3. Matthew 24:32, The Fig Tree
• Matthew 24:32 "Now learn
the parable from the fig
tree: when its branch has
already become tender and
puts forth its leaves, you
know that summer is near;
33 so, you too, when you
see all these things,
recognize that He is near,
right at the door.

5. Matthew 24:32, The Fig Tree
• Hosea 9:10 I found Israel like grapes in the wilderness; I
saw your forefathers as the earliest fruit on the fig tree
in its first season…
• Joel 1:6 For a nation has invaded my land… 7 It has
made my vine a waste And my fig tree splinters. It has
stripped them bare and cast them away; Their
branches have become white.
• Mark 13:27 "And then He …will gather together His
elect … 28 "Now learn the parable from the fig tree…
• Micah 7:1 Woe is me! For I am Like the fruit pickers,
like the grape gatherers. There is not a cluster of grapes
to eat, Or a first-ripe fig which I crave. 2 The godly
person has perished from the land, And there is no
upright person among men….
6. Matthew 24:34, “this generation”
• In Matt 24:32-35 Jesus gives the “lesson from the fig tree”
indicating that when all these signs are appearing, then His
coming is at hand. The problem in this passage is the
meaning of “this generation” Matt 24:34. It hinges on the
meaning of the Greek word, genea, Meaning: race, family,
generation. Strong’s provides four possible meanings for
this word has #1 men of the same stock, or successive
members of a genealogy , #2 a family, #3 the whole
multitude of men living at the same time, #4 an age, a
space of 30 - 33 years. The interpreters duty here is to
determine from the context if the meaning of genea is,
race, family, or generation? Some see this as the generation
who watched and heard Jesus, others as the generation
that shall see all this come to pass,
7. • Dr. Ryrie, Dr. David Hocking, myself and others see this not
in the immediate context of the surrounding sentences, but
in the context of the sermon. The last time Jesus used this
word was preceding this sermon in Matt 23:29-36 when He
charged “this generation” genea with the blood of all the
prophets from Able on. Then in Matt 23:36 Jesus says, “I
tell you the truth, all this will come upon this generation.”
He said “all this,” you have to ask “All what?” is going to
come on this genea. Well the next thing He teaches is the
Olivet Discourse. After explaining the Great Tribulation will
come upon Israel, He then promises that this genea “will
not pass away.” The Great Tribulation will not extinct Israel,
the sons of Jacob will survive. Dr. Ryrie says in his notes on
Matt. 24:34, “No one living when Jesus spoke these words
lived to see “all these things” come to pass. However, the
Greek word can mean “race” or “family,” which makes good
sense here; i.e. the Jewish race will be preserved, in spite of
terrible persecution, until the Lord comes.”
8. Matthew 24:34, “this generation”
Keep checking the context; Jesus said in;
Matthew 24:21 "For then there will be a great
tribulation, such as has not occurred since the
beginning of the world until now, nor ever
will.” This rules out 70AD, and 135AD, because
they were followed by WW2, and the
holocaust. And that will be followed by the
great tribulation when “this generation” will
suffer;
9. “this genea” Is The 1/3 left, Zech 13:8
• Zechariah 13:7 "Awake, O sword, against My Shepherd,
And against the man, My Associate," Declares the LORD of
hosts. "Strike the Shepherd that the sheep may be
scattered; And I will turn My hand against the little ones. 8
"It will come about in all the land," Declares the LORD,
"That two parts in it will be cut off and perish; But the
third will be left in it. 9 "And I will bring the third part
through the fire [the great tribulation], Refine them as silver is
refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on
My name [Matthew 23:39 "For I say to you, from now on you will not see Me until you
say, 'BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD!'"], And I will answer
them; I will say, 'They are My people,' And they will say,
'The LORD is my God.'"
• The “My hand against the little ones” time has been 1900
yrs, the 2/3 &1/3 time to “Refine, test them” is “the time of
Jacob's trouble” (KJV Jeremiah 30:7).
11. Matthew 24:34, “genea” In the LXX

other in endowments, pursuits, character 2b1) esp. in a
bad sense, a perverse race 3) the whole multitude of men
living at the same time 4) an age (i.e. the time ordinarily

