the Importance of Pro Bono Aid
Since its establishment in 1947 , the Michigan State Bar Association
Foundation has distributed more than $172 million in grants to improve
access to legal aid, promote the highest standards in legal education, and
educate the public about their rights. Nonprofit civil legal aid programs
remain the single largest area of focus, receiving more than $7.2 million in
grants from the State Bar. These contributions have been instrumental in
helping those who are struggling financially, and according to the
Foundation's most recent estimates, more than 1 in 3 state citizens qualify
for legal aid. Through the support of the Foundation, legal aid programs
helped over 44,000 low-income individuals resolve their cases.
