2. It has been found that certain kinds of cancers are more
prevalent than others. Research at the time of this
writing indicates that about 100,000 people in the US are
diagnosed with colorectal cancer. Unfortunately the
cause of this type of cancer has not been determined.
The good news is that researchers have identified some
factors that can potentially increase your risk of getting
this type of cancer.
The main risk factor in getting colorectal cancer is age. As
an individual gets older, the risk of getting this type of
cancer is greater. Some research shows that with each
passing decade, your risk becomes greater. Other
research indicates that individuals over 50 are the ones
that are most likely to get this disease. However younger
individuals can get this disease as well, so they will need
to be aware of it as well.
3. Another risk factor is if there are polyps in an individual’s
colon or rectum. Polyps are benign. However one type in
particular, adenoma polyps, is considered a sign of
colocteral cancer. There are some doctors that will even
consider these the first stage of this cancer. However it
should also be noted that polyps, including adenomas,
are associated with age and do usually develop in
individuals over the age of 50.
Another risk factor is family history. If you have a history
of cancer in your family, then your risk factor does
increase. This risk factor goes up even more if your
parents or siblings have had the disease. Also if more
than one of you family members have had colorectal
cancer, your risk will be even higher. And your risk will
increase as well if family members have had or have
adenoma polyps.
4. Other disease of the colon and rectum can also increase
your risk of cancer. This is especially true when an
individual has one of the many chronic diseases
associated with this part of the body, such as Crohn's
disease and ulcerative colitis. Another risk factor is
women that have a history of breast, uterine and ovarian
cancer. Another medical condition that will increase your
risk factor is diabetes. Some research indicates that
individuals that have diabetes have a 30 to 40 percent
more likely to develop this condition.
The one risk factor you can control is your lifestyle. Poor
diet and lack of exercise can also increase your chances
of developing colorectal cancer. A diet rich in fatty foods
and poor in fiber can lead to gastrointestinal problems
and colorectal cancer. Some research also indicates that
smoking, drinking alcohol and a sedentary lifestyle can
also increase your risk as well
5. Since there is nothing you can do about most of these
risk factors. Every individual should follow their doctor’s
advice on getting regular colorectal cancer screenings.
Individuals with any of the factors that increase the risk
of colorectal cancer should definitely be aware of this
disease and ensure they get their screenings. Screenings
are the best possible preventative measure that an
individual can take at this time.