13. Matthew 23:35, The Son Will Not Bear The
Punishment For The Father's Iniquity
• Matthew 23:35 so that upon you may fall the guilt of all the
righteous blood shed on earth, from the blood of righteous
Abel to the blood of Zechariah, the son of Berechiah, whom
you [this a “generic you,” of 500 years earlier] murdered between the temple
and the altar. 36 "Truly I say to you, all these things will
come upon this generation [this “genea”] .
• Ezekiel 18:20 "The person who sins will die. The son will
not bear the punishment for the father's iniquity, nor will
the father bear the punishment for the son's iniquity; the
righteousness of the righteous will be upon himself, and
the wickedness of the wicked will be upon himself.
• Jesus could not have meant the ones living at that time, but
the bloodline of Jacob. The “genea” Israel. The context
demands it; Matthew 23:30, 23:32 (our/your fathers)

16. Matthew 24:34, Disciples Devastated
• I think they “got it,” that Judaism was in for big trouble, He
had just given 7 “woes” to the leaders, just after;

pieces; but on whomever it falls, it will scatter him like
dust." 45 When the chief priests and the Pharisees heard His
parables, they understood that He was speaking about
them.
• The disciples had to be wondering, “If, the kingdom of God
will be taken away, our leaders are condemned, and the
temple is going down, what about the Jews?”
• Jesus lovingly gave them the assurance in 24:34 so they
could know that “Israel” would not pass away.

And His resting place will be glorious. 11 Then it will happen
on that day that the Lord Will again recover the second
time with His hand The remnant of His people, who will
remain, From Assyria, Egypt, Pathros, Cush, Elam, Shinar,
Hamath, And from the islands of the sea. 12 And He will lift
up a standard for the nations And assemble the banished
ones of Israel, And will gather the dispersed of Judah From

