ANZAC is a
name given to
members of the
Australia and
New Zealand
army.
The letters in
ANZAC stand
for “Australia,
New Zealand
Army Corp”.
4. WHERE IS ANZAC COVE?
• A small cove on the
Gallipoli Peninsula in
Turkey.
• Turkey is on the
other side of the
world from New
Zealand. It is in the
Middle East.
5. WHAT HAPPENED ON
APRIL 25 TH, 1915?
• The ANZACs landed at Gallipoli
Peninsula.
• The ANZAC’s landed at the wrong
beach. The beach had steep cliffs
where the Turkish soldiers were
hiding. Our troops
had no protection
from the gunfire as
they got off the
boats and were
drowned or shot.
6. WHY IS ANZAC
IMPORTANT TO KIWIS?
• Our soldiers are so brave to fight in a war so
we remember them. Most of them died to
protect our country.
• A lot of New Zealanders have relatives who
fought in WWI and WWII. We are sad they
died but we are proud that were brave
enough to fight.
7. HOW DO WE CELEBRATE ANZAC
DAY TODAY?
ANZAC day is a holiday
in New Zealand. We
have a day off school
on April 25th if it is not
on a weekend.
We can go to a Dawn service or an ANZAC
service. If our relatives were given medals
for their bravery, we can wear them to the
service. People place wreaths and poppies
on the war memorials.
8. WHAT DOES THE POPPY
REPRESENT?
• The people who died in World War I to
save our country.
• The fields in Anzac Cove flowered with
poppies after the war. They say that the
poppies are so red that it is the blood from
those who died.
• These days the poppies are a symbol to
remember people who died in wars all
over the world.
