Monsanto built a geospatial platform on Hadoop and HBase capable of managing over 120 billion polygons. As a result of the extreme data volumes and compute complexities we were forced to migrate our data processing from a more traditional RDBMS to a scale out Hadoop implementation. Data processing that took over 30 days on 8% of the data now runs in under 12 hours on the entire data set. Very little concrete material exist for how you process spatial data via MapReduce or model it in HBase. We will provide concrete and novel examples for processing and storing spatial data on Hadoop and HBase. As part of the data processing pipeline we integrated the popular open source geospatial processing library GDAL with MapReduce to convert all geospatial datasets to a common format and projection. We developed a method for splitting and processing images via MapReduce in which the boundaries of splits needed to be shared by multiple tasks due to the nature of the computation being performed on the data. Bulk writes to HBase were performed by writing HFiles directly. Finally we developed a novel method for storing geospatial data in HBase that met the needs of our access pattern.

Ever wondered how geospatial data works? Why don’t you come along and learn it where you’ll be presented to a fully functioning geospatial application that uses metadata from images to pinpoint them to a map. You’ll be introduced to a NoSQL tool and you’ll learn the basics of NoSQL technologies in a fun and initiative way. Along the way you’ll experience geospatial data, full stack application development using JavaScript and a little bit on semantic data as well. You will experience how easy it is to manage hybrid data (JSON documents, JPEG images as well as RDF triples) in one database, how to query geospatial data and how to work with JavaScript across a three tiered application.

Remember the last time you tried to write a MapReduce job (obviously something non trivial than a word count)? It sure did the work, but has lot of pain points from getting an idea to implement it in terms of map reduce. Did you wonder how life will be much simple if you had to code like doing collection operations and hence being transparent* to its distributed nature? Did you want/hope for more performant/low latency jobs? Well, seems like you are in luck. In this talk, we will be covering a different way to do MapReduce kind of operations without being just limited to map and reduce, yes, we will be talking about Apache Spark. We will compare and contrast Spark programming model with Map Reduce. We will see where it shines, and why to use it, how to use it. We’ll be covering aspects like testability, maintainability, conciseness of the code, and some features like iterative processing, optional in-memory caching and others. We will see how Spark, being just a cluster computing engine, abstracts the underlying distributed storage, and cluster management aspects, giving us a uniform interface to consume/process/query the data. We will explore the basic abstraction of RDD which gives us so many awesome features making Apache Spark a very good choice for your big data applications. We will see this through some non trivial code examples. Session at the IndicThreads.com Confence held in Pune, India on 27-28 Feb 2015 http://www.indicthreads.com http://pune15.indicthreads.com

John Park, Offering Manager, for IBM Cloud Data Services covers the touchstones for tomorrow’s information systems: data and integration. Stovepipe applications are no longer acceptable, and siloed data sources must evolve and open up to the full enterprise. All this in an environment where more is expected faster, and at a lower cost. If your GIS doesn’t watch out, it will be replaced by less capable alternatives that “fit better” into mainstream IT. But dashDB, a cloud-native offspring of DB2, can provide a bridge that keeps both sides happy. This session introduce this popular cloud data warehousing solution and illustrate how it works in concert with ArcGIS. You will learn about the built-in geospatial functions in dashDB and how you can easily use them to build applications rapidly. You’ll see an application that uses weather data and mobile application data to calculate insurance risk, detect potential fraud, and prevent damage.

Collecting, Distributing and Analyzing field data is a crucial part in any geospatial study. Field data collection tools and methods have been developed significantly due to the advancement of technologies such as Global Navigational Satellite Systems (GNSS) and development of smartphones. Accurate field data collection is also a necessary task for broad spatial data analysis and proper decision making. Development of Web technologies led to share the data and information effectively. This study tries to develop a framework based on the Geospatial Semantic Web technologies for disseminating and processing field data. Experimental results from an implemented prototype show that the proposed framework allows to visualize and process the field data in any context. The system of this study is capable of distributing and processing field data using web application. Moreover, the study demonstrates the importance and the capabilities of web services for spatial data gathering and processing. The system has been developed based on Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) packages such as ZOO-Project, Open Data Kit, etc. It enables user to further improve or deploy the system for variety of studies.

