Healthcare By: Courtney Watson
Overview of Presentation PowerPoint presentation Application Class activity Conclusion/ Questions
Relevance of Topic If you didn’t already know, healthcare is one of the most controversial issues going on in America today. There is a common debate going on daily about what to do with the American Healthcare system. There is no doubt about it that better healthcare is a necessity and something needs to be done to improve the situation. Everyone needs health care. Basically, if healthcare is improved and the bill is passed, in my opinion it will make plenty of individuals with out health benefits happier and stress free.
Personal Relevance Healthcare in the United states has in my opinion, taken a turn for the worse. I feel as though by taking the time to look into this, it will help you, as well as me, understand what exactly is going on, and also what should be done.
Thesis Healthcare is the United States is one of the most talked about issues in the media today. There are many aspects of healthcare that people don’t know and these aspects should be addressed.
What is healthcare? Healthcare-Broadly defined and includes any care, service, or supply related to the mental or physical health of an individual. http://wordnetweb.princeton.edu/perl/webwn?s=health
Who is eligible? Healthcare is a human right. Therefore, you can not be denied healthcare benefits. Everyone is eligible.

General information Most people get health insurance through their jobs or are covered through a family member's insurance. When this takes place it is called group insurance. Group insurance is generally the least expensive kind. In many cases, the individual’s employer pays part or all of the cost. Some organizations offer only one health insurance plan and others offer a choice of plans. http://www.bls.gov/oco/cg/cgs035.htm

Organizations Preferred provider organizations (PPO) Similar to HMO Pay a fixed monthly fee (premium) primary care physician is not required If you need or want health care from outside the network, you should expect to pay a higher co-payment or co-insurance than if the provider were from within the PPO network http://www.salary.com/personal/layoutscripts/psnl_articles.asp?tab=psn&cat=cat011&ser=ser031&part=par094
Why aren’t people covered? If everyone is eligible for healthcare benefits, then why are so many people not covered? COST!!!! “ I just don’t have the money” http://www.flickr.com/photos/27631166@N04/2966942158/ (Torr)
So why NOT have Insurance? http://facts.kff.org/upload/jpg/enlarge/5_Reasons_for_not_Having_Health_Insurance.jpg
What played a role in the loss of Insurance? cost lost job or a change in employment Medicaid benefits stopped ineligibility for family insurance coverage due to age or leaving school
How cost of insurance impacts others. “My paycheck after taxes is $350 to $400 every two weeks. For health insurance, they would deduct $60 from each paycheck. I would be left with $290, which is not a lot to deal with. If I could afford the insurance, I would take the children to the doctor more often. Lucky for me, they are healthy children.” –Rita J. Carrillo (Torr)
IS THERE STILL ?
Can you keep your insurance if you lose your job? State and federal regulations protect you from losing your health coverage in the event you lose your job. Unfortunately, they offer little protection from high premium costs. However, jobless workers may get help paying for these premiums as part of the economic stimulus bill. http://money.cnn.com/magazines/moneymag/money101/lesson16/index.htm

What’s available for the jobless? COBRA Insurance-Continuation of benefits under a previous employer's plan after an employee is terminated from his/her previous employer. Provides continuity of full care, but not necessarily affordable health insurance. Available 30 days after the date of termination Only covered for one year Pay comes out of pocket from the individual http://www.cobrainsurance.com/COBRA_Law.htm http://farm1.static.flickr.com/95/272829684_b371845117.jpg
What does COBRA insurance cover? Inpatient and outpatient hospital care Physician care Surgery and other major medical benefits Prescription drugs Dental care Vision care Life insurance is NOT covered under COBRA http://www.essortment.com/all/cobrainsurance_rgpl.htm http://planetgreen.discovery.com/home-garden/images/2008-10/prescription-drugs.jpg
Scenario “ When you walk in to the doctor’s office, the first thing they say is: “How will you pay? What insurance do you have?” - Mildred Davis “ I have to go to the bank before I go to the doctor.” - Mildred Davis In January 2006, Mildred Davis, who was 48 years old at the time, received an emergency Hysterectomy after several weeks of uterine bleeding. She received a hospital bill for $8,000 and a doctor bill for $2,000. (Torr)