His wrath on “the bride of Christ” whom He justified,

for? Would the Spirit pour out His wrath on the one He

38. Matthew 24:4,24, False Teachers In The Church
• The Demise of Biblical Discernment
• T. A. McMahon
•
• In last month's issue of this newsletter we exhorted our readers to discipline themselves to read the Word of God daily. The emphasis was on developing a habit, the best and most
necessary habit--one that every believer should have. Of course, we encouraged reading the Bible as a basis for living one's life by what it teaches, which is the only way that one who is
born again spiritually can mature in the faith. Yet, here is the simple truth that too many Christians have missed: if we don't read God's Word for ourselves, we can't truly know its
instructions. If we don't know God's instructions, we can't follow Him, and we therefore can't do what pleases Him. Tragically, many if not most Christians haven't considered that simple
truth. Their spiritual beliefs tend to be a collection of things they've heard (sermons, radio, TV, books, movies, etc.) mixed with what they may or may not have gotten from the Bible.
They have been spoon-fed rather than getting their spiritual meals directly from God's Word.
•
• Why is that tragic? Wouldn't it be of value to get input from the various Christian media regarding the teachings of our Lord? Hasn't our Lord gifted teachers to help believers better
understand His Word? Certainly, but if that is our primary feeding of God's Word, it leads to a spiritual anemia at best and makes us defenseless against spiritual deception at worst. How
can a believer tell the difference between a good teacher and a false teacher? Although Scripture tells us that God gave some to be teachers (Ephesians 4:11), His Word also tells us,
"There shall be false teachers among you, who privily shall bring in damnable heresies" (2 Peter 2:1). So how can we know what's what and who's who?
•
• Most Christians are not asking such questions--nor do they seem to be concerned about the consequences related to a lack of biblical discernment. The second chapter of Hebrews
begins with a warning that we could drift away from the Scriptures and find ourselves going along with something that seems biblical but is not. More and more frequently these days, I
hear confessing and professing Christians excusing themselves and others for their unbiblical beliefs and practices by declaring that they all nevertheless "love Jesus." What Jesus might
that be? Is it the biblical Jesus--the One who declares that He is "the way, the truth, and the life"? Is it the Word incarnate, who challenges everyone who professes to be a believer in Him
by asking: "And why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?" (Luke 6:46). Would our reply be, "Sorry, Lord, I wasn't aware of most of the things that you said"? If that's
the case, having "the mind of Christ" (1 Corinthians 2:16) is a wishful delusion.
•
• Just so there is no misunderstanding, the heart of this article is a concern for the fruitfulness of everyone who truly knows the biblical Jesus, everyone who has by faith alone put his or her
trust in Christ as Savior, the One, the only One, who could (and did) pay the full penalty for the sins of mankind. For those who have put their faith in Him and have received His gift of
eternal life, what follows is their life in Christ, which is all about living a godly and productive life. Jesus said, "I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more
abundantly" (John 10:10). A believer's fruitfulness not only greatly enriches his own life, but his new life in Christ becomes a testimony, a witness to the truth of the gospel that changed
his life, so that others may be drawn to Jesus. Yet a believer's life in Christ will be spiritually futile if he (or she) doesn't really know what Jesus taught.
•
• An unproductive life in Christ is bad enough, but it can go far beyond just being spiritually feeble. Not knowing the Word of God sets one up for being spiritually deceived. Again, it should
be rather obvious: if we don't know what the Bible says, we can't discern what is true to it and what is contrary to it. Consequently, a person who is ignorant of the Scriptures is ripe for
being led away from God's truth. When such a condition becomes epidemic among Christians, they become collective pawns of God's adversary, Satan, and participants in the apostasy
as well as unwitting contributors to the emerging religion of the Antichrist (Revelation 13). But could such a thing happen?
•
• Both Dave Hunt and I have been observing trends in the evangelical church for 35 years. In those three and a half decades significant developments have taken place, all of which have
greatly undermined the belief in and dependence upon the Scriptures. We have documented such developments in the twenty years of TBC's existence and five years prior to that in The
Seduction of Christianity. In past articles we have shown from God's Word that Satan's primary strategy as the deceiver of mankind is reflected in his initial statement to Eve in the Garden
of Eden, a tactic calculated to weaken her trust in God's Word by questioning it: "Yea, hath God said...?" (Genesis 3:1). Down through history, he has expanded his assault on the Word
beyond planting seeds of doubt to distorting, denigrating, corrupting, compromising, and outright lying about the Scriptures. In the last 30 years, some of his most effective devices have
seduced Christians away from the written Word of God, replacing it with subjective and experiential content (feelings-oriented beliefs). Briefly (see our archives for more extensive
writings on these subjects and others), that drift has been a major contributor to the demise of biblical discernment.
•
• For example, the false teaching known as Rhema vs. Logos says that God speaks today to believers with the same or even greater authority than is found in the Bible. For decades this
doctrine has led millions of Charismatic and Pentecostal believers away from the objective, written Word of God.
•
• The subjective pseudoscience of Christian psychology, with its goal of integrating psychology with the Bible (primarily through psychological counseling), has infected the conservative
evangelical church with the humanistic doctrines of self-love and self-esteem. Even more damaging, it has all but eliminated the belief in the sufficiency of the Scriptures for multitudes of
Christians.