The Geographic Information System (GIS), industry is booming, especially with the continued reliance on online maps and the rise of location-aware mobile devices. GIS tech can be one of the key players in the mobile internet, big data, and the internet of things, and is an essential tool for the next generation of the global IT industry. Yet, the GIS community is not prepared. With all the data available, GIS experts lack an off-the-shelf solutions to manage the growing volume of spatial data. Relational spatial databases (RSDB) were the leader in this field for decades, but RSDBs have failed to innovate to handle massive volumes of data coming in at high velocity. Fortunately, MongoDB a useful tool for this challenge, but needs some tooling to create a connector to the GIS tech ecosystem. In order to bridge the gap, we built a pipeline to comply with the architecture of the Geospatial Data Abstraction Library (GDAL), so that MongoDB can work with most of popular GIS tools such as OpenLayers, Mapserver, GeoServer, QGIS, ArcGIS and others with ease. In this talk, I'll go through this pipeline tool and showcase some examples of how you can use this in your next application.

NOSQL are often limited in the type of queries that they can support due to the distributed nature of the data. In this session we would learn patterns on how we can overcome this limitation and combine multiple query semantics with NoSQL based engines. We will demonstrate specifically a combination of key/value, SQL like, Document model and Graph based queries as well as more advanced topic such as handling partial update and query through projection. We will also demonstrate how we can create a mash-up between those API's i.e. write fast through Key/Value API and execute complex queries on that same data through SQL query.

The Colombian Geological Survey (SGC, for its acronym in Spanish) developed a web application for searching public information of surface manifestations of hydrothermal systems, particularly hot springs and fumaroles. This application was developed as a means to provide information to the general public, national industry users and researchers in the areas of geothermal exploration, tectonics, geochemistry of hydrothermal fluids, geochemical monitoring of volcanic activity and microbiology. Additionally, the application aims to encourage interaction and discussion of researchers on geochemistry of volcanic and hydrothermal fluids to strengthen this research line in the SGC. The information of the surface manifestations, made available through this application, includes general data on geographical and geological location, in situ physicochemical features, images (pictures and videos), availability of spa infrastructure, pathways, as well as chemical and isotopic composition of the liquid and gas phases. The main functions of the application include information display, variables selection, and reports generation downloaded as pdf files, for general, geological and geochemical queries. The geochemical module includes the option to plot the most common diagrams for gas and water geochemical interpretation (relative triangular composition diagrams, Stiff, Schoeller, Piper and X-Y charts, including time series). This will be updated periodically, with expanded coverage analysis in liquid and gas phases. The loaded information includes individual records for 300 hot springs (and 11 fumaroles) located mainly in the Andean, Caribbean and Pacific regions, most of them related with volcanoes. For some of these, historical records are taken from the information review. The great diversity of chemical composition in these hot springs is expressed in their physicochemical characteristics: highest temperature above 90 °C, pH between 1.2 and 9.7, and highest electrical conductivity above 50,000 uS/cm.

Tracing the root cause of a performance issue requires a lot of patience, experience, and focus. It’s so hard that we sometimes attempt to guess by trying out tentative fixes, but that usually results in frustration, messy code, and a considerable waste of time and money. This talk explains how to correctly zoom in on a performance bottleneck using three levels of profiling: distributed tracing, metrics, and method profiling. After we learn to read the JVM profiler output as a flame graph, we explore a series of bottlenecks typical for backend systems, like connection/thread pool starvation, invisible aspects, blocking code, hot CPU methods, lock contention, and Virtual Thread pinning, and we learn to trace them even if they occur in library code you are not familiar with. Attend this talk and prepare for the performance issues that will eventually hit any successful system. When you’re building (micro)services, you have lots of framework options. Spring Boot is no doubt a popular choice. But there’s more! Take Quarkus, a framework that’s considered the rising star for Kubernetes-native Java. It always depends on what's best for your situation, but how to choose the best solution if you're comparing 2 frameworks? Both Spring Boot and Quarkus have their positives and negatives. Let us compare the two by live coding a couple of common use cases in Spring Boot and Quarkus. After this talk, you’ll be ready to get started with Quarkus yourself, and know when to select Quarkus or Spring Boot.

Explore how multimodal embeddings work with Milvus. We will see how you can explore a popular multimodal model - CLIP - on a popular dataset - CIFAR 10. You use CLIP to create the embeddings of the input data, Milvus to store the embeddings of the multimodal data (sometimes termed “multimodal embeddings”), and we will then explore the embeddings.
