for Europe
• BHL-Europe Project startet in 2009. Not funded to digitise, but a
best practice network building a solution with existing (state-of-the-
art) technologies and bring it onto the market.
• Improving the interoperability of European biodiversity digital
libraries.
• Facilitate the open access to taxonomic literature for a large number
of target users including the general public.
• Provide a multilingual access point for the search and retrieval of
biodiversity content through EUROPEANA and BHL.
• Develop operational strategies and processes for long-term
preservation and sustainability of the data.
• Facilitate and enable the initiation of scanning initiatives in European
countries.

Teaming up
• Create an index of bibliographic references based on the EDIT
partner’s taxonomic literature catalogues using mechanisms
developed jointly with the BHL-Europe Project.
• Linked to the index of references, provide information on subscribed
digital literature resources available at the partners. Link through to
these resources where access is permitted.
• Link freely available digital resources (e.g. BHL) to the index of
references.
• Make the search capabilities for the index of references accessible
as (i) a web service and (ii) within a web page (ViTaL web portal).
• Allow users of the index of references to nominate literature items
for digitisation.