• BRAIN STOPPER NO. 3: "WHAT FALSE PROPHETS?" WHAT DO YOU GET WHEN YOU LET A FOX GUARD A HEN HOUSE? [Excerpts]
•
• Dead chickens. You may wonder what this old proverb has to do with the New Apostolic Reformation (NAR) movement. Unfortunately -- a lot. Let me explain.
• In my last post, I pointed out the repeated warnings in the Bible about false prophets. The message is clear: There will be false prophets in the church, and there will be lots of them. So
be on guard.
•
• You would think that, given these warnings, Christians would be on high alert for false prophets. Sadly, this is not the case. Even those churches that talk the most about prophets and the
gift of prophecy -- the Pentecostal and charismatic churches -- say very little about the need for discerning false prophets.
•
• And what's worse: many of the prophets in the NAR movement are actually telling their followers that they don't need to worry about false prophets.
•
• Imagine that!
•
• Why don't people need to worry about false prophets? Their answer: Because there just aren't that many false prophets around. The following comment, from influential NAR prophet
Bill Hamon, is typical:
•
• "Despite the occasional false prophet we encounter, we should not let the counterfeit keep us from receiving the genuine....The percentage of false prophets is certainly much lower than
the devil would have us believe. Out of the 600 pages of personal prophecy I have received over the years, only two were absolutely false, and perhaps were a person's own opinion
rather than God's word to me. But I am more than willing to put up with the fraction of a percent that are bad in order to receive the overwhelming majority that are God-inspired."
(Prophets and Personal Prophecy, 128). Pay close attention to Hamon's words. He says false prophets' appearances in the church are only "occasional," and that the percentage of false
prophecies given is only a "fraction of a percent."
•
• Wow. There is a marked difference between Hamon's careless dismissal of the possibility of false prophets in contrast to the sober words of Jesus and the apostles.
• Why would any church leader -- and especially one who calls himself a prophet --attempt to downplay the threat of false prophets? If Hamon were a true prophet, then he would honor
God's Word -- not dishonor it by contradicting its teachings about false prophets.
•
• And a true prophet would show more concern for God's people by warning them about the serious threat posed by false prophets.
•

• Roberta Potts Interview: Timing of the Rapture
• Posted: 09 Oct 2012 06:59 AM PDT
• By Dr. David R. Reagan
• When will the Rapture occur?
• Dr. Reagan: This is the fifth and last part of a series where I interview Roberta Roberts Potts
concerning various topics related to Bible prophecy.
• Dr. Reagan: Let me ask you another question. This is a hotly debated one concerning the
timing of the Rapture. There are a lot of people who believe in a Rapture, many don't, but
many do. They will debate the timing of the Rapture, whether it is going to happen near the
end of the Tribulation, or before it begins, or even in the middle? Do you have any opinion
about the timing of the Rapture? We both know the Bible doesn't clearly say when the
Rapture is going to occur. You have to pretty much figure it out, deducing when from what
the Bible says. So, what is your opinion?
• Roberta Potts: I believe we are going to escape God's coming wrath. One reason I believe that
is because Jesus picked two particular Bible personalities when He said the end times are
going to be like the days of... Noah and Lot. Both these guys lived centuries apart. The only
thing I know they really had in common was that they both faced a coming cataclysm and
they both escaped.
43. • In Matt 24:32-35 Jesus gives the “lesson from the fig tree” indicating that when all these signs are
appearing, then His coming is at hand. The problem in this passage is the meaning of “this
generation” Matt 24:34. It hinges on the meaning of the Greek word genea, genea, Meaning: race,
family, generation. Strong’s provides four possible meanings for this word has #1 men of the same
stock, or successive members of a genealogy , #2 a family, #3 the whole multitude of men living at
the same time, #4 an age, a space of 30 - 33 years. The interpreters duty here is to determine from
the context if the meaning of genea is, race, family, generation. Some see this as the generation
who watched and heard Jesus, others as the generation that shall see all this come to pass,
•
• Dr. Ryrie, Dr. David Hocking, myself and others see this not in the immediate context of the
surrounding sentences, but in the context of the sermon. The last time Jesus used this word was
preceding this sermon in Matt 23:29-36 when He charged “this generation” genea with the blood
of all the prophets from Able on. Then in Matt 23:36 Jesus says, “I tell you the truth, all this will
come upon this generation.” He said “all this,” you have to ask “All what?” is going to come on this
genea. Well the next thing He teaches is the Olivet Discourse. After explaining the Great Tribulation
will come upon Israel, He then promises that this genea “will not pass away.” The Great Tribulation
will not extinct Israel, the sons of Jacob will survive. Dr. Ryrie says in his notes on Matt. 24:34, “No
one living when Jesus spoke these words lived to see “all these things” come to pass. However, the
Greek word can mean “race” or “family,” which makes good sense here; i.e. the Jewish race will be
preserved, in spite of terrible persecution, until the Lord comes.”