Opting for pay over insurance Nationwide, about half of all uninsured workers are either self-employed or working in businesses that have fewer than twenty-five employees. When certain coverage is available in these companies, the employees are then required to pay a large share of the cost. “It’s one or the other, a pay raise or health insurance.” – Sal Z. Valiani (Torr) http://kingston21.files.wordpress.com/2009/04/confusion-new.jpg
Universal Health Care What is it? The belief that all citizens should have access to affordable, high-quality medical care. http://topnews.co.uk/24692-uhs-agrees-purchase-psychiatric-solutions
Structure of Universal Health Care Universal health care programs require some form of government involvement through: legislation mandates regulation The laws passed determine what type of care must be provided as well as to whom
Children’s Health Care “ Children are one third of our population and all of our future.” -Select Panel for the Promotion of Child Health,1981 http://www.fcs.uga.edu/ext/ccqm/resources/index/index_img.jpg
Benefits for Children Can make a lasting difference in a child’s life Provides both physical and developmental benefits Improved school performance Long-term savings in health care costs
Did you know…. Check-ups, shots, and regular dental care are needed to help keep children healthy? Children with health insurance are more likely to be healthy than children without health insurance? Children with health insurance miss less days from school? Healthy children do better in school? Children without health insurance are less likely to be treated for ear infections which can lead to lifelong hearing loss? Children with asthma who receive basic medical care experience far less asthma-related attacks and emergency room visits?
Facts vs. Myths Myth: The U.S. has the best health care system in the world. Fact: The U.S. has among the worst health statistics of all rich nations. The U.S. ranks near the bottom of list of international comparisons. Part of the problem is that there is more profit in a cure than in the prevention of an illness. Another part of the problem is that America has the highest level of poverty and income inequality among all rich nations. Therefore, poverty affects a person’s health much more than the other problems. The U.S. does not have the best health care system in the world. It has the best emergency care system in the world http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/L-healthcare.htm
What can be done? The following can be done to improve health care coverage in America: Reach out to families without health insurance and let them know about programs that will work in their advantage Support universal health care coverage. Contact your representatives in government and let them know that you support the continued funding and expansion of health care coverage for all in America.
Who’s covered? Percent of population covered by public health care: France, Austria 99% Switzerland, Spain, Belgium 98% Germany 92% Netherlands 77% United States 40% http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/L-healthcare.htm
Life expectancy Men Countries Women Japan 76.2 82.5 72.9 81.3 France 74.1 81.3 Switzerland Netherlands 73.7 80.5 Sweden 74.2 80.4 Canada 73.4 80.3 Norway 73.1 79.7 United States 71.6 78.6 72.2 77.9 Denmark http://www.huppi.com/kangaroo/L-healthcare.htm
Ask yourself this….. If you needed heart surgery, would you prefer to have the surgery done in China, Japan, France, or the United States? Keep in mind that a Countries health care system may extend the life of a percentage of a population.
The people’s word…. Percent of people who believe their health care system needs fundamental change: United States 60% Sweden 58% United Kingdom 52% Japan 47% Netherlands 46% France 42% Canada 38% (Torr)
The future… If America wants to start its road to improvement, it must not only pass universal health care, but reduce poverty as well. http://www.flickr.com/photos/seiuhealthcare775nw/3584425251/ http://www.healthcareproblems.org/
Something to think about…. Did you know that depending on where you live, your social economic status, race, or gender, the quality of medical treatment you receive can vary dramatically? http://www.healthpaconline.net/health-care-statistics-in-the-united-states.htm
Jobs Health care is among today’s fastest-growing and most exciting industries. Between 2004-2014, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, more new jobs-about 3.6 million- will be created in health care than in any other industry. (Marmor)
Democrats Openly advocate price control, which expands health benefits among everyone “ Here we are at peak economic performance, and we are being told that we cannot provide health coverage for everyone. If not now, when?” – Senator Paul Wellstone (Minnesota) Introduced a bill that would give states large sums of federal money to help achieve the goal of universal insurance coverage (Torr)
Republicans Opposed to price control, which play a role ways to expand coverage among everyone. Want to create tax breaks to help people buy private insurance Want to create “Health Marts” which offer insurance to self employed people and businesses with fewer than 500 employees (Torr)
The Healthcare Bill Health reform will make health care more affordable, make health insurers more accountable, expand health coverage to all Americans, and make the health system sustainable, stabilizing family budgets, the Federal budget, and the economy. http://assets.nydailynews.com/img/2009/11/27/alg_health_care_bill.jpg
Advantages Affordable? How? Cutting down premium costs for tens of millions of families and small business owners who are priced out of coverage today (middle class). Helps 32 million Americans afford health care who do not get it today. Makes coverage more affordable for many more people Under the plan, 95% of Americans will be insured.
Advantages cont. The new healthcare bill sets up a new competitive health insurance market giving millions of Americans the same choices of insurance that members of Congress will have. http://files.motherinchief.com/uploaded_images/choices-760701.jpg
MORE ADVANTAGES! Keeps premiums down and prevents insurance industry abuses and denial of care. How does it do this? brings greater accountability to health care by laying out commonsense rules of healthcare so nothing goes misunderstood.
EVEN MORE ADVANTAGES!! The new healthcare bill will end discrimination against Americans with pre-existing conditions unlike before. http://www.torontorealtyblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/08/discrimination.jpg
Okay, this is the last advantage!!!!! Puts our budget and economy on a more stable path by: reducing the deficit by more than $100 billion over the next ten years Cut government overspending http://www.growyourbusinessnetwork.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/09/real-estate-overspending3.jpg

