woman. Why did she change her name?
b When she was young she read all the time.

d Well, it was very unusual for women to be educated at all in those days. Most girls never went
to school, and it was very difficult for women to be writers. So, she used a man’s name and
became one of the best writers, male or female, of all time.
e Her favourite brother was Isaac. In one of her novels, she wrote about a brother and sister who
are a lot like her and Isaac.
f Her father died in 1849, and she went to London, where she made lots of friends who told her
she should be a writer. She started writing short stories and then her first novel, Adam Bede,
       which was a great success.

George Eliot was an English novelist in the nineteenth century — but this George was not a man! George Eliot was a woman! Her real name was Mary Ann Evans. This is the story of her life … a All her other books were successful, too. The most famous are The Mill on the Floss, Silas Marner and the book some people think is the best in the English language, Middlemarch. George Eliot is a famous writer. But not everybody knows she was a woman. Why did she change her name? b When she was young she read all the time. She never stopped reading and educating herself. She learned German and Italian, too. c She was born in 1819 in Warwickshire, England. She was the youngest of five children. She had two brothers and two sisters. 1 d Well, it was very unusual for women to be educated at all in those days. Most girls never went to school, and it was very difficult for women to be writers. So, she used a man’s name and became one of the best writers, male or female, of all time. e Her favourite brother was Isaac. In one of her novels, she wrote about a brother and sister who are a lot like her and Isaac. f Her father died in 1849, and she went to London, where she made lots of friends who told her she should be a writer. She started writing short stories and then her first novel, Adam Bede, which was a great success. 2 Now put the novels of George Eliot 3 Complete this form with information in the correct order. about George Eliot. a The Mill on the Floss – the next after ______ Adam Bede Year of her birth: ___ 1819 __________ b Middlemarch – 1872 Place of birth: _________ ___________ c Silas Marner – eleven years before Family name: _________ ______ Middlemarch t her family: _________ Other information abou ________ _____________________ d Adam Bede – her first novel 1 _____________________ ________ n: __________________ George Eliot’s professio about George Eliot: Interesting information _________ _____________________ _____________________ 20 © Richmond Publishing, 2004 PHOTOCOPIABLE
