is beginning to turn twelve. When
the kids in his community turn
twelve, they have to attend a big
ceremony in which their professions
will be announced. Now that Jonas
has been selected to be "The
Receiver", he gets a list of rules. The
Giver tells him that he isn't allowed
to discuss his "Receiver Training"
with anyone, he has to lie. When
Jonas realizes that no one in his
community has ever really felt any
emotions at all, he also discovers
that the process of "release" is really
nothing more than a deadly
injection. He is not pleased with
this new discovery.

away to a land outside the communities. It
has color, emotions, music , love, and joy,
but also violence and poverty. While Jonas

"released" the next morning. He has to
make a thrilling and fast-moving escape
taking the baby with him. While biking
away from the community with Gabriel,
they're basically starving to death until
they see a familiar hill. When he gets to
the top of the hill a sled is waiting for him.

emotion, see colors, and hear music. By
this time, he knows that he is "Elsewhere".

to make his move.

french. His teacher, Mr. Bueller,
