3. If you’ve been following along through these
lessons, you’ll probably notice a recurring theme
throughout the course; getting back links.
You can consider the web a huge group of
candidates (websites) trying to get into public
office (the search engines) as many times as
possible.
4. The search engines choose which of these
candidates it will include in a particular search
based on 100’s of parameters. We’ve
discussed several of those parameters in the
previous lessons.
One of the most important criteria for
choosing which sites to show in a search
is that site’s “popularity”.
5. Popularity is judged on many factors as well,
including the number of daily visitors who visit
your site, the amount of time they spend on
your site, the number of pages they view on
your site and the number of incoming links to
your site from other popular websites.
Another thing that search engines look
for is new content added to your site.
6. This is where a lot of companies fail at SEO.
They might fix up their on-page SEO using all
the lessons I’ve given you, then they do
nothing to the site for weeks, months or
years. So you might rank really well after
doing these initial SEO changes, but if you’re
not adding content and incoming links, you will
start to lose popularity with the search engines.
7. Hence, the reason why you should have a blog
on your business website!
Even if you only post on your blog 300-400
words once per week, you’ll get visited by the
search engines more frequently AND you can
place 1-2 links in your blog post back to your
business website.
8. So you’re doing both things that the
search engines love; building links and
adding new content.
Blogging does not need to be an arduous
task. In fact you might already have old
newsletters, or press releases or marketing
content which can be rewritten in an
informational format and used for your first 4-5
blog posts.
9. You can also outsource the creation of the
posts, but that is another lesson!
