Background information After the Russo-Japanese war ended Japan took over Korea After WWII, Korea which was a Japanese colony was taken over by the US and USSR Korea was divided at the 38th parallel North: USSR, communist South: US, capitalist
START OF KOREAN WAR leader: Kim II-Sung Stalin agreed to let North invade South June 25, 1950 North invaded South Goals: Korea united under communist Tried to capture S Korea capital, Seoul
Counter attack of South Korea UN recommended to sent troops to South Korea 15 countries sent troops to Korea under General Douglas MacArthur (US), fought against Japan during WWII  Drove North Korea back to border  Then to China border South Korea Leader: Syngman Rhee “In Korea the Government forces, which were armed to prevent border raids and to preserve internal security, were attacked by invading forces from North Korea.  The Security Council of the United Nations called upon the invading troops to cease hostilities and to withdraw to the 38th parallel.”-statement by President Truman (US)
China Saw as a threat China supports North Korea Push South Korea and UN troops back to 38th parallel Continued fighting, stayed at the same place MacArthur got fired
Agreement Stop war 2 occurrences that led to agreement: Eisenhower became US president, and death of Stalin Eisenhower made ceasefire with North Korea and China-July 25, 1953
Results 3 years of war June 25, 1950 - 27 July 1953 North and South Korea is divided at nearly the same place, 38th parallel DMZ demilitarized zone, guarded by US and N Korea troops Casualties: 2.5 million
TODAY There is still conflict between the 2 countries Often, shots were fired against each other  Recently: North Korea bombed South Korea’s submarine Caused more tension !!!
Conclusion North Korea- communist (USSR) South Korea- capitalist (USA) North attacked South  Korean war US troops in S Korea pushes N to China China pushes N Korea + US troops back to 38th parallel Agreement brought end to war but the conflict between the 2 countries still remains unresolved until today. June 25, 1950 - 27 July 1953
