UNIVERSAL DESIGN: MORE THAN WHAT
MEETS THE EYE
DEBORAH SOVINEE
CURB CUT DESIGN - DEB’S STORY
WHAT WAS
OSTENSIBLY DESIGNED
FOR ONE PARTICULAR
GROUP IN THE
POPULATION WORKS
FOR EVERYONE.
UNIVERSAL
DESIGN:
DEFINITIONS
UNIVERSAL DESIGN MEANS
SIMPLY DESIGNING ALL
PRODUCTS, BUILDINGS,
SPACES, AND EDUCATIONAL
ELEMENTS TO BE USABLE
BYALL PEOPLE TO THE
GREATEST POSSIBLE EXTENT.
PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN

Use of the design is easy to understand,
regardless of the user’s experience, knowledge,
language skills, or current concentration level.
1a. Provide the same means of use for all users:
identical whenever possible; equivalent when not.
1b. Avoid segregating or stigmatizing any users.
1c. Make provisions for privacy, security, and safety
equally available to all users.
1d. Make the design appealing to all users.
Power doors with sensors at entrances that are
convenient for all users
Integrated, dispersed, and adaptable seating in
assembly areas such as sports arenas and theaters
Bettye Rose Connell, Mike Jones,
Ron Mace, Jim Mueller,
Abir Mullick, Elaine Ostroff,
Jon Sanford,
Ed Steinfeld, Molly Story,
and Gregg Vanderheiden.
GUIDELINES
The design is useful and marketable to people
with diverse abilities.
7a. Provide a clear line of sight to important elements
for any seated or standing user.
7b. Make reach to all components comfortable for any
seated or standing user.
7c. Accommodate variations in hand and grip size.
7d. Provide adequate space for the use of assistive
devices or personal assistance.
Controls on the front and clear floor space around
appliances, mailboxes, dumpsters, and other elements
Wide gates at subway stations that accommodate all users
GUIDELINES
Appropriate size and space is provided for approach,
reach, manipulation, and use regardless of user’s
body size, posture, or mobility.
4a. Use different modes (pictorial, verbal, tactile)
for redundant presentation of essential information.
4b. Maximize “legibility” of essential information.
4c. Differentiate elements in ways that can be
described (i.e., make it easy to give instructions
or directions).
4d. Provide compatibility with a variety of techniques
or devices used by people with sensory limitations.
Tactile, visual, and audible cues and instructions
on a thermostat
Redundant cueing (e.g., voice communications and
signage) in airports, train stations, and subway cars
GUIDELINES
The design communicates necessary information
effectively to the user, regardless of ambient
conditions or the user’s sensory abilities.
5a. Arrange elements to minimize hazards and errors:
most used elements, most accessible; hazardous
elements eliminated, isolated, or shielded.
5b. Provide warnings of hazards and errors.
5c. Provide fail safe features.
5d. Discourage unconscious action in tasks that
require vigilance.
A double-cut car key easily inserted into a recessed
keyhole in either of two ways
An “undo” feature in computer software that allows
the user to correct mistakes without penalty
GUIDELINES
The design minimizes hazards and the adverse
consequences of accidental or unintended actions.
2a. Provide choice in methods of use.
2b. Accommodate right-or left-handed access and use.
2c. Facilitate the user’s accuracy and precision.
2d. Provide adaptability to the user’s pace.
Scissors designed for right -or left-handed users
An automated teller machine (ATM) that has visual,
tactile, and audible feedback, a tapered card
opening, and a palm rest
GUIDELINES
The design accommodates a wide range of
individual preferences and abilities.
GUIDELINES
66a. Allow user to maintain a neutral body position.
6b. Use reasonable operating forces.
6c. Minimize repetitive actions.
6d. Minimize sustained physical effort.
Lever or loop handles on doors and faucets
Touch lamps operated without a switch
GUIDELINES

EQUITABLE USE PERCEPTIBLE INFORMATION
TOLERANCE FOR ERROR
FLEXIBILITY IN USE SIMPLE AND INTUITIVE USE
LOW PHYSICAL EFFORT
The design can be used efficiently and comfortably
and with a minimum of fatigue.
THE PRINCIPLES WERE COMPILED BY ADVOCATES
OF UNIVERSAL DESIGN, IN ALPHABETICAL ORDER:
THE PRINCIPLES OF UNIVERSAL DESIGNVersion 2.0 (4/1/97)
The Principles of Universal Design are not intended to
constitute all criteria for good design, only universally
usable design. Certainly, other factors are important,
such as aesthetics, cost, safety, gender and cultural
appropriateness, and these aspects must also be
taken into consideration when designing.
NOTE:
3a. Eliminate unnecessary complexity.
3b. Be consistent with user expectations and intuition.
3c. Accommodate a wide range of literacy and
language skills.
3d. Arrange information consistent with its importance.
3e. Provide effective prompting and feedback
during and after task completion.

UNIVERSAL DESIGN IS MORE THAN WHEELCHAIR RAMPS, IT
INCLUDES USING ALL THE SENSES , AND MULTI-MODAL
LEARNING STYLES
UNIVERSAL DESIGN IN MUSEUMS:
HEAR, TOUCH, SMELL, TASTE, SEE
AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE IS ACCESSIBLE, TOUCHABLE, AND
THEREFORE BETTER FOR EVERYONE
WHAT TO CONSIDER
CAN YOU REACH IT?
CAN YOU FIND IT?
CAN YOU GET TO IT?
CAN YOU SEE IT? OR
HEAR IT?
IS IT SAFE?
WHO’S AN ACCESSIBILITY EXPERT?
BRAILLE - IT ONLY COMES IN ONE FONT SIZE, WHICH YOU’D
KNOW IF YOU WERE BLIND.
NEW ENGLAND LIFE ZONES
THE ADDITIONS TO THIS DIORAMA INCLUDE SMELL, TOUCH, AND SOUND
(MULTI-SENSORY AND MULTI-MODAL). VISITORS WITH WIDELY RANGING
ABILITIES, LEVELS OF INTEREST, SOPHISTICATION AND CULTURAL IDENTITIES
CAN ACCESS THE EXHIBIT’S MESSAGE AND HAVE FUN DOING IT.
MODEL USED TO DESCRIBE DEPTH
PROTOTYPE - STRING IS UNWOUND SO VISITOR, BLIND OR NOT,
CAN MEASURE. THE FINAL DESIGN WAS SPRING-LOADED AND
RETRACTABLE.
MAKING MODELS - DRAWING
ACTIVITY
HOW DO YOU
ENCOURAGE CROWDS
OF PEOPLE TO DRAW
WITHOUT:
USING PENCILS, PAPER,
AND SHARPENERS
MARKERS
CHALKBOARDS AND
ERASERS
CRAYONS
MAGNET BOARD

EXHIBIT AREAS INCLUDING TABLE TOPS, ENTRANCES AND ALL
INTERACTIVES WERE DESIGNED TO BE WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE
