you don’t have to stay in camp all the
time. There are often organised excursions to places of interest such as safari parks and nature reserves.
4 People who go to a summer camp often repeat the experience. Sarah, 15, says, ‘You never get bored.
There’s always something to do and every day is different. I’ve made lots of new friends too. I can’t wait
to go back again next year.’
