Designing Dublin 2.0 Love the City Spirit Summary
Jim Fitzpatrick Dublin Ireland Pre-2001 Jim Fitzpatrick captured the iconic Bolivian guerilla Che Guevara in this image during 1968. There are those who claim he made Che more famous than he ever would have been. It became the iconic image of the anti-vietnam war protests worldwide. While this image has been used extensively, jim has never recieved any fees for it's use. In terms of the spirit of dublin he has captured the images of Phil Lynott and sinead O'Connor in his unique style adding value to the creative side of dublin city. Lifesaver USA? 2010 LIFESAVER bottle uses a highly advanced ultra filtration system, originally developed for industrial applications. LIFESAVER bottle will remove bacteria, viruses, cysts, parasites, fungi and all other microbiological waterborne pathogens. It does all this without the aid of any foul tasting chemicals like iodine or chlorine. Whilst inventing LIFESAVER bottle I also invented FAILSAFE technology. In simple terms this means that when the cartridge has expired it shuts off, preventing the user from drinking contaminated water. Just change the cartridge and continue to use. LIFESAVER bottle has been designed to help save lives supplying people with clean pathogen-free drinking water. Treated with care and respect you can expect many years of trouble-free use. 10/15/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Bench in a Fence Johannesburg, South Africa 2006 Cascoland is a design project recently carried out in Johannesburg South Africa with the aim to encourage communities to become actively involved in shaping their public spaces. One of the interesting projects to come out of the the process is a work by Bert Kramer and Jair Straschnow who designed a series of benches and chairs to soften the border between the inside and outside of a security fence. The two designers - working on the inside of the fence - observed how local workers on the outside had nowhere to sit, thus having to lean towards the fence or sit on the ground. Jair and Bert did not have a permission to put up anything in public space, so instead they came up with the idea of building sittable objects into the fence. The objects are simply pulled out when needed and pushed back in after usage.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Search for Outlaw Playgrounds Sao Paolo, Brazil 2007 A research project and workshop on the reuse of residual urban spaces in central São Paulo, Lixurbana documented favourite street soccer sites, DIY playgrounds, and hangout spots that had been “constructed” under overpasses and in vacant lots. The data is presented as a Wikimap website, allowing outsiders to interact with the informal community that uses the spaces.
09/14/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City Pingpong Table Amsterdam, NL 2001 The Table Tennis Fence subverts the fence as a dividing element. A built-in ping pong table can be opened for neighbours to play with each other, transforming the fence into a meeting place. Share Fence is a related project with cut-outs in the shape of gardening tools like trowels and a watering can. Neighbours can hang tools to be shared in fence holes where they are accessible from both sides.
Imelda May Dubliner Imelda May, born in Dublin and raised in the Liberties, may be an unknown name to some, but to many she is already a superstar. She is unmistakable both in her music (a fusion of surf guitars, blues and rockabilly that wouldn’t be out of place in a David Lynch film) and her style, with a solitary curl and shock of blonde in her jet black hair. In Ireland, her debut album ‘Love Tattoo’, which she recorded and released on her own label, has gone Triple Platinum. She has shared a stage with U2, Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Van Morrison, Scissor Sisters, Lionel Richie and, most recently, the first lady of rockabilly, Wanda Jackson. And now, with the release of her new album “Mayhem”, she is about to go stellar. 10/15/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
Pyjama Girls Film Pyjama Girls principally focuses on the lives of two charismatic inner-city Dublin teens, Lauren and Tara, as they roam the streets, sporting nightwear for daywear –a curious cultural (and purely female) phenomenon currently spreading the globe. In a series of intimate vignettes, we gain a vivid insight into their daily lives: the girls’ tenacity amidst the at times grim uncertainty that surrounds them and the oft-quotable bravado that rolls with it. Director Maya Derrington’s emphatic feature debut is the latest in a series of inspired home-grown feature documentaries, amongst them His & Hers and Colony, exploring an eclectic array of contemporary subjects. (Perhaps we’re entering a new golden age in Irish documentary filmmaking.) Crisply edited by Paul Rowley and featuring a delicious minimalist electronic score from Dennis McNulty, Derrington’s triumph is to craft a keenly observed tour-de-force that, in the grand tradition of all great non-fiction cinema, challenges our way of seeing. 10/15/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

Neighbourhood shares, The Netherlands, The Hague 2009 By: The International Institute for the Urban Environment (IIUE), NV Woningbeheer and the department of Nature an Environmental Education of the City of The Hague Inhabitants improve living conditions in their village environment Solution Residents have taken over responsibility from the local authority for certain maintenance tasks for their neighbourhood. A residents’ association decides, with the local authority, what work needs doing, then organises it among local residents. Although the local authority pays for the work, responsibility is devolved to the residents’ association. The local authority and environmental organisations give the residents practical advice, and environmental awareness. 10/15/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
Spirit of America New York 2010 Want to own a piece of New York City history? Evelyn Beatrice Longman (1874-1854) designed this 1916 statue of "Electricity," or "Spirit of Communication" (nicknamed "Golden Boy"). It stood at 195 Broadway, but was moved in the 1980s to 550 Madison Avenue (then the brand-new "Chippendale" A.T.&T. Building, now the SONY building). Now Golden Boy is in New Jersey! 10/15/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
Gruel Dublin, Ireland Gruel restaurant is unique, and has been an institution in Dublin for the last 9 years, serving fresh food that is both nutritious and delicious. The restaurant offers friendly and informal service combined with excellent value for money. For an early morning giant bacon sandwich to the very popular roast in a roll or a hearty soup for lunch through to a full supper menu Gruel cooks what you want, when you want it. Quick, relaxed and delicious. 10/15/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
Chester Beatty Roof Garden Dublin, Ireland The garden of the Chester Beatty Library is divided into a series of different surfaces: stone, hardwood, gravel and ornamental grasses. These lead from the door of the garden to a high point where a large silver birch becomes the focal point. The timber trellises around the garden's perimeter heighten the feeling of enclosure and reduce the sense of exposure we normally associate with a rooftop. They also provide a frame on which the climbing plants grow. When the garden has matured, the climbing plants will eventually provide a lush green wall enveloping the garden and giving the space of a soft edge. Windows break through the trellis in places to allow views of Dublin Castle and the city skyline. The south side of the garden is planted with scented herbs, trees and shrubs. In atmosphere and character, the garden is calm. It was designed as a contemporary Irish garden using natural and indigenous materials in a straightforward and refined manner. 10/15/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City

The Shrinking Horizon Tallaght 2010 Mike O’Toole’s interest lies in using photography to make comment about the shrinking horizons of childhood. In this series children are the subjects of his voyeuristic observations or willing participants in some kind of performance. Part social commentary, part fiction, part autobiography, O’Toole’s work plays with the underlying tension and the culture of fear that surrounds childhood This concept could be used to bring communities together sharig photographs from the past. It could reflect the memeroies of old and young alike. Families could put together collections from there own dynestys. This may also include video, film as well as stills, relecting the differant ages and technologies 10/15/10 Designing Dublin 2.0 - Love the City