• Question: "What is the Tribulation? How do we know the Tribulation will last seven years?"
Answer: The tribulation is a future seven-year period of time when God will finish His discipline of Israel and finalize His judgment of the unbelieving world. The church, made up of all
who have trusted in the person and work of the Lord Jesus to save them from being punished for sin, will not be present during the tribulation. The church will be removed from the earth
in an event known as the rapture (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18; 1 Corinthians 15:51-53). The church is saved from the wrath to come (1 Thessalonians 5:9). Throughout Scripture, the
tribulation is referred to by other names such as the Day of the Lord (Isaiah 2:12; 13:6-9; Joel 1:15; 2:1-31; 3:14; 1 Thessalonians 5:2); trouble or tribulation (Deuteronomy 4:30; Zephaniah
1:1); the great tribulation, which refers to the more intense second half of the seven-year period (Matthew 24:21); time or day of trouble (Daniel 12:1; Zephaniah 1:15); time of Jacob's
trouble (Jeremiah 30:7).
An understanding of Daniel 9:24-27 is necessary in order to understand the purpose and time of the tribulation. This passage speaks of 70 weeks that have been declared against “your
people.” Daniel's people are the Jews, the nation of Israel, and Daniel 9:24 speaks of a period of time that God has given “to finish transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for
wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy.” God declares that “seventy sevens” will fulfill all these things. This is 70
sevens of years, or 490 years. (Some translations refer to 70 weeks of years.) This is confirmed by another part of this passage in Daniel. In verses 25 and 26, Daniel is told that the
Messiah will be cut off after “seven sevens and sixty-two sevens” (69 total), beginning with the decree to rebuild Jerusalem. In other words, 69 sevens of years (483 years) after the
decree to rebuild Jerusalem, the Messiah will be cut off. Biblical historians confirm that 483 years passed from the time of the decree to rebuild Jerusalem to the time when Jesus was
crucified. Most Christian scholars, regardless of their view of eschatology (future things/events), have the above understanding of Daniel's 70 sevens.
With 483 years having passed from the decree to rebuild Jerusalem to the cutting off of the Messiah, this leaves one seven-year period to be fulfilled in terms of Daniel 9:24: “to finish
transgression, to put an end to sin, to atone for wickedness, to bring in everlasting righteousness, to seal up vision and prophecy and to anoint the most holy.” This final seven-year period
is known as the tribulation period—it is a time when God finishes judging Israel for its sin.
Daniel 9:27 gives a few highlights of the seven-year tribulation period: “He will confirm a covenant with many for one 'seven.' In the middle of the 'seven' he will put an end to sacrifice
and offering. And on a wing of the temple he will set up an abomination that causes desolation, until the end that is decreed is poured out on him.” The person of whom this verse speaks
is the person Jesus calls the “abomination that causes desolation” (Matthew 24:15) and is called “the beast” in Revelation 13. Daniel 9:27 says that the beast will make a covenant for
seven years, but in the middle of this week (3 1/2 years into the tribulation), he will break the covenant, putting a stop to sacrifice. Revelation 13 explains that the beast will place an
image of himself in the temple and require the world to worship him. Revelation 13:5 says that this will go on for 42 months, which is 3 1/2 years. Since Daniel 9:27 says that this will
happen in the middle of the week, and Revelation 13:5 says that the beast will do this for a period of 42 months, it is easy to see that the total length of time is 84 months or seven years.
Also see Daniel 7:25, where the “time, times, and half a time” (time=1 year; times=2 years; half a time=1/2 year; total of 3 1/2 years) also refers to “great tribulation,” the last half of the
seven-year tribulation period when the beast will be in power.
For further references about the tribulation, see Revelation 11:2-3, which speaks of 1260 days and 42 months, and Daniel 12:11-12, which speaks of 1290 days and 1335 days. These days
have a reference to the midpoint of the tribulation. The additional days in Daniel 12 may include the time at the end for the judgment of the nations (Matthew 25:31-46) and time for the
setting up of Christ's millennial kingdom (Revelation 20:4-6).
In summary, the Tribulation is the 7-year time period in the end times in which humanity's decadence and depravity will reach its fullness, with God judging accordingly.

