3. Letter from the President
Gentlemen –I wanted to take a moment and share with you my thoughts on Central Standard competing at
International. First off wow, a chorus that was started just a few years ago has arrived on the “big” stage. This is
an opportunity for us to introduce ourselves to the barbershop world. It’s an opportunity to show that it
doesn’t matter how many guys you have, 30 guys can produce a huge sound and perform at an “A” level. All of
that stuff aside it is going to be a great week of brotherhood for us as a chorus but also as with other members
of the society.
I hope you are prepared for a great week. Please take some time to enjoy Philadelphia, there are tons of
historic landmarks within walking distance of our hotel. Take some time to sing a tag in the hotel lobby and
make new friends. We have worked hard in the past few months and have grown as a chorus, this is our
opportunity to show the greater barbershop community what CS is all about. This is going to be a great week
for the chapter.

4. Directors Thoughts
Gentlemen –
Well here we are…about to head to Philadelphia as the Central States District champion chorus. Wow! Can
you believe it’s almost time? It’s certainly been a fun ride since Lincoln, hasn’t it?
The convention experience will be special for all of us, for many different reasons. It may be your first trip to
the eastern part of the U.S. Or, it may be the thrill of attending your first society international convention. For
some, it will be the first time you ever compete at international. But for all of us, it will be the first time Central
Standard performs on the international stage. And YOU get to be part of that experience – that history. It’s
unlikely that the exact same group of guys will come together for a performance like this one again. And there
won’t be another “first time” like this one for Central Standard. We’ll get to make a bit of history. How
awesome is that?
After all the preparations, hard work, planning and sweat that have led up to Philly, our time on stage will come
and then be part of the past. So, savor the international experience together – the trip out, the rehearsals with
each other, the CSD pep rally, meeting other barbershoppers from around the world, taking in the contests, the
AIC show, seeing other choruses and quartets, singing tags, making new friends near and far, and most of all,
having FUN! Much like Harmony U, the international convention will be one of the highlights of your
barbershop life. So whether it’s your first international, or one of many, remember, it’s your first time with
Central Standard.

5. Directors Thoughts
In addition to your own personal goals for the contest, keep this one in mind – when the curtain opens, YOU
have the power to take people to a different place - to entertain them, to make them laugh, smile, cry, or
maybe put their arm around the one they love. It’s a chance to make a difference in someone’s life for a few
minutes, to take them somewhere else, and maybe even inspire them in a way they didn’t think possible. There
are few times in life where we get the chance to do that AND wrap it up in the gift of music…pure,
unaccompanied, made from nothing but our voices and from the heart. That is one of the greatest gifts you
can share.
And after Philly, our ride continues – this contest isn’t our “destination.” It’s just one stop on our journey
together. I hope you have a wonderful, fantastic convention. It’s been a pleasure to stand out front. I’ll have
the best seat in the house on Friday, July 2, because it will be with each of you.
Thank you for the gift you have given me. My wish has already come true.
Love you guys –
Mike

11. First time in Philly?
Experience all that Philadelphia has to offer. Hit the cobblestone streets and awaken your inner explorer in the
city that embraces past and progress. Treat your senses to bustling open-air markets and art that inspires in the
city's eclectic galleries. Watch history come to life and soak up some of the country’s most celebrated culinary
creations and phenomenal nightlife. Here are seven Philadelphia first-timer must-sees:
1. Trolley Tour
Hop on a burgundy and green Victorian-style open-air trolley and make memories while you hear the full
Philadelphia story from an expert guide. The trolley gives you unlimited, 24-hour, hop-on, hop-off access to 20
major attractions, including the Betsy Ross House, Reading Terminal, LOVE Park, the Rodin Museum, and
Society Hill. Tours depart throughout the day from the northeast corner of Fifth and Market streets.
2. Liberty Bell
Take a photo with an American icon and an international symbol of freedom. On display at its new home – the
Liberty Bell Center in Independence National Historical Park -- the 2,000-pound Liberty Bell is a free attraction
housed in a glass building overlooking Independence Hall. Learn the facts, myths, and the history behind the
crack and get an X-ray view of the bell’s inner-workings.
3. Philadelphia Museum of Art
Follow in Sylvester Stallone's footsteps and run skyward on the famed stairway featured in the film "Rocky" and
its numerous hard-hitting sequels. Step inside the Philadelphia Museum of Art’s Greek-style building and get
inspired by more than 225,000 brilliant works of art.
4. Cheesesteak Challenge
Wrap your taste buds around a cheese-whiz-dripping cheesesteak sandwich. A Philadelphia favorite since 1930, the famed
comfort food consists of thinly sliced steak, and your choice of melted cheese, and grilled onions on a long Italian roll. Locals
debate which institution offers the best — Pat's or Geno's. Both are open 24/7 and located across the street from each other.
Head to Passyunk Avenue in the heart of South Philly to decide for yourself.

12. First time in Philly?
5. Reading Terminal Market
This lively bazaar at 12th and Arch streets maintains its 1893 roots as the largest public market under one roof. Reading Terminal
Market's variety will astonish visitors with Amish baked goods, free-range meats, fresh produce, ethnic spices, handmade jewelry,
and pottery.
6. National Constitution Center
See freedom firsthand and take a virtual tour with the late Peter Jennings at the first and only museum in the nation dedicated to
telling the story of the U.S. Constitution – the National Constitution Center. Located at Independence Mall and offering more
than 100 interactive exhibits, this groundbreaking museum lets you take the Presidential Oath of Office and fill a seat on the
Supreme Court.
7. The Franklin Institute and the Academy of Natural Sciences
These two attractions house scientific innovation and are among the oldest museums in Philadelphia. Explore the life and death
of a star or pinpoint distant galaxies at The Franklin Institute's Fels Planetarium, the nation's second oldest. Located on 20th
Street, the museum's traveling and permanent exhibits offer in-depth looks at everything from mummy forensics to Ben Franklin's
lightning rod.
Next, walk to the Academy of Natural Sciences on 19th Street and experience a tropical garden filled with butterflies from around
the world. Connect with nature with sensory-pleasing visits to the watershed exhibit, Dinosaur Hall, and the Live Animal
Center.

Philadelphia Contest to be Last Competition for Vocal Majority Director Jim Clancy
Written by Administrator Wednesday, 19 May 2010 07:16 Dallas, TX (May 18, 2010) --- After nearly forty years
and an unprecedented eleven gold medals in international competition, Director Jim Clancy has decided to
make the 2010 Philadelphia performance his last international contest at the helm of the Vocal Majority
Chorus®. He will continue as Musical Director and primary arranger, but will leave preparation and execution
for future contests to Jeff Oxley and the rest of his music staff.

Indianapolis and is now preparing for competition in Philadelphia. When asked about the upcoming contest,

the Vocal Majority Chorus® is singing better than ever, and I am honored to lead the men into competition one
last time before our wonderful family of barbershoppers.”
