September 2010, Direct Dimensions traveled to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond, Virginia to 3D laser scan the Caligula statue. The scanning took a full day using the FARO Platinum Arm, the Faro Laser Scanner, and PolyWorks software. Direct Dimensions then converted this raw point cloud data into a super high resolution watertight polygon mesh model for subsequent analysis.

3. The 3D data captured was pieced together and converted into one single 3D digital model that serves as an extremely accurate digital archive of the priceless sculpture. This high resolution 3D model would become the starting point for a complete digital restoration of the sculpture. 4. Meeting of the Minds Direct Dimensions’ Jason Page (2 nd row far left) worked with a team of experts in art history, world heritage and conservation from the University of Virginia, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Virginia Museum of Fine Art, Emory University, and the University of Florence. The team provided specific direction and reference materials which would guide the artistic digital restoration.
5. High resolution renderings were provided to the scholarly advisors who would direct the digital restoration process. Renderings

22. Digital Painting Original Caligula without color One of the goals of the project was to attempt to interpret how the sculpture may have been painted, and apply color in the virtual space. Scholars instructed us to use the Copenhagen Caligula example as an initial reference. Copenhagen Caligula painted reference model
