Genocide occurs in 8 predictable stages: 1. Classification divides people into "us and them" based on ethnicity, race, religion or nationality. 2. Symbolization assigns symbols like names or dress to the classified groups. 3. Dehumanization treats members of the targeted group as less than human. 4. Organization uses militias and special army units to carry out the genocide in a coordinated way.

We touch upon concepts proposed by such eminent figures & researches as- Mark Levene (concept of Nation), T.H. Marshall (Citizenship), Nira Davis Yuval (Global Citizenship), Anderson (Nation), Linda Woolf & Michael Hulsizer (Psychosocial model) along with others. Passing references are made of major genocides- Khmer Rouge, Holocaust, Hutu-Tutsi (Rwanda), and the genocide of Hindus by Pakistan military in Bangladesh, to understand various points raised in the presentation. This presentation investigates how notion of “race” is socially constructed. It arose concurrently with the advent of European exploration as a justification and rationale for conquest and domination of the globe beginning in the 15th century of the Common Era. Therefore, “race” is an historical, “scientific,” and biological myth. It is an idea. Geneticists tell us that there is often more variability within a given so-called “race” than between “races,” and that there are no essential genetic markers linked specifically to “race.”
