The plants will be collected, documented for nomenclature and identification, dried and preserved in a press. Arts and graphics of the plant specimens we collect will be made for documentation. Designs of the display for the specimen in the herbarium along with the construction of the display will be made. To help with documenting and logging the specimens we collect and the info we find out about them, a computer web log and a website will be put up on the internet. Background Information An herbarium is defined by most as a collection of plans preserved and dried for the use of botanists and taxonomists. It is also defined as an institution that houses a collection of plants for the view of the public interested in learning about the various species of plants. The herbarium is used in educational cases for teaching classes on botany, taxonomy, forestry, agriculture, ethno botany and dendrology. The herbarium is also used by botanists and scientists to identify species and to discover if it is new to the world of science. It is also used by scientists to document where they grew, the anatomy of the plant, and what insects were collected with it. The first one was started back in the late 1500’s by an Italian count named Lucas Ghini. Design Brief Construct an herbarium press and a capsule any extra material from a specimen that cannot fit in the original press. Real Life Problem Situation The real life problem that concerns the use of herbaria involve the loss of plant diversity. With the progressive industrialization of the world and the expansion of architecture and the increasing deforestation going on in the world, the habitat for many flora organisms. Because of this, along with diseases and the animals that consume them have led some plants to go one the verge of extinct. Stakeholders General public, students and universities, botanists, scientists, etc. Limitations The limitations of this Senior Capstone Design Challenge would range from factor like space, resources, etc. The limitations of this design challenge would depend on how much space there is for this herbarium or how space is permitted for it. Another limitation of this design challenge is how much resources are there for the construction and maintenance of the herbarium. Added on to this would be funds. The maintenance of this herbarium would depend on how much is invested into this venture. One more limitation of the Senior Capstone Design Challenge would be the size and thickness of the specimen. Scientists organizing an herbarium Dried and pressed plant specimens read to be placed in a frame for an herbarium A student in this photo views one of the dried and pressed plants from an herbarium Students work to prepare web logs and websites for logging and documenting plant specimens hey have collected
