  2. CPA: What that means is Dungarvin is certified to place children for foster care or adoption. We will talk in more detail about what a developmental disability is later in the presentation.
  3. Foster care literally means “the placement of a child into the legal custody or legal authority of a county department of human/social services for physical placement of a child in a certified or licensed facility.” http://changealifeforever.org/foster.asp“Foster care means 24-hour substitute care for children placed away from their parents or guardians and for whom the State agency has placement and care responsibility.” http://www.dhs.state.mn.us/main/groups/county_access/documents/pub/dhs_id_027331.pdfOPPLA (Other Planned Permanent Living Arrangement)
  4. Children in foster homes: The Old TESTAMENTrefers to caring for dependent children as a duty under law. Early Christian church records indicate orphaned children lived with widows who were paid by the church. English Poor Laws in the 1500s allowed the placement of poor children into indentured service until they became adults. http://www.enotes.com/everyday-law-encyclopedia/foster-careCharles Loring Brace was working in NYC when he observed numerous immigrant children living on the streets. He presented families in the South and West with the prospect of helping these children by providing them with a home.
  5. It is not required that a person has been a parent before to qualify to be a foster parent. Many people become foster parents, regardless of previous parenting. A placement refers to the time when the child is “placed” in a certified home. Parents will not be left alone; Dungarvin provides a strong support system through visits, education and staff support. Dungarvin does not require that a family be traditional; all types of families are welcome. Dungarvin recognizes many legitimate family arrangements. Dungarvin does not discriminate because of marital status, gender, race, income, religion, age or sexual orientation. Violent, or agressive. Many foster children come from difficult backgrounds yet their resilience is astonishing. Foster children are fun-loving, happy kids. You do not have to be perfect to be the perfect parent. You can change a life forever. You do not have to be a saint to be a foster parent or have a perfect background. Dungarvin considers individual strengths and weaknesses regarding the ability to care for and role model for a child.
  6. Not all children served by Dungarvin have developmental disabilities yet foster parents have the option to further their education through programs focused on specific needs of the children. Some trainings include behavior management, recognition of abuse, and first aid/CPR.
  7. Break down 1st point… Normally, children are not diagnosed with illness until over the age of 18 because they are still developing, brain’s changing and growing. A disorder that hinders/effects their development and occurs while they are still developing = a developmental disability… hence the name. It is very important to remember that DD can be classified as mild, moderate, profound or severe. For example, one child might have a slight learning disability yet otherwise function normally while another might have a more severe learning disability and will require more assistance in a specialized learning classroom. What will this mean in regards to your placement? We will match you with a child whose physical, mental and behavioral conditions you feel comfortable and will be able to handle.
  8. 1. A disability does not exclude a person from being unique; everyone has strengths and areas for improvement. 2. They are not productive members of society. They cannot have friends or a family of their own. They cannot hold a job or learn a new trade. They do not obey the law and always cause trouble. 3. They cannot feel happiness, sadness, fear or anger. 4. They are scary because of violent, aggressive, disobedient and troublesome behaviors. 5. Like the flu, disabilities can be passed on.
  9. We take pride in the quality of services we offer; it separates us from other organizations.
  10. Foster Parent Core:This marks the start of your professional development as a foster parent.
  11. **“Once a child is found, Dungarvin will introduce you to the child before they are placed in your home.”** “Dungarvin will assist you with getting to know the child before they are placed.”Supports from Dungarvin and additional education on disabilities. We will match you with a child whose physical, mental and behavioral conditions you feel comfortable and will be able to handle. Long-term placements: We will not be placing children in your home and then suddenly pulling them out for no reason. At the same time, if the match is not right we will not force you to have that child in your home. Dungarvin does not typically do emergency placements; rapport will be established before placement.
  12. General program orientation is a free course offered by Dungarvin where potential foster parents learn about Dungarvin’s mission/philosophy, procedures, expectations and regulations. You can change a life forever. Become a foster and/or an adoptive parent for Colorado's children.