Timothy 3:2 Jeremiah 35:18-19 Ephesians 6:1-3
Exodus 20:12, Honor Father And Mother
• Question: "What does it mean to honor my father and mother?"
Answer: Honoring your father and mother is being respectful in word and action and having an inward attitude of esteem for their position. The Greek word for honor means “to revere,
prize, and value.” Honor is giving respect not only for merit but also for rank. For example, some Americans may disagree with the President’s decisions, but they should still respect his
position as leader of their country. Similarly, children of all ages should honor their parents, regardless of whether or not their parents “deserve” honor.
God exhorts us to honor father and mother. He values honoring parents enough to include it in the Ten Commandments (Exodus 20:12) and again in the New Testament: “Children, obey
your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may be well with you, and that you may live long on the
earth” (Ephesians 6:1-3). Honoring parents is the only command in Scripture that promises long life as a reward. Those who honor their parents are blessed (Jeremiah 35:18-19). In
contrast, those with a “depraved mind” and those who exhibit ungodliness in the last days are characterized by disobedience to parents (Romans 1:30; 2 Timothy 3:2).
Solomon, the wisest man, urged children to respect their parents (Proverbs 1:8; 13:1; 30:17). Although we may no longer be directly under their authority, we cannot outgrow God’s
command to honor our parents. Even Jesus, God the Son, submitted Himself to both His earthly parents (Luke 2:51) and His heavenly Father (Matthew 26:39). Following Christ’s example,
we should treat our parents the way we would reverentially approach our heavenly Father (Hebrews 12:9; Malachi 1:6).
Obviously, we are commanded to honor our parents, but how? Honor them with both actions and attitudes (Mark 7:6). Honor their unspoken as well as spoken wishes. “A wise son heeds
his father's instruction, but a mocker does not listen to rebuke” (Proverbs 13:1). In Matthew 15:3-9, Jesus reminded the Pharisees of the command of God to honor their father and
mother. They were obeying the letter of the law, but they had added their own traditions that essentially overruled it. While they honored their parents in word, their actions proved
their real motive. Honor is more than lip service. The word “honor” in this passage is a verb and, as such, demands a right action.
We should seek to honor our parents in much the same way that we strive to bring glory to God—in our thoughts, words, and actions. For a young child, obeying parents goes hand in
hand with honoring them. That includes listening, heeding, and submitting to their authority. After children mature, the obedience that they learned as children will serve them well in
honoring other authorities such as government, police, and employers.
While we are required to honor parents, that doesn’t include imitating ungodly ones (Ezekiel 20:18-19). If a parent ever instructs a child to do something that clearly contradicts God’s
commands, that child must obey God rather than his/her parents (Acts 5:29).
Honor begets honor. God will not honor those who will not obey His command to honor their parents. If we desire to please God and be blessed, we should honor our parents. Honoring
is not easy, is not always fun, and certainly is not possible in our own strength. But honor is a certain path to our purpose in life—glorifying God. “Children, obey your parents in
everything, for this pleases the Lord” (Colossians 3:20).
