- The purpose of this presentation is to show some tips and tricks to using LinkedIn and some other Web 2.0 ideas that I have for building your people networks. I‘ve made this presentation to a few groups recently to help them in getting started in this world that is more and more connected.
- Changes are that you‘ve heard of Facebook, but this is not the best place to build your own personal social network.LinkedIn and Xing are two professional social networks that are well known in Germany. - Most of Xing users are from the DACH area. This can be very good for dealing with German only contacts. For this reason only you might decide that you wish to only use Xing.Figures from:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XINGhttps://www.xing.com/
- LinkedIn is WAY larger than Xing by membership. It is 2nd to only Facebook in membership. For this reason I put more effort into it than Xing. - Here is what LinkedIn looks like for me when I log in. On the left, LinkedIn suggests some articles that they think that I might be interested in.Below the articles are status updates from my contacts, much like other social networks do.On the right hand are suggestions of people that you might know.Also on the right are some statistics on who has viewed your profile and how often you have shown up in searches. You can click to find out more information on who has viewed your profile, some limited information will be there with a basic membership, but to get more detailed information you‘ll need to have some kind of premium membership.
- The menu at the top includes: Home, Profile, Contacts, Groups, Jobs, Inbox, Companies, News, and More. You‘ll also notice the search bar. I#m going to show you my profile, so I go to Profile and then click on View Profile.
- This is my profile. Here you‘ll see current position, past positions, and education. I‘d suggest that you provide a picture. This makes you seem more like a person and people can recognize you easier.
- In Skills & Experience, people can endorse you for the different skills that you have listed. This is a relatively new feature in LinkedIn.
- Here are some of my connections. LinkedIn referes to the people that you‘re connected to as contacts, other social networks sometimes refer to them as friends, followers, and other terms. Many of my contacts are people that I have directly worked with. It is a good idea to look at the contacts of people that you connect with, you‘d be surprised by how many people they know that you know or knew. These are then all people that you might want to connect with further to extend your network.
- Next, I‘d like to show you groups in LinkedIn. Many social networks have groups. These can be a good place to get in contact with colleagues in your field or with people that share similar interests to yourself. This is also a good place to build your network. I‘m going to show you some of the groups that I below to.
- Here are some of the groups that I belong to. When you conect with contacts or are looking at other people‘s profiles, I‘d suggest checking out the groups that they belong to as these are goups that you might consider joining.
- There are 4 Toastmaster groups that I belong to as well as 2 associated with the university that I went to. I‘ll mention Toastmasters further in this presentation. I recommend looking for groups tied to the schools you went to as well as other volunteer organizations that you belong to. These can be another good source for building your network.
- This is one of the Toastmaster goups that I belong to. There are two basic types of groups in LinedIn, one is open, while the other requires that someone approve you joining it. With most of the groups people can ask questions or have discussions. This is a good place to help others, show your expertise, and is a good place to meet other people who could possible provide further contacts for you.
- I have clicked on the membership tab. This group has 30,000+ members. Members are usually sorted by those that your connected to (this is a 1st level connection), then it goes to 2nd level, and so on. There are also Promotions, Jobs, Search, and More… tabs within each group.
- When you find people that you want to add to your network, you should click on the blue connect button.
- After clicking on connect, you‘ll see something like this. You‘ll need to click on how you know the contact. You select Colleague, Classmate, We‘ve done business together, Friend, Groups, Other, and I don‘t know (so and so). Here is where the groups can come in handy, you can connect with someone that you haven‘t physically met (think about all of the virtual teams we‘re working in today, so there are lots of people that we haven‘t physically met). You should also write a note for people that might not be that familar with you. This is not a requirement but you‘re more likely to be able to connect with people this way. With all of the people we know all around the world, it is helpful to have a context about how you know someone.
- I can‘t recommend SlideShare enough. There are millions of persentations at the site and lots of things that you can learn. SlideShare shows what persentations are being linked shared in Facebook, Twitter, and so on. http://www.slideshare.net/

- Here are some of the presentations that I have shared. 3 presentations that I have uploaded have more than 4000 views. When you give a presentation, you should think about sharing it on SlideShare. This can help establish your credibility on a subject or you can share information that you find interesting with others. I often try to make a presenation out of speeches that I give at Toastmasters as this allows people to view the presentation that weren‘t there and allows other to search on keywords tied to the presentation. - Clubs and organizations are a good way of developing management and leadership ability that you might not have had the chance to do at work. They‘re also another area where you can show accomplishment on your cv/resume.
- You can show your experticise and build credibility or share interesting information that you‘ve learned.You can learn all kinds of things and presentations can give you and idea of how some subject works in a short period of time.I try to create a presentation to go along with my speeches at Toastmasters, even if I don‘t use it when I give the speech.You can link to all of your online profiles and anything else that you want people to find at About.me
- Remember that nobody likes a spammer, so don‘t let people think that you are one!