There is a common debate going on daily about what to do with the American Healthcare system. There is no doubt about it that better healthcare is a necessity and something needs to be done to improve the situation. Everyone needs health care. Hinweis der Redaktion

  1. A lot of people do not know what health care really is. Even though this topic is in the media almost everyday, many people are blind to the fact that healthcare applies to a person’s everyday life in order to live a healthy life. In every environment it is important to be healthy. For example, in the work place, it is important to be healthy enough to show up for work everyday. If a person were to get sick today or tomorrow and they have no health insurance, it may be impossible for that individual to show up to work the next day.
  2. This slide gives a general understanding on who is eligible for healthcare. Seeing as though people can not be denied healthcare, everyone is eligible and can receive treatment. This slide is informal to others because if you didn’t know if you could be covered, after reviewing this slide you will come to recognition that you can.
  3. This slide reflects on the general information about what healthcare is. This slide explains the topic of healthcare more in dept and gives me a foundation to talk about the upcoming slides about the different healthcare plans and types. Generally group insurance is cheaper but also a family plan is around the same price. A family plan is basically the same thing as group insurance in that if one member is insured, then their immediate family within that household can also use their coverage.
  4. This slide talks about one of the five plans and organizations. The amount you pay to visit the doctor solely depends on who are insured by. Filling out forms is possible but not always considered. All medical expenses and documentation is up to you.
  5. Managed care coverage is another type of plan. This specific plan is similar to the others. In this slide I am comparing MCC with the HMO, PPO, and POS coverage. MMC is similar because the coverage recommends certain providers that are up to your standard and what you can afford. If you were to receive treatment from any other network not covered by Managed care, then this coverage will not cover the expenses.
  6. POS plans has the same standards as the previous slide (MCC). This plan looks out for the best interest of the individual. They steer the individual towards a lower medical cost rather than a more expensive facility. The physician an individual would want to see has to be chosen from within the network that POS plans cover. Unlike the Indemnity, in this plan paperwork and medical records and service fees are completed for you.
  7. HMO is very common in the US. Each moth you will receive a bill that will then have to be paid. The individuals choose which physician they would like to see. After that, that physician is then responsible for everything. A co-payment is usually required before you see the doctor. Any care received outside of the network is not covered. This basically means that if a person were to go to a hospital which does not take HMO, they can still be seen but, they have to pay the full amount of that visit and any procedure that took place that day.
  8. Everyone excepts PPO’s. This is generally the best type of organization.
  9. Many people cannot afford health insurance which is why so many are left uncovered. Certain companies only offer certain types of insurance that cover different coverage's. For example, some only cover dental, vision, specialty care ect…. A lot of companies don’t pick up deductibles, which means the employer has to pay but so much into the insurance.
