4. What is the Korean war?
The Korean war is when North Korea invaded South Korea.
The U.S aided South Korea.
China and the Soviet Union helped North Korea.
Another name for the war is the South Korea is 6.25 war.
In North Korea another name would be Fatherland Liberation
War.

There were two different political governments in Korea.
The North held their own elections.
The elections and the dividing of Korea.
6. How is started?
The war start June 25, 1950- July 27, 1953
North Korean leader, Kim II Sung, wanted to unite
Korea by force.
The U.S and the Soviet Union differences prevented
the North and South to negotiate a unification treaty.
7. What was the overview?
The Truman Doctrine stated that the USA would
help people fight against Communism. In 1950 the
USA showed that this was more than words: US
troops went war to stop the spread of Communism
in Korea.

The Japanese controlled Korea between 1904 to 1945.
Russian forces were in the north of Korea and American troops
had landed in the south.
Korea become divided in two at the 38th parallel.
In 1948 the Korean Government were separate NORTH and
SOUTH.

11. Kim II Sung
• Leader of the North (Communist).
• Wanted to unite Korea by force.
• Insisted on the war
• Though that a peaceful reunification was
impossible.
• Sent his Military across the 38th parallel on
June 25,1950.
• Attacked with many WWII Russian tanks.
• Forced were stalled around Taegu and
Pusan. The stalling in known as Pusan
perimeter.

• Lead South Korea.
• Wanted to unite Korea.
• Forces were no match to the North.
• He was a corrupt leader
• Anti-Communism
• Become very unpopular.
• He was voted in favor of unification
with the communist state of the North.

MacArthur
• Commander of the U.S forces in the
Pacific.
• Wanted to cross the 38th parallel.
• Was fired by president Truman for
insubordination because he wanted to
bomb bases in China.

• Tried to prevent war and then
later agreed and started preparing
the soldiers for war.
• Gave the Chinese some air cover
for crossing the bridge over the
Yalu River.
• Died in March 1953.

• Ordered American air and naval
units into action by June 27, 1950.
• Responded to the invasion by giving
support to the French in Vietnam.
• Agreed to the UN forces moving into
North Korea, but though doing this
would bring Soviet Union of China
into war.
• Was criticized for making a lot of
mistakes such as sending troops to
Korea without the approval of
congress.
• Fired General Douglas MacArthur for
insubordinate.

On 25th June 1950 North Korea invaded the South in a bid to
troops
Re-unite Korea by force.
The invasion come at a time when many Americans were extremely
worried about the challenge of communism.
Truman ordered US forces in japan, led by General Mac Arthur. To
help South Korea.
Soldiers from number of countries fought in the Korea. Including
Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
The bulk of the UN forces were provided by the USA.

In early October the Chinese issued a statement that said”
China will not sit back with folded hands and let the
Americans come to the border.”
The Americans ignored the warning and continued to march
North.
10 October the Chinese government said that Chinese troops
would attack the Americans if MacArthur continued.
MacArthur ignored this treat.

attacked South Korean and American troops.
Truman and MacArthur were not out off by the Chinese.
MacArthur planned a further push towards the Chinese
border. But the planned was a mistake.
Chinese took control of almost all North Korea.
Communist forces arise again.
The Chinese offensive continued into the New year 1 January
they crossed the 38th parallel and on the 4th January they took
the Southern Capital Seoul.
21. MacArthur’s Advice:

The US should consider all methods to defeat the Chinese; this
could include the use of atomic bombs against China.
The war should be extended to the Chinese mainland in order
to cut off supplies to the communist forces in Korea.
The ultimate aim of the war should be not only the re-captured
of North Korea, but also the defeat of Communism in China
22. The fall of MacArthur
In February 1951 the American launched a further attack on the
Communist troops.
The communist forces had been pushed back to the original
border, 38th parallel.
MacArthur disagreed with Truman.
Truman abandoned the idea of conquering all of Korean and
was making peace with the Chinese.
25 march, MacArthur made a public statement criticizing the
idea of a deal with the Chinese.
Truman was vexed when he heard that MacArthur wanted to
cross the border again in order to re-conquer North Korea.
April MacArthur was dismissed. This caused a sensation in the
USA.

24. The stalemate
By the early summer 1951 the two sides in the Korean war had
reached a stalemate.( A position counting as a draw, in which a
player is not in check but cannot move except into check.)
The Chinese lunched a huge push south in April and May it was not
successful.
The loss of life in two months over 200,000 men were killed.
Peace talk began in July 1951 but there was no agreed cease-fire.
The situation become similar to the western Front in the first world
war. With both sides dug in to strong defensive positions.
1951-1952 situation still going on,45,000 Americans troops were
killed or wounded.

Approximately 10 million people were killed during the war.
North Korea lose.
The population went up in both North and South Korea.
South Korea has become one of the world’s economic success
stories.
