Over time an organisation will have additional
hardware and software requirements.
An upgrade strategy determines how replacement
resources will be implemented.

3. Future proofing
It is important that any new hardware or software has
a useful life span, generally 3 to 5 years.
What have been the major changes in technology in the past 5 years?
What about the next five years?

4. Compatibility & Integration
Testing
Any upgrades need to be compatible with existing
hardware and software.
Need to test for compatibility between:
 Network servers
 Operating systems
 Software
 Peripherals
Need to carry out integration testing by ensuring
components are combined and tested with each other.

5. Legacy Systems
Legacy systems are those software or hardware
systems which are outdated, but are still required by
an organisation.
 Often old technologies such as mainframe computers
 May be too expensive to replace
 Solution may involve emulation
