• The best method is a solid foundation. If the block and short
block assembly is done right, then bolt on power upgrades

• We needed an engineering software that different users
with a variety of abilities could use effectively.
• We needed to be able to grow with the software and
expand our capabilities as our needs evolved and / or
changed.

• We needed a software that allowed quick convenient
communication between engineer, CNC programmer,
drafter, and the shop floor.
• We are a small business and we didn’t want to use
competitive software packages that necessitated
translation between each product.

10. ERL’s Path Forward
• Before we purchased Siemens Software solutions we
had one drafter that did all of the modeling and
drafting.
• We started with CAD and simple CAM capability and
we were able to slowly increase our capabilities over
the past 3 years.
• Now we have 3 engineers that use NX for 3D
modeling, 2D drafting, simulation, and CAM.

11. ERL’s Path Forward
• We have our drafters using Solid Edge even more
effectively than AutoCAD for the shop.
• All of the engineers and drafters communicate
effectively and quickly with the Siemens software
solutions.
• It is cost effective using the right Siemens software
tool for the right people and processes.

• We spend zero time translating data between programs
• Our Drawings are updated with the push of 1 button.
• We continuously update ourCNC capability and update our
Siemens software to maintain our advantage.
• With Siemens Post Builder we are able to edit & create our
own post processors for each new CNC machine we buy.

Siemens Software Interoperability
• The associative embedding technology is already production
proven with many customers using combinations of NX and
Solid Edge.
• Each product contains exclusive technology to allow part,
assembly and attribute information to be passed between
them.
• Solid Edge parts can be used in NX assemblies, with
designers having the ability to update any of the parts from
the assembly level in NX.

Siemens Software Interoperability
• Attributes which have been defined in Solid Edge, can be
transferred to NX for use in machining, while NX parts can be
opened in Solid Edge for downstream operations such as
fixture design.
• Solid Edge powerful assembly design tools are used to build
components around the NX part – using unique systems
design capabilities to ensure accurate fit and function of the
welding fixture before any parts are manufactured.
• Associative embedding ensures that updates to the original
files will be recognized and acted upon in either system,
keeping collaborative projects in sync at all times.

• As a result, tooling work can be carried out in parallel with
product design and part notification for updates to all team
members.
• Both solid and sheet bodies can be utilized, even when a file
contains multiple solid bodies, and the NX designer can
define which geometry will be transferred to Solid Edge.
• For NX assemblies, Solid Edge will recreate the assembly
structure – occurrence names, colors, file names – even
when the original assembly files do not reside in the same
folder.

• The level of interoperability is such that Solid Edge
can find the NX part files related to a given assembly
and recreate an accurate view of the assembly.
• The NX files present in the Solid Edge assembly will
remain associative back to the NX application, and
can still be opened and worked on.
• If the original part is modified, Solid Edge will clearly
show that the geometry is out-of-date with respect to
the original, and the user can update as necessary.
• This can be either a manual or automatic process.
