• Describe and understand storytelling as a
teaching, learning, and evangelizing tool
• Identify the elements of storytelling
• Demonstrate Internet Production tools in the
creation of a 30-second digital story
• Appeal to the diverse learning styles of
students by using Digital Storytelling as a
presentation media
• Design assignments for student-created
stories which requires students to research a
topic from a particular point of view

shared stories or narratives,
originally in pictures or
symbols drawn on cave
walls.

Stories often take on their
own life, and
it is the story we remember
not the actual event.

This is a way of keeping
memories alive that might
have faded.

The Center for Digital Storytelling (CDS) in Berkeley, California is known for
developing and disseminating the Seven Elements of Digital Storytelling, which are
often cited as a useful starting point as you begin working with digital stories.
1. Point of View
What is the main point of the story and what is the perspective of the author?
2. A Dramatic Question
A key question that keeps the viewer's attention and will be answered by the
end of the story.
1. Emotional Content
Serious issues that come alive in a personal and powerful way and connects
the audience to the story.
1. The Gift of Your Voice
A way to personalize the story to help the audience understand the context.
2. The Power of the Soundtrack
Music or other sounds that support and embellish the story.
3. Economy
Using just enough content to tell the story without overloading the viewer.
4. Pacing
The rhythm of the story and how slowly or quickly it progresses.

• 30 sec story (Minimum)
• Using ONLY text – images – music
• Beginners – Encouraged to use Animoto
• Advanced – Any video editing (includes Animoto)
software like: iMovie, Windows Live (Advanced
may use script audio) or any other video editing
tool.

Before you begin creating your script/storyboard,
go play with the tool:
• There are easy to use tools (e.g., Animoto,
30 Hands, iMovie, Toontastic, Pinnacle Studio,
iStopCamera, iStopMotion, Windows Live Movie
Maker and many others.)
• Understand what you can do with your tool
• Understand its strengths and limitations
• Create your script/storyboard understanding how
your tool works

Write your story

• For 30 seconds, determine if 3 or 5 second
timing.
• If 3 seconds, you’ll have 10 frames or if 5
seconds you’ll have 6 frames.
• If longer, estimate the length of time per frame
for the amount of time of your video. (Note: One
night as you watch TV, count the number of
seconds per frame, for various type programs)
• Talk it out with a friend or colleague = Feedback!
