1. 9/9/11LEQ: Why is the inside of the Earth divided into layers? (Reminder: Complete Sentences!!) 1. What is the science class big goal? 2. Why will achieving our big goal help you to live the life you choose for yourself? 3. What is one thing you are going to do to make a 3 or 4 on the science EOG this year? 4. Make a list (bullets are fine) of everything you know about the word “Density.” If you don’t know anything, take a guess at what you think it might be. (Reminder: sit silently after you finish!)
2. Today’s LEQ: Why is the inside of the Earth divided into layers? By the end of today, you should be able to… 1. Define Density. 2. Explain the difference between objects that are more dense and objects that are the least dense. 3. Identify objects that are more dense and less dense in comparison to each other.
6. Lab/Group Work Expectations Importance of reading ALL INSTRUCTIONS. Assign DIRECTION CAPTAIN. Assign partner numbers. All work goes in notebook Collaboration vs. Plagiarism Consequences for behavior that does not meet expectations.
12. HOW CAN WE REMEMBER THIS? Hotter, Denser, Most Pressure CORE Cooler, less dense, less pressure CRUST The crust is always LESS of everything!
13. GROUP PRACTICE Name That Layer! With your partner: write down which layer you think the clue is talking about Yes, you may use your notes! When I count to 3, hold up your answer We are shooting for 100% mastery
14. Who Am I? I am the outermost layer where life exists.
26. Summarizer: Complete sentences!! What is the difference between objects with HIGH density and objects with LOW density? Which layer of the earth is the most dense? How do you know? Which layer of the earth is the least dense? How do you know? Why is the earth separated into layers? Why do they not all just mix up together? *REMINDER—DO BEHAVIOR AND MASTERY!*

Give students class set of Lab reading, questions, and instructions (all one document)
Students use a page in their notebooks and fold it in half. The front of the page should be labeled “Layers of the earth” (this goes on the front of the page, with the fold facing to the right)
This goes on the front of the folded page, with the fold on the right
Students should open the page that they labeled and divide it into four equal sections
Teacher-point to different layers and cold-call students to make sure they can all name each one
