Dissociative Identity Disorder
(DID), previously referred to as multiple
personality disorder (MPD), is a dissociative
disorder involving a disturbance of identity
in which two or more separate and distinct
personality states control the individual's
behavior at different times. When under the
control of one identity, the person is usually
unable to remember some of the events that
occurred while other personalities were in
control.
The different identities, referred to
as alters, may exhibit differences in
speech, mannerisms, attitudes, though
ts, and gender orientation. The alters
may even differ in "physical"
properties such as allergies, right-
or-left handedness, or the need for
eyeglass prescriptions.
A person with DID may have as few as
two alters, or as many as 100. The
average number is about 10. Often
alters are stable over
time, continuing to play specific
roles in the person's life for years.
Some alters may harbor aggressive
tendencies, directed toward
individuals in the person's
environment, or toward other alters
within the person.
Retrieving and dealing with memories of
trauma is important for the person with
DID, because this disorder is believed to be
caused by physical or sexual abuse in
childhood. Young children have a pronounced
ability to dissociate, and it is believed that
those who are abused may learn to use
dissociation as a defense. In effect, the child
slips into a state of mind in which it seems that
the abuse is not really occurring to him or
her, but to somebody else. In time, such a child
may begin to split off alter identities. Research
has shown that the average age for the initial
development of alters is 5.9 years
A. The presence of two or more
distinct identities or personality
states (each with its own
relatively enduring pattern of
perceiving, relating to, and
thinking about the environment
and self).
B. At least two of these identities
or personality states
recurrently take control of the
person's behavior.

C. Inability to recall important
personal information that is too
extensive to be explained by
ordinary forgetfulness.
D. The disturbance is not due to the
direct physiological effects of a
substance(e.g., blackouts or chaotic
behavior during Alcohol
Intoxication) or a general medical
condition (e.g., complex partial
seizures). Note: In children, the
symptoms are not attributable to
imaginary playmates or other
fantasy play.
Treatment for DID consists primarily of
psychotherapy with hypnosis. The therapist seeks to
make contact with as many alters as possible and to
understand their roles and functions in the patient's
life. In particular, the therapist seeks to form an
effective relationship with any personalities that
are responsible for violent or self-destructive
behavior, and to curb this behavior. The therapist
seeks to establish communication among the
personality states and to find ones that have
memories of traumatic events in the patient's past.
The goal of the therapist is to enable the patient to
achieve breakdown of the patient's separate
identities and their unification into a single identity.
Strangers from all different
walks of life are caught up in a
severe rainstorm, stuck at a
motel in desolate Nevada. Soon
they realize they may be at the
motel for another reason when
one by one, people start getting
killed off. As tensions flare and
fingers are pointed, they have to
get to the bottom of why
they're there. Meanwhile in an
undisclosed location, a
psychiatrist is trying to prove
the innocence of a man accused
of murder in an eleventh hour
trial.
In the opening scene we hear the recorded
conversations between a psychologist and his
patient. Symptoms of D.I.D. become apparent.
In this scene Dr. Malick explains D.I.D.
The alters realize they all have the same
birthday, bodies disappear without a trace, and Mr.
Malick informs Ed of the alters. This clip displays
              many symptoms of D.I.D.
This clip shows more symptoms of D.I.D. as well as the
transition from reality to what is going on in the
patient’s mind, and the integration of personalities.

Dissociative Identity Disorder

  • 1.
  • 2. Dissociative Identity Disorder (DID), previously referred to as multiple personality disorder (MPD), is a dissociative disorder involving a disturbance of identity in which two or more separate and distinct personality states control the individual's behavior at different times. When under the control of one identity, the person is usually unable to remember some of the events that occurred while other personalities were in control.
  • 3. The different identities, referred to as alters, may exhibit differences in speech, mannerisms, attitudes, though ts, and gender orientation. The alters may even differ in "physical" properties such as allergies, right- or-left handedness, or the need for eyeglass prescriptions.
  • 4. A person with DID may have as few as two alters, or as many as 100. The average number is about 10. Often alters are stable over time, continuing to play specific roles in the person's life for years. Some alters may harbor aggressive tendencies, directed toward individuals in the person's environment, or toward other alters within the person.
  • 5. Retrieving and dealing with memories of trauma is important for the person with DID, because this disorder is believed to be caused by physical or sexual abuse in childhood. Young children have a pronounced ability to dissociate, and it is believed that those who are abused may learn to use dissociation as a defense. In effect, the child slips into a state of mind in which it seems that the abuse is not really occurring to him or her, but to somebody else. In time, such a child may begin to split off alter identities. Research has shown that the average age for the initial development of alters is 5.9 years
  • 6. A. The presence of two or more distinct identities or personality states (each with its own relatively enduring pattern of perceiving, relating to, and thinking about the environment and self).
  • 7. B. At least two of these identities or personality states recurrently take control of the person's behavior. C. Inability to recall important personal information that is too extensive to be explained by ordinary forgetfulness.
  • 8. D. The disturbance is not due to the direct physiological effects of a substance(e.g., blackouts or chaotic behavior during Alcohol Intoxication) or a general medical condition (e.g., complex partial seizures). Note: In children, the symptoms are not attributable to imaginary playmates or other fantasy play.
  • 9. Treatment for DID consists primarily of psychotherapy with hypnosis. The therapist seeks to make contact with as many alters as possible and to understand their roles and functions in the patient's life. In particular, the therapist seeks to form an effective relationship with any personalities that are responsible for violent or self-destructive behavior, and to curb this behavior. The therapist seeks to establish communication among the personality states and to find ones that have memories of traumatic events in the patient's past. The goal of the therapist is to enable the patient to achieve breakdown of the patient's separate identities and their unification into a single identity.
  • 10. Strangers from all different walks of life are caught up in a severe rainstorm, stuck at a motel in desolate Nevada. Soon they realize they may be at the motel for another reason when one by one, people start getting killed off. As tensions flare and fingers are pointed, they have to get to the bottom of why they're there. Meanwhile in an undisclosed location, a psychiatrist is trying to prove the innocence of a man accused of murder in an eleventh hour trial.
  • 11. In the opening scene we hear the recorded conversations between a psychologist and his patient. Symptoms of D.I.D. become apparent.
  • 12. In this scene Dr. Malick explains D.I.D.
  • 13. The alters realize they all have the same birthday, bodies disappear without a trace, and Mr. Malick informs Ed of the alters. This clip displays many symptoms of D.I.D.
  • 14. This clip shows more symptoms of D.I.D. as well as the transition from reality to what is going on in the patient’s mind, and the integration of personalities.
